In A PLACE CALLED HARMONY readers will be looking at Harmony for the first time.  I enjoyed writing about the three men who were brave enough to travel half of Texas to build a town.  All three men came to me full and strong as did the women who loved them.  From the opening I was running full gallop with a plot.  With my great-grandmother’s chest sitting in front of my desk, I felt like I was loading up the wagon and heading for a new life.

 

Many times during the writing of this story I felt all three men standing behind me telling me their lives.  Patrick McAllen, young and full of dreams, thought of it as an adventure and believed love came easy.  Clint Truman felt old at thirty and didn’t believe in love.  When he heard he had to have a wife to get the job, he went to the prison gate and picked the first woman walking out.  And then there was Captain Gillian Matheson who loved his wife but also loved adventure.

 

All three men were prepared for the challenge of building a town but unprepared for the depth of love they found as they build their families.

 

I loved writing these men and I hope the readers will follow me into this historical romance.  If you’ve read a Harmony book, you’ll feel like you already know the characters.  If you’ve never read one this book would be a great place to start.  So, step into Harmony for the first time as the three families build a town while they form bonds and loves that last a lifetime.

Review – Rock Addiction by Nalini Singh

Love like a Rock Star! A Review for ROCK ADDICTION by Nalini Singh

Disclaimer: I received an ARC of this novel from the author in exchange for an honest review.

When Nalini Singh first announced that she had an entire new – contemporary – series underway, I was a little apprehensive but also very excited for this unexpected bonus series, starting with Fox and Molly’s story in Rock Addiction.

The Review:

“She wanted to bite his lower lip.”

Can anyone create characters as hot and intriguing as Nalini Singh? I have read books by a few authors that have come close, but no writer seems to have honed the technique as brilliantly as Ms. Singh. The characters in Rock Addiction, including the supporting cast, are fleshed out, complex and intense. While we get to read the Fox and Molly’s back stories in depth – both of which are unique and heart-wrenching – we only get a small glimpse of darkness surrounding the secondary characters.

Molly’s got legitimate reasons for shying away from the limelight. I’m not talking stage fright, but actual reasons that make you feel for her when they are revealed at least. Fox, on the other hand, is a rock star so publicity is part of the game. From right off the bat, these two seem like an unlikely couple, but Fox and Molly – Folly – seem to make it work.

However, I was a little hesitant to read about a rock star hero. (I’m a little prejudice against “famous” heroes because Hollywood has such a bad rap when it comes to romance and relationships among celebrities.) But, by the third chapter of Rock Addiction, I stopped thinking of Fox as a rock star hero, and started thinking of him as a Nalini Singh hero instead – smart, sexy, and uber-alpha…I was expected him to shift into a changeling at any point in the novel or spout wings! Seriously, Ms. Singh’s got the alpha-male formula down pat!

Likewise, Ms. Singh has a very distinctive voice in the romance genre. She controls her writing the way a poet would control the rhythm on his poem.

“You know when you get the whisper of a melody in your head, or the murmur of a song? And you have the gut feeling that if you could just hear the rest of it, just capture the music…you’d have something fucking amazing?”

There was very little about Rock Addiction that I didn’t find entertaining – thought I had moments of frustration with both the hero and heroine. They both jump a little fast from a one-night stand to affair to relationship – I’m talking Romeo and Juliet fast, although granted that Fox and Molly don’t get married and die in the span of five days. Both Fox and Molly know very little about each other, and seem to jump into this relationship and move in together despite the fact that they have obvious issues to work out.

But just when I would have judged Molly a weak character, she stands her ground so ultimately I was more impressed with her than frustrated. Fox, who had his own trauma to overcome, is so utterly devoted to Molly that it’s hard to stay mad at him for long.

But despite their erotic connection, sex wasn’t the first thing that came to his mind when he thought of Molly. It was her smile.

Fox proves that he is a romantic at heart and that this story, despite the scorching sex is really more about love than lust! (It certainly stole my four fifths of my heart!)

She has two love interests; a fallen demon with a hidden agenda and a bloodthirsty nephilim warrior, and all three sit at the core of the story.

The city of Harken is influenced by our world, but has a ruling government who clings to the old traditions. Deep inside Harken lies the Applecross quarter, with its shadowed streets home to those ignored by polite society — the satyr, elves, goblins and otherkin; creatures with mixed blood of the mystical races. Witches and warlocks also tread the streets of Applecross and live in fear of the Order of Guides, a bloodthirsty militant order dedicated to eradicating heretics from the city.

The city of Harken would be an exciting place to visit, and I’d never turn down having a brew with Lora after a hard days graft, but I think I’d probably leave when the fists start flying!

When I began PROMISE ME TEXAS I thought about how some people are actors and some are reactors.  Some, like my Beth McMurray, are tired of waiting and decide make change happen, while other watch. On a sudden impulse, she travels north, catching up to the train her fieance is on. She plans to surprise him.  Within hours, she realizes her mistake.  He’s not the man she thought him to be.  When a train wreck happens she has only a moment to stand by the bum, or turn to a stranger and claim him as hers.  As always, Beth jumps.

Andrew McLaughlin, on the other hand, has always been a reactor.  He watches people, writes about places and daydreams.  When the beautiful lady claims him as hers, he goes along.  Interested in the details of this story this pretty lady seems to be living in. When he first wakes up from the wreck, injured and disoriented, he finds they’re engaged.  Second time, Beth claims they are married. Third time, he sees two kids in the pictures.  Confused, he doses off wondering what the grandkids will look like when he wakes again.

PROMISE ME TEXAS is the story of a strong loving family who founded Whispering Mountain Ranch and how their big hearts open up to let others in. Readers often ask me where my characters come from.  That is a hard question to answer.  For the most part I just open my mind and let them walk in.

That’s what happened when I began this story.  Beth had been a baby in another book.  Andrew was lost, trying to find his reason for life.  He was one of those men she wouldn’t have given a second glance to if fate hadn’t stepped in and tossed them together.  Once she saw him, really saw him, she wouldn’t let go.

I think the hardest thing in life is finding what direction to head.  Real people as well as those in my head sometimes have trouble finding the road to take.  Maybe the important thing is to simply keep walking.

I had a great deal of fun writing about a writer trying to live in reality and a beautiful, spoiled woman trying to make up her life as she went along.  Everyone, even the outlaw leader, tries to give them advice, but somehow they find a crazy kind of love.In my experience it’s sometimes that crazy kind of love that is just right.

Enjoy the journey through Texas as you come along with me meeting people that are very real to me, if only in my mind.

“Okay, Mr. Rules, Mr. Gotta Be In Charge…we’re going to have to renegotiate some things.”

“Such as?”

“That,” Leah said, and pointed to the bed. “What the hell are we going to do about that?”

“If you’re referring to the amazing orgasms, then I vote for more as soon as possible.”

“At least that part isn’t pretend,” she said.

Jack frowned at her. “What does that mean?”

“Look, forget it. But we need to remember your first rule: this isn’t real and there are no hurt feelings.” She whirled away and began digging through her purse for her keys. “When people are bitching that I don’t have any fresh bread or donuts available today at the bakery, I’m going to blame you.”

“Sure,” he said, a little distracted by her reiterating his own rule. Which was ridiculous of him. “My reputation could use the boost.”

She rolled her eyes, headed to the door, then stopped, sighed, and came back to him. “You’re still naked.”

“Yeah,” he said. “Just in case you want to give me any more birthday presents…”
