Carrie Ann Ryan: Thank you so much y’all for having us on your blog! I love getting a chance to sit down with my characters and see what they’re up to.

Matt: Hi, Carrie Ann, thanks for inviting us!

Jordan: Yes, thanks, hon.

Carrie Ann: So, tell me, how was it to get your story told in Charmed Spirits?

Matt: Creepy?

Jordan: *smacks his arm* Really? Our love is creepy?

Matt: *rubs arm then kisses Jordan’s temple* I was trying to be cute since is a Halloween story.

Jordan: *rolls eyes* It was odd having the world know how we got back together, but I like knowing how cute and sexy Matt is.

Matt: *kisses her* Yep, that was a plus.

Carrie Ann: *rolls eyes* What were your first impressions of each other?

Matt: Well, we were five or so, so I think I hated her cooties.

Jordan: Yes, you ran from me, hunky man you are. But once those girls started to make fun of me for being a witch, you were my best friend.

Matt: Still am.

Carrie Ann: *awww* So, are things different now that your relationship is older, yet newer?

Matt: Other than now we don’t have to sneak behind the bleachers to make out?

Jordan: Though that is still fun…

Matt: *kisses Jordan*

Carrie Ann: *clears throat*

Jordan: *pulls back and blushes* Oh, sorry. What was the question? Oh yeah, well, we’re both more sure of ourselves and are more open. It works for both of us.

Carrie Ann: Matt, how do you feel about Jordan’s powers?

Matt: She’s amazing the way she is. It’s empowering to watch her in action.

Carrie Ann: Jordan, how do you feel about your powers?

Jordan: Safe. For the first time, safe.

Carrie Ann: What about that thing that happened with Matt? *wink*

Matt: *winks back* Readers will just have to see.

Jordan: Oooh, mysterious!

Carrie Ann: Where are you living now?

Matt: We moved into Jordan’s place since my apartment was going to be too small for when we have kids.

Jordan: Kids? Wow, look at you saying that word without fainting.

Matt: I’m growing up.

Carrie Ann: How is Holiday?

Matt: The town is changing. I mean, they knew about witches, but now with haunted houses and other things coming to town, they’re starting to get used to the paranormal. It works.

Jordan: Plus, with those people gone, the town is nicer.

Carrie Ann: How are the Cooper brothers?

Jordan: Sexy as ever.

Carrie Ann: Hell yeah!

Matt: *growls* My brothers are fine, though something is going on with Justin and he’s not telling us.

Carrie Ann: Okay, fun questions. What’s your favorite thing about each other?

Matt: Her spirit.

Jordan: That he’s always been there.

Carrie Ann: *awww*

Carrie Ann: Chocolate or Vanilla?

Matt: Anything I can lick off of Jordan.

Jordan: *blushes* Chocolate. What else?

Carrie Ann: Beer or Wine?

Matt: Beer, but I’ll drink a good wine.

Jordan: Same for me.

Carrie Ann: Soft or Hard?

Matt & Jordan: Hard.

Carrie Ann: Well, thanks y’all for coming and sitting down with me. I really do love y’all. And thank you so much for having us on the blog!

Charmed Spirits

Holiday, Montana Book 1

Jordan Cross has returned to Holiday, Montana after eleven long years to clear out her late aunt’s house, put it on the market, and figure out what she wants to do with the rest of her life. Soon, she finds herself facing the town that turned its back on her because she was different. Because being labeled a witch in a small town didn’t earn her many friends…especially when it wasn’t a lie.

Matt Cooper has lived in Holiday his whole life. He’s perfectly content being a bachelor alongside his four single brothers in a very small town. After all, the only woman he’d ever loved ran out on him without a goodbye. But now Jordan’s back and just as bewitching as ever. Can they rekindle their romance with a town set against them?

Warning: Contains an intelligent, sexy witch with an attitude and drop-dead gorgeous man who likes to work with his hands, holds a secret that might scare someone, and really, really, likes table tops for certain activities. Enough said.

“Have you seen the house yet?” Matt asked, his brows furrowed.

She shook her head and took her Coke and gum back with a small smile to Mr. Clancy. “Not yet. I was on my way over there. I just wanted to stop by for a drink.” She squared her shoulders and started toward the exit.

“You might find more than you bargained for if you want to get out quick.”

Jordan stopped and pivoted toward him. “Why? It should only take a few days to clean it out then slap on some paint, right?”

Matt shook his head and put his thumbs in his belt loops—too sexy. “Your grandmother got real sick at the end, and none of us knew.” Sadness washed over his face, and Jordan held back any similar feelings. “It may take more than you anticipated to get it ready.”

She let out a sigh and closed her eyes, counting to ten. “Then I’ll just have to deal with it, won’t I? I’m here for the duration in any case.” After all, she’d quit her PR job, a job that she hated, so she could find herself. God, how pathetic did that sound?

“Well, if you need anything, I’m here. And I bet my brothers would help out in a second.”

Jordan nodded, a smile forming. Damn those helpful, sexy Cooper brothers. “Thanks, if I need anything, I’ll holler. But I hope to do most of it on my own.”

Casey Lord knows that marital mistakes can spell disaster—her whole childhood was living proof. Her current boyfriend Reed is smart, steady, handsome, and from a socially prominent family. He should be the perfect mate, but she wants to be sure. She embarks on a river-rafting trip to do some serious soul-searching amidst the tranquility of nature. Instead, she is heaved into chaos when a flash flood sweeps her away and deposits her on a rocky beach in the wilderness.

Casey’s not the only one the river captures. Jack Raines is thrown from his river raft by the flood, and washes up on the same shore. Quiet and moody, he’s as different from Casey as night is from day, but he doesn’t mind: he’s happy for an unscheduled break in his sharply tangled life—a life he’s determined to keep secret from Casey.
It should be a desperate struggle to survive until they’re rescued, but their sojourn in RiverTime—their term for the isolated time and space they now inhabit—takes on an altogether different feel.

But change is inevitable—it’s only a matter of time before they are rescued. They each face the prospect of return to the world in their own way: Casey reasons about what is real and what is fantasy, while Jack pretends the outside world doesn’t exist.

When their rescuers arrive, neither is prepared for what awaits them—deceit, betrayal, and danger.

Publishing Digitally—4 Critical Elements to Consider for Your Publishing Strategy.

I chose to publish my debut novel RIVERTIME digitally for several reasons. First, e-publishing is no longer the wave of the future—we’re already there—and I liked the idea of riding the wave in. Second, I love print books, but I also love trees. Although the exact number of trees that are cut to make a book is hard to quantify, the effect of book manufacturing on the environment can’t be denied: in the U.S. alone, 30 million trees are cut each year to make books. Finally, I thought e-publishing would be simpler than the traditional route. I think that was right, but not for the reasons I believed at the time.

I was lucky enough to be picked up right away by Carina Press, the digital-first division of Harlequin. During the process of publication, and after, I learned a lot. Here are four elements I found were key:

Discovery. In the print world, a newly-launched book finds a place in a display window or on shelf at the front of a store, where it can catch the eye of hundreds of people each day. E-books don’t have that kind of incidental exposure for discoverability. Leaders in the industry recognize the problem (http://bit.ly/IRqKcc), but no hard-and-fast solutions have been found.

Access. Although this number increases every day, a recent Pew Center for Research study reported that 19% of Americans own an electronic device for reading. This means only about one fifth of the literate population has the technical capacity read your book (note, however, this number does not include smart phones) as compared to closer to 100% for print books.

Distribution. The distribution of e-books has blossomed. One advantage of e-books is the variety and accessibility of virtual bookstores, some of which focus on specialized genres. Another bright spot on the e-publishing horizon is the emergence of virtual lending. Thanks to applications like Overdrive, readers can check out e-books from public libraries just as they do print books. Don’t be shy about asking your publisher for the distribution plan for your book.

Promotion. Promotion of e-books is an evolving art, and one that authors must take an active part in. As would be expected, social media, such as Twitter and Facebook, figure prominently, although exactly how to best use them as tools for promotion is the subject of much debate. Find out from your publisher exactly how your book will be promoted, and how you can help. This allows you to fill in the gaps (depending on your agreement).

The sheer volume of information about e-literacy and the speed at which it changes can be dizzying, but it’s all about choices—and there are so many! It’s an exciting time to be publishing, and I hope you are as thrilled to be part of the e-revolution as I am.

The Book

The Tease

Meriel waited until they’d gotten on the freeway before she spoke. “He looks at you differently. Than he did before I mean. What’s going on?”

“I don’t know. I don’t!” she added when Meriel snorted. “We were friends. We played cards and watched movies and he consistently kicked my ass in every athletic activity we engaged in. And then last night . . . something happened and then it was just different. He’s all bossy now. And he kissed me!”

“How’s he kiss?”

The heat of her blush flamed over her face. “Really, really well. You know how back in high school you’d kiss and kiss your boyfriend? You didn’t have anything else to do yet so you kissed for hours and it was so . . .” Lark sighed. “Wonderful and sexy and totally thrilling. He’s that kind of kisser.”

“I knew he would be. Okay so what happened last night to change things? Was it the fight with the mages?”

“It started when I got back from my date. I brought him back a huge slice of cheesecake. You know what a whore he is for sweets.”

“Um, no I don’t. But you did. I’ll continue with that in a moment. Finish.”

“Anyway, so I hung out and he ate and we talked. I didn’t even have a drink. He was pissy about the date. Didn’t like that I went out with a shifter. Probably because he’s a Lycian and all alpha and there’s some sort of beef between them or some such. He didn’t want me going out for a walk on my own. We bickered, went outside after he convinced me to run at his house and stay over and then, bam, we were attacked.”

She heaved a sigh.

Meriel laughed. “There’s no beef between Cascadia and Simon. The local wolves respect him and they give each other a lot of space. He can be . . . well . . . I mean, he’s not just Lycian, but a prince so he thinks like one sometimes but he’s big enough and powerful enough that he gets away with it.”

Lark nodded. “God yes.”

“Anyway, so he’s just fine with the local wolves. It’s not the who, it’s the date itself. He’s totally acting to mark his territory.”

“You! He can’t stop looking at you. He wants you at his house. Driving his car. He’s taking care of you.”

“But why? Before I went to Toronto he never looked at my boobs. Well,” she amended, “not more than the way all straight guys look at boobs. I know he thinks I’m a fashion disaster. He’s all GQMF and I’m totally not.”

“GQ mother fucker. You know all suave and gorgeous, wearing handmade Italian loafers and suits he has made in London. I’m not that girl. And then this morning he kissed my knuckles. He sniffed me and then he laid a kiss on me. Well more than one. He said he wanted to take a bite but then he backtracked and said he wanted more time. I’m just confused.”

“Whatever set him off, he’s clearly liking what you’ve got now.”

“Maybe. Could be he’s just horny. Boys are like that.”

The Blurb

The life of Lark Jaansen, hunter in Clan Gennessee, has been shaped by violence and unrest and it defines her future. Well-trained and resilient, she’s met her militaristic match in Simon Leviathan, a warrior not of this world. Locked in mutual admiration, and a desire so hot it burns, Lark and Simon have something else in common: they love the dark, and as a shadow is cast over their world, they’re each coming into their own.

A mysterious war has been waged among the Others. As witches and humans turn against each other, as fae retreat in fear, and as vampires rise, Lark and Simon discover that an unseen force is behind it. A single, hungry entity older than recorded history has returned to gorge on the magick of his victims. He is the Magister, nothing less than the end of time. Finding him is Lark and Simon’s first hope. Surviving him is their last.

Cornwall, 1812

Gwenyth Killigrew, the Witch of Kerrow, has seen the tragic fate that awaits any man she’s foolish enough to fall in love with. Yet she yearns for a daughter to carry on her healer’s wisdom and otherworldly gifts of Sight.  When Rafe Fleming, a notorious smuggler, washes ashore near her home, she thinks she’s found the man to father that child.

Rafe knew his time as an outlaw was coming to an end. He just hadn’t realized it would be on the dangerous Cornwall coast, in the home of an alluring witch. After Gwenyth saves him, they strike a bargain: he’ll give her a child, and she’ll help him find a proper wife so he can reenter society and pick up the pieces of his shattered life.

But the more time Rafe spends with Gwenyth—in and out of bed—the more he questions what he thinks he wants. He must choose between the wife he needs and the woman he desires…if falling for Gwenyth doesn’t kill him first.

At its heart, DANGEROUS MAGIC is a story about the struggle to find one’s place in the world.

Rafe Fleming is a man caught between his family’s life of privilege and his occupation as a smuggler captain while Gwenyth Killigrew is a woman whose mystical gift of Sight has always set her apart from those around her.

In a larger sense, this could be the story of the book itself.

DANGEROUS MAGIC was my first attempt at blending two of my reading loves—fantasy and regency romance—into what was at the time almost an unheard of sub-genre—historical/paranormal romance. Maybe growing up on Mary Stewart, Marion Zimmer Bradley, and JRR Tolkein along with Georgette Heyer, Jane Austen, and Patricia Veryan, made adding a mystical element to my regency setting almost inevitable. Whatever the cause, magic kept creeping into the regency romances I wrote, and repressing the  urge only made me want to include it more.

Luckily, my agent loved the book. So did the Golden Heart judges. Still for one reason and another, it languished among the unsold on my hard drive until Carina Press, who believed in the story, the characters, the setting, and yes…the fantasy, decided to publish it.

For historical and regency romance devotees who believe in the power of magic and fans of paranormal and fantasy who want a satisfying trip back in time, I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Just as Gwenyth reassures Rafe, “You’re no longer just the petted son of a noble house, nor are you wholly the free-trading smuggler captain of the Cormorant. You’re both of these men. In the same way you learned to navigate the shoals and reefs you’ll learn to find your way between worlds.”

So too have I found my way between history and fantasy and gained a place and a home for DANGEROUS MAGIC.

Te celebrate both the upcoming holiday and the upcoming release of Gwenyth and Rafe’s story, let me know what you’ll be dressing up as this Halloween and be entered to win a free e-book copy of DANGEROUS MAGIC.

I have a confession:  I love men of the sea. Perhaps it’s because I’ve lived on the coast, surrounded by the lore of men who’ve lived and sometimes died on the sea.  The waters near my home have been filled with ships carrying sailors and buccaneers for centuries. Military battles have been won and lost off these shores for centuries, and Blackbeard found a haven on the Outer Banks of North Carolina long before the beaches of Okracoke Island were filled with tourists. And, I must admit, Johnny Depp’s sly and sexy performance as Captain Jack Sparrow only fueled the fire in my heart for buccaneers.

Eye patches, earrings, walking the plank…these images fill our thoughts when we hear the word pirate.  I suspect the word privateer does not garner nearly the same reaction. I’m fairly sure movie goers would not have turned out in droves for  Privateers of the Caribbean. In my opinion, privateers have been shortchanged in legend. Privateers were as bold and daring as their pirate brethren, with one crucial difference: they were backed by governmental authority. In fact, some pirates made the transition to privateers due to one simple fact: a government was able to make use of their ruthless services. Mercenaries of the seas, authorized by a country’s leaders to attack enemy ships, privateers were skilled additions to a country’s battle forces and seized enemy cargo and vessels for profit. By disrupting enemy trade and commandeering ships into military service, privateers aided their government while filling their own coffers.

Unlike military ships that aimed to sink enemy vessels, privateers aimed to capture vessels and plunder their cargos. Privateers proved to be a significant force in naval warfare during the sixteenth through nineteenth centuries. Though not formally commissioned as warships, privateers sailed under the authorization granted in a letter of marque, a formal contract between the government and the privateer. A letter of marquee provided formal authorization for the privateer’s activities, spelling out the nationalities of ships the privateer was allowed to attack and the territory in which it could operate while ensuring the government would retain a share of the plundered goods.

Throughout history, privateers have been celebrated and reviled. Sir Francis Drake and Sir John Hawkins aided Britain’s quest for naval superiority against the Spanish Armada in the sixteenth century, becoming national heroes in the process.  Notorious English pirate Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard, is believed to have operated as a privateer off the coast of Jamaica during Queen Anne’s War prior to turning to piracy around 1714.  Nearly a century later, American privateers played a significant role in the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and even the Civil War. Notorious privateer Jean Lafitte led his crew in the defense of New Orleans against the British Navy during the Battle of New Orleans, and daring captains defied Union blockades of southern ports.

My Ellora’s Cave debut, Claimed by the Captain, an American merchant’s daughter finds herself the pawn in a daring privateer’s quest for retribution.  Here’s a little about the story:

Jason Kane lost everything to one man’s treachery. Thirsting for vengeance, the ruthless privateer abducts Catherine Farrell, daughter of the swindler who destroyed his family. Intending to extract the debt owed him from his tempting prisoner, he plans a cold-blooded conquest. Aroused by his captive’s sensual beauty, he claims her with seductive persuasion. As he plunges her into a world of pleasure, her passionate surrender sparks a deep longing in his heart and soul.

Catherine Farrell lived the sheltered life of a prosperous merchant’s daughter until Captain Jason Kane made her a pawn in his quest for retribution. Claimed by the captain, she finds herself at the mercy of a man who will settle for nothing less than complete domination. His tender mastery awakens Catherine’s passions and stirs her heart. If only she can convince him that love is far more satisfying than sweet revenge.

You can find more information about the story at my website, www.tarakingston.com or at the Ellora’s Cave site. Hope you’ll stop by.

Leave a comment about this post and you’ll be entered to win a free e-copy of Claimed by the Captain. The winner will be announced Friday, August 12. Thanks for stopping by!

In Emma Holly’s FLIPPING FOR CHELSEA, Shay and Liam shared an unforgettable night with their lifelong friend, Chelsea, awakening a rush of forbidden feelings—feelings they have to reckon with when the three reunite, and the unrequited lust between them is too much to bear.

Though Ava left her hard-knock Georgia childhood behind, she never forgot Luca and Angelo. Together they were best friends with a bond that could never be broken. But when she returns, the three must decide whether to face the fires that burn between them, or forgo their desires forever in Lauren Dane’s DIRTY/BAD/WRONG.

In Megan Hart’s JUST ONE NIGHT, fun-loving couple Kerry and Jeremy find themselves in a triangle of trouble when Kerry’s old crush, Brian, returns for a school reunion, and Jeremy gives her his enthusiastic approval to seduce him. But while Jeremy has no trouble sharing Kerry, Brian isn’t sure he can handle what’s coming.

Years ago, Walker walked out on Madeline when she needed him most. Now, the ex-Secret Service agent is back—hired to protect both Madeline and their billionaire friend, Tony. Madeline is determined to make him pay for denying her desires—and she’s not above bringing Tony in to sweeten the deal in Bethany Kane’s ON THE JOB.

Just One Night

That’s the title of my story in Three to Tango, an anthology I’m proud to be in with such great company as Bethany Kane, Lauren Dane and Emma Holly. When I was asked to do the story, all I had to go on was that it needed to be a menage or threesome premise, and that it had to be a romance. Strangely, the idea that sprang first to my mind was not about three people getting frisky in the sack, but instead about a woman caught between two men. Sometimes, that happens!

Kerry and Jeremy have been dating for a while. Living together. They don’t talk about marriage and love and babies, but she’s fine with that. Kerry loves Jeremy — at least she feels like she does, in whatever way it is that works for them. She has an unfulfilled fantasy, though, and the chance to make it happen. Jeremy’s not a jealous guy. In fact, just the opposite. He gets turned on by the thought of Kerry with another man and encourages her to fulfill her dream of having hot sex with her high school crush, Brian. So long as she comes back and tells him all about it, Jeremy’s more than cool with it. But as Kerry discovers, sometimes just one night isn’t enough!

Relationships take a lot of work, even with just two partners. Add a third and things become complicated, as Kerry discovers when she seduces Brian. Having two lovers takes up a lot of time and energy. Sometimes, a fantasy isn’t what it’s cracked up to be, and getting what you want means someone else has to go without.

Writing this story got me thinking about how easy it can be to fall in or out of love, and how twisty the path to “true love” can be. How people don’t always meet or start relationships in traditional ways. The world is full of romantic stories that do not begin with “Boy Meets Girl” and still end with “Happily Ever After.” I hope you enjoy reading Just One Night as much as I liked writing it — which was a lot!

I love to write my novellas as reunion stories. Partly because with a shorter length having a partially established relationship and trust level is a framework for a more intense reunion.

There’s lots to use in a reunion story. A great deal of emotion, which works to hold the story together and to show readers who these characters are. Sometimes they parted the first time amicably. Sometimes after a tragic event. Sometimes it’s rife with upset and hard feelings.

And sometimes I write them as a ménage to add another element to the story with a third person.

Sometimes it’s not that easy and that’s where dirty/bad/wrong falls. Because Ava didn’t cheat on Angelo and Luca. She didn’t hurt them by saying things in a fight. She had to leave Petal to survive and even though she loved both men, they were all little more than kids at the time. She had to go and make her life far away from all the things that had beaten her down.

So when she comes back some time later, it’s not to two men that are angry at her. Or who hate her. They’ve had good lives too. Angelo is a retired NFL all star player who now practices entertainment law and does guest spots on sports television during the season.  Luca has a design and architecture business.

But they both still love her and each other. This group had formed at an important time in all their lives and so upon her return, it’s a struggle for all three to find a way through.

In dirty/bad/wrong it’s a reunion of their relationship – of the unique energy they create as three. Ava has to believe she’s worth it, that she can have something back in Petal and her men have to believe she’s really coming back and that they can make it work. Each of them has to process it differently.

Oh and I got to return to Petal, which was fun!

I hope you all enjoy reading Ava, Angelo and Luca’s story!
