She went off like a red-hot firecracker on his foyer floor, then vanished.

Esa never intended to participate in her best friend’s unorthodox dating scheme—flirting with hunky construction workers in Chicago traffic. Her thoughts changed when she saw a long, lean slice of heaven strutting around the side of the highway. For him, she would be the carefree sex kitten her borrowed car with its suggestive license plates implied she was.

Though smarting from the wounds of a recent breakup, Finn can’t resist the tempting redhead driving the come-and-get-me car, flashing him contemptuous looks with those brandy-colored eyes. The lure of taming the feisty little kitten is just too great to deny…

Our Love (or is it Sex) Affair with Cars by Beth Kery

My heroine in my new Cerridwen contemporary romance FLIRTING IN TRAFFIC falls victim to the charms of a very sexy man. But how much did her steamy love affair relate to the fact that she met the love of her life while driving a fast, furious Ferrari?

Americans have had a love affair with the car for a century now. Automobiles have come to represent affluence, independence…and yes, sex. Not just any kind of sex: wild, potent, youthful sex. The kind of sex you had at your fingertips when you were twenty years old and the world was laid out before you like an eternal strip of naked road.

Now don’t get me wrong. Just because I wrote a fun, flirty novel featuring a cherry red sports car doesn’t mean I’m a proponent of a flagrant waste of our earth’s resources. I actually drive a hybrid. But hey, it’s a romance novel. And yeah, writing about an uptight heroine who discovered her wild streak both behind the wheel of a Ferrari and in her lover’s bed was fun.

All we have to do to is turn on the television to know that cars are promoted as sex machines. I mean, have you seen any car commercials lately? Or gone to an auto show? Hmmm….I wonder how a skimpily clad blond relates to the hard, driving power of a motor? I’ll have to pull out my book of Freudian interpretations for that one.

If you think about it, many of us first experienced the excitement of independence and sex…where? Well in a car, of course. The six by seven foot compartment of a car might be the first place that many of us first experienced freedom from our parents, where we laughed and fantasized about the future with our good friends, where we flirted with the raptures of what it meant to be an adult. Some of the best memories of my youth take place in a car–laughing my butt off with my friends while we ‘shot a lap’ in my hometown, Saturday night date night…sneaking out in my parents’ Buick.

So maybe there’s good reason for our sexy love affair we have with automobiles. Do you have any fast, furious memories? For those of you who don’t live in the United States, what are your thoughts about America’s car craze?
