I’m here to day, to celebrate the release of my first contemporary romance, OFFSIDE. This is something new for me, as I’ve recently transitioned into writing contemporary romance. Some of you may know my paranormal romances, The Jaguar Warriors and now, The League of Guardians books.
When I first decided to try my hand at contemporary romances, I knew there would be some differences between the genres, but they were romances with an HEA, so how hard could that be? Well, I discovered not as easy as I’d imagined.
First off, paranormal romance (at least for my books) requires a good bit of world building. Your setting pretty much becomes a secondary character. In Wicked Road to Hell and the forth coming To Hell and Back, Hell, literally becomes a living breathing character. It’s way cool to write and helps add a more layers to the book. Because paranormal romances usually deal with life and death and very, unique and dangerous situations, the heroes are almost always, alpha, strong, in your face kind of men. If they’re like my jaguars, they grunt, they growl and the can be assholes some of the time.
Not so for a modern day contemporary hero. They can’t shape shift or drink blood, or use magic to win the day and the girl. These guys have to rely on inner strength as well as outer. And for me that was a challenge. I’d been used to writing these strong, alpha heroes who totally rocked the paranormal world they live in, but in our everyday life, they just didn’t work.
I found I had to work very hard to achieve a sort of balance. I wanted a guy who is strong, but not an asshole. A guy who would fight for me and bring me flowers the next day. A man who is able to please me in every single way that I can imagine, and one who has a few tricks up his sleeve that I’ve never experienced before.
I’ve got two new contemporary romance series coming out in the next little while and first up, OFFSIDE, a hockey romance in which, <ahem> the heroine is the hot shot hockey player! The love interest, Logan Forest is hot and I think I achieved the balance between alpha and asshole, quite nicely thank you very much.
When hockey phenom Billie-Jo Barker returns home and decides to play in the local Friday night hockey league, all hell breaks loose. Not because Billie’s talent is in question, but because Billie is a woman. And though these are modern times, some of the local guys still have a problem letting a girl into their ‘men’s club.’
Soon, Billie is at the center of a small town battle of the sexes, with everyone choosing sides. Her sisters. The townsfolk. Her friends. And yet, the only person whose opinion she cares about doesn’t seem to care much at all. Logan Forest, the man who broke her heart when she was eighteen and the man she now shares the bench with every Friday night.
She’s got a lot to prove and though Billie Jo Barker scores on the ice, will this girl ever score with the man of her dreams?
For your chance to win either a digital copy of OFFSIDE or an advanced reader copy of THE SUMMER HE CAME HOME, my new contemporary romance series that debuts next year with Sourcebooks, all you have to do is tell me who your favorite hero (in any genre) is and why.
Here’s a sneak peek at THE SUMMER HE CAME HOME (and the hero is a rock star!)
Sometimes the best place to find love is right back where you started…
Falling asleep in a different bed every night has made it easy for Cain Black to forget his past. It’s been ten years since he packed his guitar and left Crystal Lake to chase his dreams. Now tragedy has forced him home again. And though Cain relishes the freedom of the road, one stolen moment with Maggie O’Rourke makes him wonder if he’s missing out on something bigger than fame.
For Maggie—single mother and newly settled in Crystal Lake—love is a luxury she just can’t afford. Sure, she appreciates the tall, dark and handsome looks of prodigal son Cain Black. But how long can she expect the notorious hellion to stay?
The last thing either of them wants is something complicated. But sometimes love has its own plans.

Congratulations on the new contemporary series! One of my favorite heroes is St. Vincent from Devil in Winter by Lisa Kleypas because he takes a bullet meant for the heroine.
My newest to die for hero (I have too many to list) is Nev Chamberlain from Ruthie Knox’s About Last Night. He has everything I look for in my heros. And boy, does he know about to create the Big Moment.
Congrats on your new release and series. Love the idea of a woman on a guys team. One of my favorite is Lord Ian MacKenzie from Jennifer Ashley highland series.
Lately I’ve been enjoying Lou “Crush” Crushek from Shelly Laurenston’s Bear Meets Girl. He’s an alpha without being a jerk, which I like, plus he’s got a great sense of humor. Love it!
My fav hero is Roarke from the futuristic “Dallas” series from J.D. Robb. He has that charm, the kind of spirit that draws you in. He is damaged but you wouldnt know it when reading the first few books of the series but as you deleve into the books and read, the more you find out. He is a friend , he is someone that I wished was real, in life. I really love reading J.D. Robb’s books because I love reading the love story between Eve and Roarke
Wow, these are good! Someone mentioned Kleypas and I have to tell you all that Hardy Cates from Blue Eyed Devil is delicious. Love him. My personal all time fave hero, is Gabe from Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Dream a Little Dream. OMG, so tortured. So hot.
Congrats on the new release!! My favorite hero hmmm this is tough to many to choose from lol!! I really like Niol from Cynthia Eden’s Midnight’s Master he is a demon who’s only weakness is the women in his life weather it be his little sister or the love of his life. Plus with a stray thought he can create fire, destroy buildings, and make people spontaneously com-bust nothing like a bad boy with demon powers 😉

Juliana, big congrats to your news contemporary series. Wow it is hard to choose a favorite hero, because I have so many. I really love tortured heroes, who needs the special person to heal them. Like Zhadist from JR Ward’s Blackdagger Brotherhood series.
So many books I have read, so many heroes I enjoyed reading about, but the best of them all is Roarke, by JD Robb.
Tough choice, so many to choose from. I would have to say Johnnie Riggs from Kat Martin’s Against the Night. He is a protector, sexy, and a very alpha male. I love this series and the brothers and their friends.
Thanks for the giveaway….I would say my favorite is Acheron in Sherrilyn Kenyons Dark Hunter Series. We had read all her books to get to Acheron and is was such a wounded soul that took the love of a good woman to see that he was worthy…I love books like that 🙂
I have to say one of my favorite romance heroes is Roarke… Soooo sexy and giving…
But for sheer heartbreaking value– Zsadist wins from a tortured hero perspective…
Both men are sigh worthy and love their heroines completely and without reservation!!
My favorite hero is Zsadist in Ward’s BDB. He’s a tormented hero with a gruesome past, but in the end, he finds love, happiness and looks forward to a happy future. 😀
Fav hero… oh so many great ones out there… that is tough… but I am a big fan of Roarke from Robb’s In Death series… to see more and more of his character through the books in the series… to see his love for Eve help the two of them get through things from their pasts and things they deal with in the moment… oh and gotta love his hunky Irish self.
So many to love but the one that comes to mind now is Roarke from J. D. Robb’s In Death series. He is a hottie and loves Eve and is willing to die for her.
Roarke is always a good one. I do still have a certain fondness for Rhett Butler of GWTW. My favorite tortured hero is Christian, from Laura Kinsale’s Flowers from the Storm.
And I love the idea of a hockey player heroine!
If the Summer He Came home is a print copy, pls count me in. My favorite hero is Rome from Sarah’s Child. He is a conflicted and tortured soul and I love seeing the love of a good woman hero the heroine.
I like Zsadist from the BDB series because he’s caring and protective.
I just finished Wicked Road to Hell and thoroughly enjoyed Declan. I look forward to reading Offsides – I LOVE hockey
Congratulations on the new contemporary romances – they look great.
One of my all time favorite heroes is Roarke from the In Death series because not only is he mega rich, incredibly handsome and intelligent, he’s there for Eve regardless of what she needs -no matter what it is (legal or slightly not) he’ll do whatever it takes to support her. He loves her and would never betray her. Thanks for the giveaway!
Well, seems I need to read the In Death series. I love all these comments! And who mentioned Acheron? God that was a book I could not wait to get my hands on….
I love Edward from Twilight. I think he is hot and I love him because he does have a soul even though he may not think so.
My fav hero is Wrath from the BDB series because he has to not only lead a fearsome people, but also do it blindly… literally.
It would have to be a tie between Rammel Hawking and Engel Storm two of the members of B Company in the new (and by far the BEST) series The Order Of The Swan. You get to know both heroes In My Familiar Stranger Book One and The Witch’s Dream in Book Two. I truly grew to love both of the characters and look forward to more of them in the series.
Congrats on the new (and upcoming) release(s)!
I have to agree with everyone who’s mentioned Roarke from the ‘In Death’ series… that man is the perfect combination of hero traits: hot, rich, foreign, damaged, and willing to die for the woman he loves :).
Omg Nev (About Last Night)…
I agree with Karen. Nev from About Last Night. *sigh* He’s smart and sexy and a little geeky. Yum!
Whoa… yummy! I’m not sure I’ve got one favorite hero, but since I just reread Lord of Scoundrels, Dain is one of them! Congrats on your new and upcoming releases, Juliana!
For me a classic favorite is Linda Howard’s Wolf Mackenzie from Mackenzie’s Mountain. I also really love Zsadist and Vishous from the J.R. Ward’s series.
So hard to pick just one, but I love Blane Kirk in the Kathleen Turner series by Tiffany Snow! He’s so in control, protective and very alpha. He carries a bit of mystery around him and the times he aggrivates me and I want to hit him, he then turns around and not only knocks kathleen off her feet but then takes my breath away
Congrats on the new release! As for fabourite hero, it would always be Bones from the Night Huntress series for me as he is all kinds of sexy 🙂
