Q&A with Larissa Ione

NT: Redeeming the bad boy is popular topic in romance but it would be hard to find a badder boy than Reseph. As Pestilence, he did some horrible things. Was writing Rogue Rider more of a challenge because of that or was it one you looked forward to?

Larissa: Good question! And you know, writing Rogue Rider was definitely one I looked forward to. I LOVE the challenge of making someone the reader hates into someone they can root for. I also love torturing characters (I have a touch of sadist in me, I think!*g*) So I enjoyed writing Reseph’s story, especially because he’s a fun character whether he’s evil or good!

 

NT: There is a pretty big secret (shh! We aren’t telling what it is 😉 ) revealed in Rogue Rider. Did you know it was coming from the beginning or was it a surprise to you, too?

Larissa: I’ve known since Sin Undone! It was funny though, because when I told my editor during a discussion of Eternal Rider revisions, she actually gasped. Loved that! So I’m hoping readers will be surprised (pleasantly,) though I know that enough hints have been thrown out that many readers already suspect.

 

NT: What’s next? You’ve mentioned that the next book will be set in the Demonica world. Will it be part of the Demonica series or a new spin-off series with a new name?

Larissa: It’s a Demonica book that will transition from the Lords of Deliverance series back into the Demonica series. Really, they are pretty much the same series, but we’re getting back to using the Demonica designation.

Ah…curse words. They add so much to a scene, don’t they? Or, wait…do they?

 

I often hear readers object to harsh language in the romance novels they read, and I’ve gotten my fair share of email from angry readers who take me to task for using a lot (admittedly, a LOT) of curse words in my books. They say that the words are unnecessary. I even had one person who emailed me to say that by using a certain word, I was disrespecting my readers.

 

I #^@%ing disagree. Heh.

 

See, I decided a long time ago that I would not water down my stories or my voice in any way. If I’ve got a tough, angry character, in a gritty, dark world, and he’s just found out that everyone he loves has been captured and tortured, he’s not going to say, “Oh…darn. Those jerks!” THAT would be disrespecting my readers.

 

I write gritty, dark stories that feature military men, demon-slayers, vampires, werewolves, and demons. These are people who don’t say “golly gee and darn.” I use real-world language, because anything else wouldn’t ring true. My readers deserve better than diluted language.

 

So for those of you who like hot, lethal men who don’t hold back with their language — or their desires — do I have a book for you!

 

Lethal Rider, the third book in the Lords of Deliverance series (and the 8th in the Demonica series) has just released. In this book, events that took root all the way back in Pleasure Unbound (Demonica book #1,) will come full circle. There are apocalyptic events, huge revelations, and twists that will make your jaw drop (I hope!) There’s also lots of curse words, cuz hello…it’s the end of the world!

 

Maybe.

Blog Anniversary Giveaway #7: Larissa Ione

Sadly this is my last giveaway of the week. The week has flown by! 😦 I want to thank you all for helping me celebrate my Blog Anniversary and hope you enjoyed all the goodies offered this week.

Today, I’m sharing my love of Larissa Ione’s Demonica series. PLEASURE UNBOUND, book 1, came out last year and I fell in love. The world Larissa created reminded me a lot of my two favorite shows. Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Angel. How I loved me some Angel and Spike. *sigh* Broke my heart when both series ended, seeing them on TV now is just not the same, in my opinion. I love the snarkiness of the characters, not to mention the humor and sarcasm in it. Then book 2, DESIRE UNCHAINED came out at the beginning of this year, followed immediately by book 3, PASSION UNLEASHED. The books rapidly took a place on my Keeper Shelf. I loved each book but I have to say, of the brothers, Wraith was my favorite. He was such a bad boy. I’m pretty sure I annoyed the crap out of Larissa with my emails about this series and I was cheering and clapping her on when she said there were more books to come in this series. ECSTASY UNVEILED will be out January 26, 2010. I have to keep reminding myself that it’s not that long a wait. That I can be patient. That I have many many (many!!) books in the TBR waiting to be read but the fangirl in me isn’t listening to my reasons. She wants me to STFU and she wants the next book, doesn’t care about the others in the TBR. 😉

For those who aren’t familiar with the Demonica world, Passion Unleashed is the third in a series of books that are set in and around an underworld hospital run by vampires, demons, and werewolves. It’s sort of, Buffy The Vampire Slayer meets E.R. *g*

In Passion Unleashed, bad boy vampire demon, Wraith, is in a lot of trouble. He managed to get himself poisoned, and the only cure in the universe is a woman named Serena Kelley, who holds the antidote – in the form of her virginity. Let’s just say that she’s not giving that up for just anyone.

But Wraith isn’t just anyone. He’s an incubus, a demon made for sex…a male no female can resist.

Fun!

So…he’s a demon, but how is he also a vampire? That’s a long story that is revealed over the course of the books, but I can tell you WHY I did that to him.

See, when I originally came up with the concept of the underworld hospital, I decided that I wanted demons to be the main characters/heroes. I adore vampires, but they are so popular, have been done over and over, and have been done extremely well. I wanted something different, something I could make my own.

So…demon doctors!

But I still love those vamps. Clearly, I needed to get my vampire fix and make one of my guys a vampire. That guy is Wraith. He totally loves the demon side of himself, but he detests the vampire side. Oh, he doesn’t mind the hunting and the feeding, but he despises other vampires, wants nothing to do with them, and would rather kill one than look at it.

Yup, good times with the vampires! : )
