Campbell_What a Duke DaresWhat woman in her right mind would say no to marrying the dashing Duke of Sedgemoor? Miss Penelope Thorne, that’s who. She’s known Camden Rothermere since they were children-and she also knows she’d bring nothing but scandal to his name.Cam can hardly believe Penelope turned down his proposal. But if she wants to run off to the Continent and set the rumor mill ablaze, he can’t stop her. Then her brother’s dying request sends him to bring home the one woman he thought he’d finally gotten over.

The only way they’ll both get back to London without their reputations in tatters is to pretend they’re married during the journey. That means kissing like they mean it and even sharing a bed-until it becomes hard to tell where the game ends and true desire begins . . .

“How can you flirt when we’re about to find a watery grave?”

“How can I not?” His voice roughened into urgency. “If the ship goes down, I’ll be damned if I die without kissing you.”

She started without moving away. “This is a mistake.”

He laughed, wondering how his demise became cause for amusement. Perhaps Pen’s courage bolstered his. Most people would cower at the raging seas, but valiant Penelope Thorne met the storm and the man who wanted her with her head high and a smile on her lips. At that moment, if he’d been capable of love, he might imagine that he loved her. “The thought of kissing you has tortured me.”

Her hands linked around his neck. To steady herself or because she wanted to touch him? He hardly cared as long as she stayed near. He’d never seen her like this. Like she yearned for his touch the way he yearned for hers. Desire pounded harder than the waves outside. Thunder cracked close.

“Oh, hell, Pen,” he groaned, firming his grip on her. He was incapable of gentleness. The storm outside was a pale echo of the storm in his blood.

On another guttural groan, his mouth crashed down . . .

The lovely people at Forever Romance have given me three ARCs of DUKE OF MIDNIGHT by Elizabeth Hoyt. One of my favorite series, I practically begged to get an early peek at Maximus’ book. Everything about it just worked for me. I adored both Maximus and Artemis. *sigh*

Anywho, like I said, I’ve got 3 ARCs to give away. Only stipulation is that it’s only open to US residents.

Before I get comments of “that’s not fair!”, I’ll offer the ARC I was sent to read as the 4th prize, that IS open to International readers. This one will be sent by me while the other three will be sent by the publisher. When leaving a comment, please say if you’re US or International so there is no confusion when I pick the winners. Sound good to you? 😉

Now, for the contest….just let me know which of Elizabeth Hoyt’s heroes/heroines have been your favorite and what you love best about her writing.

Twenty years ago Maximus Batten witnessed the brutal murders of his parents. Now the autocratic Duke of Wakefield, he spends his days ruling Parliament. But by night, disguised as the Ghost of St. Giles, he prowls the grim alleys of St. Giles, ever on the hunt for the murderer. One night he finds a fiery woman who meets him toe-to-toe-and won’t back down . . .

Artemis Greaves toils as a lady’s companion, but hiding beneath the plain brown serge of her dress is the heart of a huntress. When the Ghost of St. Giles rescues her from footpads, she recognizes a kindred spirit-and is intrigued. She’s even more intrigued when she realizes who exactly the notorious Ghost is by day . . .

Artemis makes a bold move: she demands that Maximus use his influence to free her imprisoned brother-or she will expose him as the Ghost. But blackmailing a powerful duke isn’t without risks. Now that she has the tiger by the tail, can she withstand his ire-or the temptation of his embrace?

After dropping out of pastry school and messing up her big break on a reality cooking show, Leah Sullivan needs to accomplish something in her life. But when she returns home to Lucky Harbor, she finds herself distracted by her best friend, Jack Harper. In an effort to cheer up Jack’s ailing mother, Dee, Leah tells a little fib – that she and Jack are more than just friends. Soon pretending to be hot-and-heavy with this hunky firefighter feels too real to handle . . .

No-strings attachments suit Jack just fine – perfect for keeping the risk of heartbreak away. But as Jack and Leah break every one of their “just friends” rules, he longs to turn their pretend relationship into something permanent. Do best friends know too much about each other to risk falling in love? Or will Jack and Leah discover something new about each other in a little town called Lucky Harbor?

Short Excerpt:

“Okay, Mr. Rules, Mr. Gotta Be In Charge…we’re going to have to renegotiate some things.”

“Such as?”

“That,” Leah said, and pointed to the bed. “What the hell are we going to do about that?”

“If you’re referring to the amazing orgasms, then I vote for more as soon as possible.”

“At least that part isn’t pretend,” she said.

Jack frowned at her. “What does that mean?”

“Look, forget it. But we need to remember your first rule: this isn’t real and there are no hurt feelings.” She whirled away and began digging through her purse for her keys. “When people are bitching that I don’t have any fresh bread or donuts available today at the bakery, I’m going to blame you.”

“Sure,” he said, a little distracted by her reiterating his own rule. Which was ridiculous of him. “My reputation could use the boost.”

She rolled her eyes, headed to the door, then stopped, sighed, and came back to him. “You’re still naked.”

“Yeah,” he said. “Just in case you want to give me any more birthday presents…”

FireInsideThe blurb:

Lanie Heron isn’t looking for love-no surprise, considering her last serious relationship nearly got her killed. So when Lanie propositions Hop Kincaid, all she wants is one wild night with the hot-as-hell biker who patrols with the Chaos Motorcycle Club . . .

For Hop, Lanie has always been untouchable. She’s too polished and too classy for his taste. But when she gives Hop the once-over with her bedroom eyes and offers him a night in paradise, he can’t say no. And he doesn’t regret it when he finds that Lanie is the best thing that’s ever happened to him-in or out of bed. Now the trick will be to convince her of that.

It’s been 7 years since Lanie’s fiance was murdered and she almost died with him. During that time, she’s shut herself off from dating. She has no interest in that. If she doesn’t get involved, then she can’t be hurt. However, Hop has been on her radar for years and she has needs. Just one night together, no messy emotions. That’s her plan, anyway. It all falls apart when Hop realizes Lanie is exactly what he wants in his life and he’s not letting her walk away.

I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about Hop as a hero after his actions in Motorcycle Man but Kristen Ashley made it work. Sexy, I was expecting. I wasn’t expecting a father devoted to his kids or how gentle he’d be with Lanie as she battled her demons. Lanie was a little flighty and a lot of drama but I really enjoyed watching her make mistakes, grow, and open herself up to love again. And Hop and his mustache were just flat-out hot.

In MOONGLOW, book 2 in the Darkest London series, Inspector Winston Lane was attacked by a were and his life was changed. He never knew supernatural beings existed but his wife of 14 years, Poppy, was more than aware. She has powers of her own and has been on the front line of the battle for their entire marriage. Trust destroyed, Winston doesn’t give Poppy a chance to explain. He just leaves.

WINTERBLAZE picks up a few months later. Disfigured and no longer an inspector, Winston has left for Paris to decide his next steps and try to put the feelings for his wife to rest. He fails miserably. He still loves Poppy but can’t get past her lies. When Poppy shows up on the ship traveling back to London, he hopes she’s there to grovel. To try to apologize and explain her deceptions. To give him an excuse to take her back.

When Poppy gets word that a demon she has fought in the past has targeted Winston, she immediately heads to France to protect him. It doesn’t matter that he walked out on their marriage and broke her heart, she’ll keep him safe. Filled with hurt, anger, and distrust they must find a way to work together to stop this demon or they will lose everything that matters.

With so many twists and turns, lies and secrets revealed, WINTERBLAZE kept me on the edge of my seat. The first bombshell is dropped in the first couple of chapters and the hits just kept on coming. Early in the book, Winston discovers Poppy isn’t the only liar in their marriage. His actions set in motion the current events. He needs to earn Poppy’s forgiveness, as well. They were both to blame for the collapse of their marriage. Winston always felt Poppy was holding back but he never pushed. Poppy was always waiting for Winston to find out the truth and hate her so she never fully let him in. They took each other for granted. Watching the two of them try to rebuild their relationship into something stronger was beautiful and sometimes painful to read. Winston has to learn to forgive Poppy and accept her for who she is and Poppy has to let go of the fear and trust that this time Winston will stand and fight for them and not just walk away.

I loved every part of this book. The suspense, the darkness, the incredibly hot sexy times, the angst, and even the parts that made me flinch. This series has only gotten better with every book and I can’t wait to see what’s next in this world filled with things that go bump in the night and the heroes and heroines that bump back.

Favorite quote:

Now he knew with every fiber of his being that she was his. Not as a possession, but his in a way that made him who he was. Take Poppy out of the equation, and he was all wrong, an uncompleted work. He’d thought he’d known his wife all these years. Now? Now he understood his wife.

Agent Jess Harris is back in another thrilling installment of Debra Webb’s Faces of Evil series.

Jess is ready to start the next chapter in her life as the new deputy chief of Birmingham’s major crimes division. But with her first love, Chief of Police Dan Burnett, acting as her new boss, it looks like Jess won’t be able to put the past behind her that easily.

Jess has decided to focus all of her attention on work when a celebrated ballet instructor is found dead by one of her students. Though Jess’s instincts tell her otherwise, the death is ruled an accident, and the case is assigned to another division. Still, Jess can’t shake the feeling that there’s more to the story, and her investigation leads her into the worlds of Birmingham’s gang culture and its powerful elite.

Now Jess’s investigation has dug a little too deep, and there’s a target painted on her own forehead. Will she be able to solve the crime before her own life is in jeopardy?

As an author, I get asked some of the funniest questions by friends and strangers alike. For example: What makes a woman who lives in a 112 year old house and who salvages junk to decorate her home and spends every extra minute in the garden write books about evil murderers? That’s a question I get whenever someone new moves into the neighborhood. The folks who’ve lived here for a few years know the story. But, every so often I have to explain to the newbies in this old village. I have loved scary, creepy stories since I was knee-high to a duck. I love figuring out unique ways to commit murder and digging up the motives that would prompt my character to do the deed. But mostly, I love writing about the ordinary folks like Jess Harris and Dan Burnett who step up to the plate and sacrifice much to become the heroes of my stories.

Another question I get really often is: Where in the world do you get your ideas? Well, let me just tell you, I could get inspiration at an estate sale (I’ve done it before!) or a neighborhood picnic. Just about anywhere. All it takes is watching a person carry out some routine activity like throw a few steaks on the grill or find an almost new hedge trimmer at a tag sale. People watching is my favorite way but I also read LOTS of newspapers. You’d be surprised what you find in the local police blotters.

Here’s another favorite: Have you ever used someone from your real life in one of your stories? That is a secret I will take to my grave. Suffice to say, we all have our ways of getting even! But, just to tickle your curiosity, when you read OBSESSION, the first book in the Faces of Evil series, remember that I am keeping that secret.

This question always cracks me up: What does a person like you do to relax? I honestly think some who ask this question (judging by the expression on their faces) expect me to say observe autopsies or ride alongs with cops. The answer is when I’m not working I do all those regular things that everyone does—house cleaning, cooking, laundry, etc. What I do for fun is gardening and exploring junk stores and old house. I love old houses!

And finally, the question that never fails to come out of someone’s mouth whenever I’m doing a book signing: Can you tell me where the bathroom is? My answer is always the same, “I’m sorry, I can’t tell you where the bathroom is, but I’d love to tell you about my new book.”

Even though you didn’t ask me about the bathroom, I’ll tell you about my latest release. POWER is the third book in my new Faces of Evil series. RT Book Reviews magazine gave POWER  four and a half stars and said: Jess Harris doesn’t have to go looking for trouble–it finds her. Jess is one of the toughest, smartest, most stubborn lady cops to strut the pages lately, but Webb’s given her just enough vulnerability to keep her likable. This third entry in the Faces of Evil series is a hard-to-put-down police procedural with pitch-perfect voice, well-developed characters and a setting that is as much a part of the cast as the protagonists. I hope you’ll check out my new series! Come and visit me at www.thefacesofevil.com!

Thanks so much for inviting me to blog with you! I’m so excited to be here talking about my latest release, PLEASURES OF A TEMPTED LADY.

PLEASURES is the last of a trilogy of novels about the Donovan Sisters, five sisters raised in the Caribbean and sent to London to marry proper husbands when they reach a certain age. The Donovans aren’t your average family of the London ton, so when they arrive, all kinds of juicy scandal ensues.

I’m especially excited about PLEASURES OF A TEMPTED LADY, because it’s about Meg, the Donovan sister who was lost at sea for eight long years. She has to go through QUITE a bit to get her happily ever after, and I hope readers enjoy her tumultuous journey. I sure had fun writing it!

Captain William Langley knows the ocean well, but nothing could prepare him for what he discovers adrift on the cold Irish Sea. The tiny boat carries two passengers: a child–and Meg Donovan, Will’s long-lost love. Meg’s disappearance at sea eight years ago was a devastating blow. Now she’s back, as beautiful as ever, and with secrets as deep as Will’s own…

After years held captive by a cold-blooded pirate, Meg has finally escaped with little Jake, the boy she’s come to love as if he were her own. But the pirate wants his revenge–and Meg must do whatever it takes to shield Jake from the madman. Determined not to lose Meg again, Will vows to protect them both, yet Meg can’t risk putting the only man she’s ever loved in danger. With the threat to her safety growing, and her passion for Will burning brighter every day, surrendering herself to Will might be a pleasure too tempting to resist…

Here’s a short excerpt from the book, wherein our hero, Will Langley, finds his long-lost love and his own Sleeping Beauty floating in a tiny sailboat after a storm has ravaged the sea.

Will bent over and reached down for her, managing to grasp her beneath the armpits, and with the two men’s help, he was able to maneuver her onto the deck. It wasn’t that she was heavy—she was actually a slip of a thing. But the movement of the ocean combined with her dead weight and the frothy torn clothing combined to make it a cumbersome process.

Cradling her head, Will gently lay her on the deck.

“She’s breathing,” Jasper gasped as he scrambled up the ladder. “She lives!”

Will heaved out a sigh of relief.

Holding the little boy—who looked to be about five or six years old, though Will was certainly no authority on children—Briggs stepped onto the deck. The four men hovered over the woman. Crouched near her feet, Jasper cleared his throat and tugged the filthy hem of her dress down over the torn and dirty stockings covering her legs.

Something about those legs was…familiar.

With his heart suddenly pounding hard, Will raised his hand to push away the blond mass of hair obscuring her features. Her hair was dense with wetness and salt, but he cleared it from her face, his callused fingertips scraping over the soft curve of her cheek.

“Oh, God,” Will choked, his hand frozen over her hair. “Oh, my God.”

“What is it, Captain?” The question came from somewhere above him.

Will blinked away the water threatening to stream from his eyes. Was he overtired? Was he having visions? Had the intensity of the storm and lack of proper sleep caused him to have strange, perverse dreams?

No. God no, he was awake. There was too much color—the dewy flesh of her skin, the light brown spatter of freckles on her nose, the pink and white of her dress. Beyond the rancid smell of bilge water—originating mostly from the boy, he thought—he could smell her, too. She’d always smelled sweet and pure, like the sugarcane from the plantation in Antigua where she’d been raised.

Was she a ghost?

Half fearing she’d evaporate like fog beneath his fingers, he clasped both sides of her face and turned it upward so she would have been staring at him if her eyes were open.

“You’re real,” he whispered. He crouched over her mouth and nose and closed his eyes as the soft puff of her breath washed over his cheek.

Jasper was right—she was alive.

This was impossible. She’d been lost at sea eight years ago—on the other side of the Atlantic. Had she been adrift all this time, like some sleeping beauty, waiting for him—her prince—to find her and kiss her awake?

Did he dare hope that this was a true miracle and not some cruel joke of fate?

“Meg,” he breathed. The dewy feel of her skin beneath his fingertips swept through him like the stroke of a rose petal. “Meg? Wake up,” he murmured. “Wake up, love.”

The urge overcame him, and forgetting the men staring at him—at them—he bent forward and pressed his lips to hers.
