Gina Santiago is a member of an elite tactical team in charge of protecting the world. She’s devoted her life to apprehending the most heinous criminals that prey on society—and now she’s after the worst one yet.
On her own, with no backup, the trail takes her to a dusty, tight-knit town on the fringes of society, where everyone’s a suspect. Even the sexy sheriff, Morgan Hunter, isn’t telling her everything. Gina knows he’s trouble, but she’s inexorably drawn to him.
The closer Gina comes to finding out the secret of this sleepy little town and its big bad sheriff; the closer she comes to catching the predator, the more scared she gets—because she’s beginning to realize that she has a secret too. A secret that will change Gina’s life… and make her the killer’s prey.
First off, I’d like to thank Fatin for having me here. 🙂
A lot of people ask me where I came up with the idea for RED. Most of my books have started with a single sentence, question or line that eventually snowball into full manuscripts. Sometimes I hear the characters saying the lines in my head. I know it sounds crazy, but it’s the truth. Sometimes the line itself plays in my mind until the rest of the story forms. That’s what happened with RED. One question kept rolling around and around in my head until I could no longer ignore it: What if Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf turned out to be the same person?
The question is provocative and certainly not something a lot of people would ask themselves while reading the fairytale. I’ve always loved Little Red Riding Hood, but hated how it ended. I didn’t like that the wolf was killed. It always seemed ‘wrong’ to me. It’s probably why I’ve been drawn to write about werewolves. Don’t get me wrong, I like vampires, but there’s something about wolves that draws my attention like a lodestone. That said, I should tell you that many creatures occupy my Dead World, including vampires.
The thing I decided when I first started to write RED was that all the creatures in my world would have a scientific basis for existence. What does that mean? It means my world isn’t magical. Vampires and werewolves aren’t creatures of myth. They are transgenic creations. (People who carry a foreign gene that has been inserted in their genome. The foreign gene is constructed using recombinant DNA.) These people volunteered to have their DNA manipulated in order to become super soldiers. RED takes place over a hundred years after the war has ended. The soldiers (Others), who were once heroes, are now in hiding because the organizations who created them want them destroyed. They don’t want proof of what they did during the war walking around.
The story follows Gina ‘RED’ Santiago as she investigates a murder. Murder is all but unheard of on the Dead World thanks to advanced DNA detection. In the course of the story, which loosely follows the Little Red Riding Hood fairytale, Red stumbles upon the Others and finds her life forever transformed.
RED is a dark fantasy thriller with a little science fiction tossed in for good measure. It’s also the first book in a trilogy. The love story starts in RED, continues through SCARLET (June 09), and wraps up in CRIMSON (Nov.09). Although different than the average paranormal romance, the Dead World series will not disappoint romance readers in the end.

******Leave a comment for the chance to win a copy of RED! Good Luck! 🙂
Sounds like an interesting book.
all the creatures in my world would have a scientific basis for existence
I had this book on my wishlist anyway, but this line just cemented it for me. Red sounds exactly like the kind of book I want to read. Mega-kudos to Jordan – genetic modification is more believable than magic, and the more realistic a sci-fi/fantasy is, the more likely I’ll like it 😉
Have a lovely day! 🙂
Hi Jordan,
RED sounds fantastic! I’d like to leave this world and visit your Dead World for a while. Gina comes off as a heroine who can kick butt. I love reading stories with heroines like that. I can’t wait to devour this trilogy. 🙂
Hi.
This book sounds very interesting. I’ll make a note to check it out. Love the cover as well.
Really interesting how the idea came to you as well. Is there any other character who stuck out in your mind while writing this story?
hugs,
WendyK
Hi Jordan. Good to see you here. RED sounds wonderful. 🙂
love the premise of this book. Very different and unusual. I was looking at this one and this interview has made me definitely want to read this one
Jordan, I’m sorry to say I’ve never read anything by you. However reading this little bit about RED I’m going to start looking for your books. RED sounds like a book I won’t be able to put down until I’m finished.
Jordan, Red sounds fascinating. I look forward to reading it!
Carol
Thanks for coming Jordan. Red sounds like a great book. Dead world sounds like an interesting new world.
Ooh! This book sounds great! I love that cover too!
Hi Jordan!

Good morning Jordan,
I was lucky enough to win a copy of signed copy of ‘Red’ in a prize bundle. I haven’t read it yet but it sits on the top shelf with a few other signed books in a place of honor. Now I’m gonna have to pull it down & read it. Great insight into the story.
Don’t enter me I just wanted to say Hi & Thank you!!!
Thank you,
Susan
Sounds like a great beginning to a new trilogy!
This looks really good! I can’t wait to read it!
Natasha A.
RED sounds right up my alley, and I’m really looking forward to reading it!
Oooh sounds interesting… never thought of Little Red Riding Hood and The Wolf being one… I think I will look for this one!!! 😀
Oh! This sounds really intriguing–I like the premise and I’m sold on the whole sci-fi aspect to the story. Very cool, Jordan!
Hi, Jordan,
Red sounds like a great start to a new trilogy!
I really like the idea of Genetically altered soldiers.
Are all the different kinds of creatures genetically altered?
Welcome, Jordan!
I have been hearing great things about Red for quite a while (I blame Shiloh Walker and her advanced copy 😉 ) and it sounds like a very interesting premise.
As an avid reader, I find it fascinating how each writer comes up with such different answers and execution to similar questions. I’d love to see how you do it.
Best of luck with the release!
I have this book on my TBB list. In fact I listed it on my blog today as I book that I do not want to wait for, I want it now 🙂
Thank you all. I appreciate the good wishes. 🙂 Now to answer your questions.
Wendy K,
***Is there any other character who stuck out in your mind while writing this story?
Yeah, the killer/s in the book came on the heels of Red. The killer/s were so vivid and strong that I ended up writing their point of view in first person. I don’t think it would’ve worked any other way. We see through their eyes while they’re ‘hunting’. The rest of the book is written in third person (ie she, he, etc.).
Amy C,
***Are all the different kinds of creatures genetically altered?
Yes, every being that’s considered an Other in my world has been genetically altered. Now that being said, they all don’t turn out the same. I took into consideration that no two people would be alike if they both were altered to be chimeras for example or vamps. Some of the latter beings can be in the sunlight with heavy sunscreen. Some vamps explode and turn into human shrapnel if the sun hits them. So you may kill them, but they’ll kill you back. *g*
Azteclady,
Our brains are definitely wired weird. LOL!
Jordan
Wow…this sounds like a really great book!! Thanks for the giveaway!!
Jordan, my son told me once (though I don’t claim *he* came up with it, mind), that he’s not weird–he’s gifted. 😉
Because I am a total ham, I took the idea for Red and made it into my Halloween costume. ; ) It’s such an interesting spin on the story, I’m intrigued to see how it pans out.
Hi Jordan,
Congrats on the upcoming release. I’m looking forward to reading “Red.”
I love shifter stories and the dark fantasy thriller storyline has me hooked.
[…] can find me HERE. For those of you who didn’t win a copy of RED, here is one more […]
Azteclady, LOL! That does sound better.
Thank you everyone. 🙂
Wow. Red sounds like a very exciting read and I love that you have given so much thought to your world and the beings inhabiting it.
I am (literally) salivating over this book. Won’t the release date hurry up and arrive already?!!!
Great post, Jordan! I can’t wait to read your book, either. 🙂
Catie,
You’re salivating and my stomach is about to burn a hole in itself. *ggg*
Little Lamb Lost,
Yes, I did give it a lot of thought. I just hope I got the pictures out of my head and onto the paper. 😉
To Everyone,
This book is definitely a departure for me in terms of previous work. Most of my early work has quite a bit of humor. The Dead World series is not like that, although I do try to put ‘some’ humor into book three.
I love the cover for your book. It was interesting reading the basis for your book.
Oooh, I love dark fantasy. I cannot wait to read it.
Sounds great!
I like this premise with the DNA, sounds great, Jordan. Been hearing good things around the blogs about Red.
Thanks Pam.
I’m not sure if I’m supposed to draw a name or if Fatin will pick a name. Anyone? *g*
Jordan
It can be either of us. If you want to do it, go ahead and pick a name. 🙂
Hope I’m not to late to have my name put in the hat as I have Red on my wishlist but haven’t the funds to get it yet 😦
By the way Jordan I too have always hated that the wolf dies in Red Riding Hood as I love wolves and don’t seetham as evil creatures. Guess that’s why one of my favourite paranormal heroes is the werewolf 😀
Please don’t enter me in this contest. 🙂 I just wanted to say that I absolutely loved reading Red and am eagerly waiting for the other two books. 🙂 They can’t come out fast enough for me. 🙂
Mad, I think I’d rather have you pick. No pressure. 😉
Ilona, You’re not too late. 🙂
Thanks Larena!
Hi Jordan~
Red sounds really interesting and I am looking forward to reading it.
This sounds like a great book. I’m intrigued by the description of the book and how it came to be.
