Maya Banks has shared the cover for After the Storm, book 8 in the KGI series. Donovan!

Over the years, Donovan Kelly has fought relentlessly for justice, women and children always holding a special place in his heart. Working side by side with his brothers, Donovan has witnessed firsthand the toll it’s taken—physically, mentally, and emotionally—on his loved ones, and the innocent lives caught in the crossfire. What he never expects is for his next mission to happen right on his home turf—or for it to take a very personal turn.

Picturesque Kentucky Lake is the perfect place for a soul in search of safe harbor. A beautiful stranger has arrived—desperate, breathless, and on the run from a dark past closing in on her and the younger siblings she has vowed to protect. Donovan must now draw on every resource at his disposal—if he wants to save a woman and the children who may prove to be his destiny.

ride_350.jpgGray Preston was born into money, but he’s built his racing empire on hard work and muscle. Now, with millions of fans, his senator father sends one of his aides, Evelyn Hill, to elicit Gray’s help in garnering votes for his upcoming national election. Gray wants nothing to do with his estranged father’s campaign, but Evelyn can be pretty persuasive. She’s willing to learn about racing, and maybe even get a little dirty.

Evelyn’s number-one goal is politics, which makes working with Gray difficult, because his only passion is fast cars. As she and Gray spend time together, he teaches her about the sport he loves, and she learns a lot about the man behind the wheel. The more she learns, the more she wants him. But any desire that threatens to derail the carefully laid plans for her future is a dangerous one.

With the passion Gray and Evelyn share running hotter than either imagined, one of them is going to have to compromise, or run the risk of losing more than their hearts.

There’s something about fast cars that just gets to me. There’s nothing like being at a race track and seeing it, breathing it in and feeling the excitement of the crowd.

It’s so thrilling to watch a driver push a car—and the drivers’ skill—to its limits, racing around a track at speeds in excess of 200 miles an hour. Never having hit those speeds myself in one of my own vehicles (dammit), I can only imagine the pure adrenaline rush, what it must feel like to be behind the wheel of a car and have the kind of power in your hands. That’s why I love watching NASCAR, love watching these cars race, knowing at any moment a crash could happen as they’re hurdling toward the finish line. It takes talent to manage a vehicle at those speeds, and I’m in awe of these drivers.

I’ve loved watching racing for a while now, and since I love writing the sports I enjoy, I just had to include auto racing in my Play by Play series. Until now, most of my heroes have been pull themselves up by their bootstraps type of characters. But Gray Preston is a different sort of hero, one of I’ve been eager to explore. Gray comes from family money, but he’s eschewed that money, mainly out of necessity when his father cut him off when he chose a different career path in college. And while he eventually did have access to the family money, he built his racing career from sweat equity, so he knows what it’s like to use muscle and hard work to forge a dynasty. But he hasn’t forgotten the lessons learned when your family turns their back on you. So when he meets Evelyn Hill, an aide to his senator father, he wants nothing to do with her request to assist in his father’s latest political campaign.

I really wanted to mesh the world of auto racing and politics, two things that absolutely don’t go together—kind of like whiskey and peanut butter. Gray and Evelyn clash from the first moment they meet. They’re different in so many ways, and yet so alike in their stubbornness and determination to win at all costs. Of course neither of them can see their similarities in the beginning, and the delicious chemistry between them causes all sorts of problems as they find a way to work together, despite Gray’s desperate need to be utterly uncooperative and Evelyn’s desire to climb her way to the top of the political sphere in Washington, even if the way to the top means learning everything there is to know about auto racing.

I hope you enjoy ONE SWEET RIDE, book 6 in my Play by Play series, available now.

I’m offering up either a digital or print copy of any of the other books in my Play by Play series for one commenter. Open to international entries, subject to geographical restrictions.
