Thanks for inviting me to be with you all today! I thought I’d talk to you all about the mysterious process of brainstorming the book cover for my second book, TRUE LOVE AT SILVER CREEK RANCH. You all know the covers for small town books—idyllic pictures of small towns and countryside. My series is set in Valentine Valley, a small mountain town outside Aspen, Colorado, which automatically lends itself to beautiful scenery. (Although that’s not why I chose Colorado. My son lives there, so I have somebody to turn to for research questions!) There was no question we’d use the mountains as a backdrop, just like we did in the first book, A TOWN CALLED VALENTINE. But we couldn’t show the Silver Creek Ranch buildings, because we’d already done that for the first cover. But there’s an old log cabin on the ranch, which has been renovated into a bunkhouse. Our hero, Adam Desantis, desperately needs a place to live…but let me back up.
Adam is an ex-Marine, who’s been adrift for a few months since he left the service. He’s fighting demons from the past, and isn’t all that anxious to return to Valentine Valley, where he grew up the bad boy from the trailer park outside town. But his Grandma Palmer, one of the ladies who lives in the Widows’ Boardinghouse, seems to be feeling poorly, and he comes back home to take care of her—or at least to figure out what’s wrong. He has no plans to stick around, but he finds himself going a little stir crazy living with the widows. Then the Thalbergs offer him a temporary job on the ranch, and the use of the bunkhouse/log cabin, which also lets him be closer to his boss, Brooke Thalberg. Though they’re the same age, they spent little time together back in school. She was too busy being a cowgirl, and he was too busy getting in trouble, until the football coach helped straighten him out. But this is the genesis of the log cabin on the front cover of TRUE LOVE AT SILVER CREEK RANCH. Needless to say, some fun and sexy scenes take place in that cabin…
You’ll notice the snow on the cover. The book is set in November and December, ending just before Christmas. I love snow on evergreens, don’t you? But the skating pond shaped like a heart was created because my editor happened to be reading my Facebook post where I discussed having just written a skating scene on a pond (I grew up figure skating.) She thought it would be perfect on the cover, and the art department came up with the idea to make it heart-shaped. Brilliant!
So there you have it, the creation of a book cover. So tell me your favorite book cover! Leave a response, and you might win a copy of the first book in the series, A TOWN CALLED VALENTINE.
I have to admit, I love the covers with half naked muscled men. Preferably with a tattoo and some kind of weapon.
Love the new cover. I like the cover to represent the story. No flowing blonde hair when the description in the book clearly states short dark hair. I.do love a hunky guy on the cover, but all the absence of chest hair makes me wonder, just when do the soldiers and vikings find time to wax? I haven’t been to Valentine yet, but I love small town stories.
This sounds good I love the cover too, I can’t wait to read it! Thanks
Penney
Oh, I’ve had a few of those covers, especially when I wrote medievals back in the day. Hunky guys!
Xaurianx, I’ve had a few of those half-naked muscle guys when I wrote medievals. 😉
Trish, sometimes hair color mistakes are made, though we try to avoid them. Once my hero had black hair, my heroine brown, and the art department reversed it–and even I didn’t notice until it was published! Then I cringed…Ha, love your waxing comment. You’re so right!
Glad I’ve intrigued you, Penney!
I love covers that are so bright or pretty that they get my attention walking by.
I’m with Xaurianx – I’m a fan of covers with hots guys on them, lol! I do like being able to place the book’s genre by what the cover looks like.
Gorgeous cover…I love historical romance covers they always have such vibrant colors and beautiful dresses that catch my eye
It’s amazing how well the art departments let us know exactly what kind of book it is by the cover!
I have to say I love the small town covers. The cover of this book is beautiful, I love it. Something with a scene on it really catches my eye. Would love to read your books.
book covers that depict the setting are lovely. Best wishes and much happiness and success.
I guess I have to say that I like a cover which conveys a hint of the story
to be found between the covers. It also should be striking enough to
catch the eye and the attention of the browsing reader.

Hi Quilt Lady! Glad you think the the art department did a good job! I was happy, too. Ellie, I have definitely been enjoying having landscape settings–it’s very different for me.
It is actually the book spine that gets me to look at books. Since most stores/libraries only show the spine. If it is bright flashy colors or a carry over picture from the cover.. you got me looking at the book and reading the back cover!
I do love a good book cover especially with guys looking like Greek Gods. My favourite book covers are from Christine Feehan. She is a genius with the most jaw dropping book covers
Robin, of course you’re right about the spine! Aniya, yep, Christine Feehan’s publisher really knows how to get her noticed!
I love the historical covers. The beautiful Colorado and the half baked men are always a draw to a book. 🙂
I love me some eye candy book covers 🙂
I do love beautiful covers. Women in long flowing robes & a Rake by their side or a vista to take your breath away.
Fav book covers… I love the variety out there… the sexy half naked men are wonderful to look at, but I do love a great scenescape… those beautiful pics that give you a sense of where the book takes place…
I love Jaci Burton’s The Perfect Play even though I’m not a big fan of football.

That is a lovely cover, Emma! I appreciate the covers that echo the mood of the story over all–I do love some eye candy as well, but I admit that the historicals where the hero’s half dressed, embracing the heroine whose gown is sliding off her shoulders kind of make me giggle! But I do like those back shots–here’s one that’s eyecatching, and I still remember it vividly:

Looking forward to catching up with your series!
I must admit that a goodlooking guy on the cover does get my attention 😀
But, I also love pretty scene’s of nature or houses and Christmassy covers like this one.
Deidre, I had to go look up Jaci’s cover. What a hunky guy! But I’m glad all of you like our small town covers, too!
I enjoyed your post and I like the lovely cover of your book. But, honestly, I’m not too much of a cover person and I don’t have a favorite.
I’m partial to covers showing the hero (not always half-naked but showing some muscles definitely) or the heroine with the hero…after all I am reading romance 😉
but I do like small town covers as well. I like to get a visual and idea of what the book is about (place or main characters)…I’m not much for the cartoonish covers.

I love that cover – makes me feel cozy to snuggle sown and read a story where someone else is coping with the snow. Small town stories always make me feel good when the people are good to each other.
