Although VISIONS OF MAGIC is the first book by Regan Hastings, it’s far from the author’s first book. Under another name, she has been nominated six times for the prestigious RITA award from the Romance Writers of America. Her romance novels have appeared many times on the USA TODAY bestsellers list.

About a year ago, the idea for my new Awakening series flashed into myhead. This isn’t an isolated event. In fact, I’ve written more than 100 books under another name. Ideas are plentiful, but I knew immediately that this one was special. It started, as the best ideas do, with a simple question: What if witches were real?

I wanted to root my new world in reality. VISIONS OF MAGIC takes place today, in a world that’s instantly recognizable to the reader, but with some imaginative twists. When Shea and her Eternal (Torin, an immortal warrior) travel, they don’t always have to rely on our traditional modes of transportation. Torin can travel by fire. He is, quite literally, the hottest hero I’ve ever written.

At its emotional core, the book is very much based in how we humans feel and react. It’s human nature to be leery of “the other,” ie, anyone who thinks or behaves differently than we do. That leeriness turns to full-fledged fear when our lives are threatened. Think of the Japanese internment camps of World War II. The bombing of Pearl Harbor was a cataclysmic event that made Americans feel vulnerable and helpless to do anything about it, which led to rage and overreaction. I could imagine the same thing happening if we learned that a few chosen people can call fire to their fingertips.

In the world of VISIONS OF MAGIC, witches are not only real, they’re dangerous. When their powers first awaken, the witches don’t know how to control them, and people are hurt. Killed. This is a dark and dangerous world. Malevolence is assumed, and soon the world is at war. Shea, newly discovered as a witch, must run for her life even as she wrestles for control of her powers so she can save ungrateful humanity.

It’s also very human to turn to each other in times of fear, and that’s just what Shea and Torin do. On the run, their emotions are heightened, and that makes for some sizzling love scenes between these destined mates. Poor Torin is very crabby after all the time he has waited for Shea’s powers to awaken.

Before I began writing the Awakening books, I spent quite a bit of time building this new world. Nora Roberts does an exceptional job of this with her J.D. Robb books. As does Lara Adrian with the Midnight Breed series. Genius. Moody and evocative, dripping with atmosphere. So I asked myself, if witches were real and a threat to Americans, how would our society react?

What do you think would happen if witches were real and a threat to the lives of innocent people? How would people in your town react? How would the government react? How would you react if you suspected your best friend was a witch?

I’m holding a contest for readers to guess my true identity for a chance to win a Federal Bureau of Witchcraft fleece jacket. Enter at www.reganhastings.com. The contest ends February 1, the release date of VISIONS OF MAGIC, so enter right away!

Love speaks volumes without a single word

Pacific Passion, Book Three

In the months they’ve traveled together, Laurin Marshall and Matt Jentry’s attraction has grown beyond spectacular sexual passion to into a deeper emotional connection. Still, Laurin wrestles with one last question: how a water shifter and an air shifter can possibly find permanent common ground.

Matt is content to wait patiently for Laurin to realize he has no desire to change her sky-borne nature. Until a giant golden eagle touches down on the Stormchild and tips the delicate balance of more than just the boat.

Laurin’s obvious affection for the newcomer comes as a shock. And so does the flash of jealousy that interferes with his shamanic ability to heal the man’s malady. While Matt struggles to balance his conflicted responsibilities, Laurin attempts to reconcile her undeniable feelings for one of her kind with her desire for Matt.

Somewhere between the ocean depths and the mountaintops, they need to find a love strong enough to call them both home to the Stormchild.

Warning: Familiar lovers (hot) with old rivals (hotter) and a wild curse-melting ménage (hottest yet). Get ready for one exotic paranormal that will make you look to the skies and sea with longing.

Now let’s have a look at all of them together…*happy sigh*

Once one of the “no-account Raines boys,” Gabriel Raines has pulled himself out of poverty by his bootstraps to become a successful businessman—one who has become the target of revenge…

You can’t fight what you can’t see. And Gabriel Raines can’t be sure just who’s setting the fires in his new real-estate development. When two fires hit back-to-back, he knows it’s personal, but any number of competitors or ex-employees could be the arsonist.

The police suspect Angel Ramirez, a local teen who’s been in trouble before. But Mattie Baker, a volunteer at the Family Abuse center, just can’t believe the kid she’s been working with would go back to his delinquent ways.

Determined to convince Gabe that she’s right, Mattie must get close to him and find out who’s putting their neighborhood in jeopardy. And just as the arsonist’s flames continue to burn, they find a heat developing between them. It might just turn into a full-fledged fire…if they can survive long enough.

When I come up with a story idea, one of the most import things and sometimes the hardest to do is to find the right romantic match for the hero or heroine who is the primary character in the book. Since AGAINST THE FIRE centers around Gabe Raines, an ex-marine, a tough, strong, hardworking guy (with a very high sex drive), I wanted a woman who was his equal. That meant she had to be tough, strong, hardworking and though she doesn’t realize it at first, a woman with a very passionate nature.

Mattie Baker is all of those things but she’s also a woman who finds it difficult to trust. Though she’s drawn to Gabe, she believes he is not suited to her in the least. She’s an architect, college graduate, a business woman. Gabe is a contractor, a guy who works with his hands.

And Mattie has trust issues. Her father died and left her and her mother impoverished. She doesn’t ever want to find herself dependent on a man.

But as the two are thrown together trying to find the arsonist who is burning down Gabe’s construction projects and putting people’s lives in danger, Mattie begins to see how much they have in common. They’re not so far apart as she believed.

And there is the sexuality that vibrates between them. It doesn’t take Gabe long to figure out that Mattie is too strong a woman for the men she has been dating. She needs a man who really IS a man, a guy who can bring out the passionate woman she is inside.

The trust issue is another problem. But Gabe is a trustworthy, dependable guy who is smart enough to realize that Mattie needs her own space, her own successes.

So matching them was fun and of course setting them off on a dangerous, desperate adventure added to the mix.

I hope you enjoy AGAINST THE FIRE and that you’ll watch for Dev Raines story in AGAINST THE LAW.

Till then, all best and happy reading. Kat

A few months back the fabulous and talented Nikki Duncan and I were chatting about writing, and we decided that wanted to do a project together.  Knowing we wanted a third author we asked the wonderful Mackenzie McKade to join us. Our collaborating has resulted in three delicious novellas, Wild, Wet and Wicked in Whispering Cove, three interrelated novellas that are available now at Amazon, BN and Smashword.

After we decided that we wanted to write our stories in a small fishing community I had to think about what kind of story I wanted to write.  One of my favourite story lines is reunited loves—I love the angst, the history between couples and how the hero and heroine must overcome some past tragedy to find their happily ever after.

Now that I knew my story line, I had to develop characters and decide on professions for each of them.  Well, I immediately knew I wanted to make my hero a small town firefighter.  Ah, yes, there is just something about those firefighters that get to me <wink>.  And what woman doesn’t have a sweet tooth for a man in uniform?  Next up was my heroine, who was she and what did she do for a living.

While I’m a horrible cook myself I’d been watching a lot of cooking shows on television, my favourites being Michael Smith from Prince Edward Island, Jamie Oliver and Rachel Ray, so I decided I wanted to make my heroine a chef.  When you read the book you’ll noticed that for the most part I shied away from talking about food, even though the heroine had returned home and was trying out new, gourmet recipes for her parents restaurants.

While I might have stayed away from talking about fancy food, I had no problem with the hero and heroine experimenting with melted chocolate to sweeten their reunion.  Ah, so sweet, so hot, so delicious…

Whispering Cove, Maine is bustling with the excitement of their first ten year high school reunion looming on the horizon. Even the town’s favorite grandfathers—Byron Mitchell, Harold Adair and Errol Wilson—are anticipating the return of the young ones. Specifically, their young ones.

The grandchildren who skipped town after graduation and have failed to settle down with a family are coming back for a prolonged visit. During their weekly poker game, Byron, Harold and Errol cook up a plan to keep their grandkids home, or at least see them settled into marriage before they leave. To make things interesting, they place a bet on which grandchild will be the first to the altar, after all they’re not going to be around forever and the sound of great grandkids sure would help shake things up a bit in the quaint, touristy fishing village.

When the kids arrive home, the matchmaking games and antics begin as these three men battle each other, and go to great lengths, to win their prideful bet.

Haunting memories made her run—family forced her return—can love make her stay?

A dark secret keeps her away from the sleepy seaport village, until she receives an ambiguous telephone from her grandfather. He’s in the hospital. Desperate to cling to her only living relative she races back home and straight into the arms of the one man she can’t bear to face.

Sheriff, Brody McGrath, built his life without the woman of his dreams, but when he catches Andie, thinking she’s a prowler, he isn’t prepared for the onslaught of emotions—grief, regret, heartache, and love.

There is no denying the old spark between them still burns brightly, but can love defeat the demons of Andie’s past and allow her to live again?

A summer hiatus goes from relaxing to sizzling with a look, a kiss, and a taste of melted chocolate.

Celebrity Chef Kathleen Wilson has returned to Whispering Cove for her high school reunion. Tired of big city life, she is looking forward to relaxing in the quaint fishing village, but the one thing she’s not looking forward to is facing the boy from her past. The boy she turned her back on ten years ago. The same boy she has never quite gotten over.

Firefighter Trent Parker has never given up on reuniting with his Katy, and when he hears she’s back in town, he believes a blatant seduction is just the thing to show her where she belongs. Sparks fly the second they see one another and when he accidentally soaks her with his fire hose it generates heat and need inside them both with only one way to extinguish those fiery flames.

Soon they are burning up the sheets but when morning comes and the smoke clears, one question remains. Will Katy leave for another ten years, or will she realize the fire they’ve ignited isn’t about to burn out?

Sometimes the best diagnosis calls for a visit home, an unexpected reunion, and a sexual adventure.

Danica Kent, MD has settled into her new role as a small town doctor. She caters to her Whispering Cove patients, especially the rum drinking, poker playing, town grandfathers who have their hands in a bit of everything. But when one of those patients brings her face-to-face with her high school crush the work she’s done to reinvent herself falters.

Braydon Mitchell lives his life sailing around the world to write freelance magazine articles. He has no desire to settle down with a family in a small town, so he’s successfully avoided his grandfather’s pleas…until now. Returning home out of worry for his grandfather’s health, Braydon finds more than old friends in town for their high school reunion. His grandfather’s sexy doctor.

With erotic sparks igniting at their first touch, Danica makes Braydon want everything he isn’t built for…small town stability, a strong woman’s love, family. Can they find a common ground in love?

No Pity

Each skeleton is flawless—gleaming white and perfectly preserved, a testament to his skill. Every scrap of flesh has been removed to reveal the glistening bone beneath. And the collection is growing…

No Compassion

When bleached human bones are identified as belonging to a former patient of Dr. James Dixon, Detective Malcolm Kier suspects the worst. Dixon was recently acquitted of attempted murder, thanks to defense attorney Angie Carlson. But as the body count rises, Kier is convinced that Angie is now the target of a brutal, brilliant psychopath.

No Escape

Angie is no stranger to the dark side of human nature. But nothing has prepared her for the decades-long legacy of madness and murder about to be revealed—or a killer ready to claim her as his ultimate trophy…

Who’d have thought an ex-con and a cop would be so perfect for each other? At first glance Angie Carlson and Malcolm Kier my hero and heroine in MERCILESS seem to be total opposites. She’s a defense attorney who successfully defended a ruthless killer and he is a homicide detective. How could they possible find happily ever after? Because under all the bravado, beat the hearts of two people who are quite similar.

I know this because when I’m building a character I often like to take the Myers-Briggs personality test on their behalf. I learned of this trick from writer Marless Melton who spoke at a Virginia Romance meeting a few years ago about Myers-Briggs and character building. I discovered that it’s fun to run down the questions and figure out how a character would respond.

When I took the test for Detective Malcolm Kier, my hero in MERCILESS, he scored out as an ESTJ (Extrovert, Sensing, Thinking and Judging). Without going into a long explanation, an ESTJ lands in the Guardian/Supervisor group. This means Garrison focuses on the outside world versus the inner self; he values facts above intuition; he uses logic before feeling; and he likes to be the one making the decision. He is a take-charge, live in the moment, clear vision of right and wrong kind of guy.

Angie Carlson, the heroine of MERCILESS is also a Guardian but she scores as a Nurturer. She is an ISFJ (Introverted, Sensing, Feeling and Judging). Like Kier she values facts and likes to be the decision maker (SJ) but she is more attuned to her inner self and values feelings over logic (IF).

Guardians like Angie and Malcolm are searching for a person to share their life with and are seeking a partner that will not only fill their romantic needs but also be a helpmate. ESTJ’s and ISFJ’s are considered to be two halves of the same whole.

So, you might be wondering where the sparks are going to be if Angie and Malcolm are so much alike? Believe me, being a defense attorney and a cop have had a real impact on them and shaped how they present themselves to the world.

Do you know your personality type? A quick Internet search will give you all kinds of sites loaded with tests and information on the Myers-Briggs personalities. It’s great fun!

Mary Burton captivates readers with stories of mystery, crime and relationships–destined to keep readers on the edge of their seats. Her February 2011 book MERCILESS is a romantic suspense set in Virginia. When she’s not writing her latest novel, she is most definitely in the kitchen cooking.

At the reading of her father’s will, Maria Slade receives shocking news – as a four-year-old, she’d witnessed her prostitute mother’s murder and been taken into hiding by the well-meaning preacher who’d raised her as his own.

Maria remembers none of that. But now she’s determined to flush her mother’s killer out of hiding and discover the identity of her birth father. She heads to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where she meets Detective Bodie Scott.

Empathizing with this beautiful woman looking to find out who she really is, he opens the decades-old case file. Their investigation leads them down a dangerous path, where no one is what they seem. Where a father does not want to be found. And a murderer has “like mother, like daughter” in mind for Maria.

Did you ever look at a member of your family and wonder how the two of you could possibly be related?  Did you ever entertain the fantasy that you might have been adopted?  It was those thoughts that helped me create my 2011 releases from MIRA Books.

Imagine three sisters, grieving for the loss of Andrew Slade, their only living parent – a man they loved dearly.  Imagine their shock to learn upon the reading of his will that not only was he not their birth father, but they weren’t really sisters.  As part of their legacies, he has left behind for each of them, a journal, and in that journal are all the facts he knows about their parents and their pasts.  As if that wasn’t enough shock and fear to add to their grief, the single reason their mothers gave them up to Andrew Slade was because their daughters lives were at stake.

I know it’s difficult enough for me to get up the energy to just go home for a family reunion.

Imagine going back to a place you can’t remember, to people who want you dead.

What would you fear most?  Would it be learning about the people from whom you came, or why they wanted you dead?

He let her go once. This time he’s playing for keeps.

Colters’ Legacy, Book 3

Callie Colter once chased sunsets all over the world. Until Max. Together they were a perfect storm of desire, and she reveled in the beautiful power. Then he disappeared without a word, and the betrayal drove her home to lick her wounds.

Who knew he’d have the gall to show his face in her brother’s bar.

Max Wilder figures he deserves Callie’s right hook to the jaw, but it changes nothing. He had his reasons for pursuing her across Europe, for making her fall in love with him. But when she took everything he gave and offered more, she changed all the rules. He had no choice leaving her, but he’s back. This time for the right reasons.

Callie is angry and hurt, yet powerless against Max’s relentless onslaught. He’ll settle for nothing less than her complete surrender—and her love. Only when she’s back in his arms will he be truly happy. And the damning truth can stay safely tucked away.

Except the truth has a way of creeping to the surface, and Max may just be out of second chances.

COLTERS’ WOMAN (book 1 of the Colters’ Legacy series) is the book started my love of erotic romance and it’s been the one that I compare other books in this genre to. Last year, COLTERS’ LADY came out and it made me fall even more in love with this family. Now we have reached the conclusion of this series.

Callie was my type of heroine from the beginning. She had already thrown a drunken college boy through the window of her brother’s bar and she doesn’t hesitate to “express” herself to Max when he shows up.

It took me a few chapters to warm up to Max. He wasn’t what I was expecting. I’ve become used to the strong, gentle, and caring men of the Colter clan and that’s not Max. He’s a little arrogant with some rough edges. But as I continued to read, I discovered that Max is hiding behind that arrogance. He realizes what he has lost and he is afraid that the secret he is hiding will cost him the most important thing is his life. I couldn’t help but root for the hero that is willing to lay it all on the line for love.

It makes me sad to say goodbye to my favorite fictional family but this was the way to do it.  A strong heroine, a sexy hero, smoking hot love scenes, tons on emotions (grab some tissues!), and an ending that left me sighing.
