Thanks so much for inviting me to guest blog today!
Two things to talk about: 1) My new release Mate Claimed and 2) a question I get asked a lot: “Why do you write so many genres?” Well, I’ll tell you. 🙂
First, Mate Claimed, Book 4 in the Shifters Unbound series is out!
If you’re new to the Shifter series, Shifters Unbound is a paranormal romance series about shape-shifters who have revealed themselves to the world, only to be rounded up and made to live in Shiftertowns and wear shock collars to control their violence. Or so humans think. The Shifters know who’s really in charge.
In Mate Claimed, Eric Warden, the leader of his Shiftertown must round up half-Shifter half-human Iona who’s been passing for human all her life. She’s resistant, not wanting to reveal her Shifter side to the world, but her Shifter instincts are making her crazy, and Eric fears she’ll go feral if he doesn’t bring her in. Iona want wants to resist him, fearing repercussions against her family for hiding the fact that she’s Shifter, but her mating hunger is high, and she can’t ignore Eric’s call.
This is a hot book, and I had a blast writing it.
Second: I write several genres—romance, mystery, fantasy—and several subgenres within romance: paranormal, historical, futuristic, erotic.
I get asked why?. To me, writing the same thing all the time would quickly grow tiresome, and the books would reflect that. Either I have ADD, or I love to explore different sides of my imagination.
I currently am working on five series (and have several backlist series too)
1. Shifters Unbound—Paranormal / Shapeshifter romance
I enjoy writing shapeshifters, because I like exploring what life is like as a shapeshifter. These guys are big, hot, and sexy, and yet vulnerable to the rules that try to control them.
I love writing about the Shifter families and clans and dynamics within the families and the Shifter society. I have two groups of Shifters going—the Austin Shifters, led by the Morrisseys, and the Las Vegas Shifters, led by Eric and his family. I go back and forth as I write the main novels and shorter tie-in novels.
New Release: Hard Mated (August 2012), and Mate Claimed (October 2012)
2. Mackenzies—Historical / Scottish / Victorian
Who doesn’t love a sexy man in a kilt? The Mackenzies series revolves around a highly dysfunctional family of Scottish brothers, their ups and downs, triumphs and tragedies.
My Scottish series is a little different because it’s set in the Victorian age, not the age of clan wars. The Scottish men fall in love with women who wear lush bustle dresses of the late Victorian era, and are into photography, horseracing, and that new, fascinating invention, the motorcar.
The Mackenzie men are rich, decadent, and fiercely Scottish, wearing their kilts everywhere and not bothering to hide their Highland accents.
I love the research into the late Victorian age, which wasn’t much different from our own, and into Scottish history after Culloden.
Next release: The Seduction of Elliot McBride (January 1, 2012)
3. Stormwalker – Urban Fantasy w/ some romance
The Stormwalker series, which I write as Allyson James, is contemporary fantasy set in rural Arizona, in and around the Navajo Nation.
Half-Navajo Janet Begay is a Stormwalker—meaning she can gather the forces of storms that sweep across the desert and channel them to make amazing magic.
She has a boyfriend, Mick, a biker and a shape-shifter, who aids her on her adventures and helps her ease back down from her wild storm magic in the sexiest way possible.
I love writing this series, which is set in my own backyard, the deserts of the southwest. I incorporate some Navajo and Hopi legend into the stories, and include Coyote, the trickster god, who is a handful.
I also wanted to write an ongoing couple who are a couple—not a “will they or won’t they?” or “will she choose him or him?” kind of story. I wanted a couple who have been through their ups and downs (and still going through some), but who have a solid relationship that’s not going to be torn apart, despite anyone’s best efforts.
The series is ongoing, following Janet and Mick in their adventures. There is fast-paced action adventure, and a continuing romance arc with Janet and Mick.
Latest release: Nightwalker (September 2012)
4. Tales of the Shareem – Erotic / Futuristic romance / Extremely hot!
The Shareem are men genetically engineered for one purpose—to pleasure women. They were invented on a planet (Bor Narga) on which sex is now taboo—children are created outside the body, and men and women aspire to pursue intellectual and artistic pursuits rather than emotional and bodily pleasures.
The Shareem had been created before this culture change, and now they’re more or less outlawed, allowed to live only if they get inoculated against all sexual diseases and conceiving children.
Does that slow down our heroes? No! They are a group of sexy, fun-loving guys who find ways to fulfill their (and their lucky lady’s) bodily pleasures, while dodging the patrollers, who don’t want to let them have any fun.
But underneath it all, they’re looking for love and that special lady who will love them for themselves.
I love these guys. In this series, there are no inhibitions—the sex is hot stuff. When I say erotic, I mean it! And Rees, Rio, Aiden, Ky, Calder, Braden, Justin, and others to come, are sweethearts. 🙂
The latest release is Tales of the Shareem: Justin, which I pubbed myself, but the backlist is all available from Ellora’s Cave and via Amazon, B&N, and All Romance Ebooks.
5. Captain Lacey Regency mysteries – Mystery / Regency-set / some romance
Ah, Captain Lacey. I started writing his books more than ten years ago. He’s a burned-out, injured cavalry officer from the Napoleonic War, whose gentleman father lost every penny, leaving Gabriel Lacey with a rundown house in Norfolk and nothing more.
Lacey returns to London and stumbles across a crime—the disappearance of a respectable young woman. That case draws him into the world of crime-solving, where he crosses paths with the wealthiest dandy in London (Lucius Grenville), a man who rules the criminal underworld (James Denis), an enthusiastic Bow Street Runner (Pomeroy), a viscountess with an acerbic tongue (Lady Breckenridge), and many others.
Using only his wits, Lacey battles the criminals of London and outsmarts them when he can. There is also an ongoing romantic arc with Lady Breckenridge.
I love this series! Captain Lacey is like my best friend. Also, I enjoy researching and writing about criminal investigation long before fingerprinting, DNA testing, or any modern forensics. Evidence gathering was very basic.
This is not a lighthearted, frothy Regency series, but a look at both sides of the Regency, from the ballrooms to the backstreets.
The latest release is A Death in Norfolk. I’m working on more, and the entire backlist, plus shorter offerings can be found at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Apple, Sony, Kobo, and Smashwords.
So that’s what I write! Each series lets me explore a different facet of the world, of history, of my imagination. (It also explains why I’m so busy.)
I hope I can offer something for everyone.
Now for the giveaway. A backlist book from any of my series! Winner’s choice. Leave a comment to tell me what is your favorite reading genre.
Best,
Jennifer Ashley

My favorite is historical romance. I just love the scottish historicals and look forward to reading The Seduction of Elliot McBride !
Hi Jennifer, thanks for the fun post! I must admit, I love all your books and have read most of them (except the erotic ones) and I still need to read your pirates. And I love your dragons series as well!
To anyone reading this, I do recommend them all. Jennifer Ashley/Allyson James is an amazing author. Very hard to pick a favourite, it is a tie between the historicals and the paranormals for me.
I would say PNR is basically my favorite but I’m proud to say I have read every series you names with the exception of the mystery. I’m a huge fan and you have helped me branch out in genres 😉
The Mackenzie series is one of my favorite series. I love, LOVE The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie. He’s such a unique hero.
My favorite genre would be historical romance. I love your MacKenzie series and I’m looking forward to Elliot’s story. Knew about your paranormal but not your other series. Good to know.
It always amazes me how authors can keep so many balls juggling in the air and keep everything straight. It can’t be easy to write in so many different genres/sub-genres at one time. I’ve read some of your historical romances and only recently discovered your Captain Lacey series. I have enjoyed what I’ve read so far and look forward to more hours of entertaining reading.
At the moment I seem to be reading a lot more UF than anything else, but I really enjoy a lot of genres of romance (PNR, Historical, Contemporary). Romantic Suspense is about the only one I don’t read often (I’m a wimp).
My favorite reading genre is romance with many sub-genres after that – I read historical, fantasy, paranormal, sci-fi, romantic suspense – pretty much anything as romance is involved. I draw the line at non-fiction (I can watch the news for that!) and horror. I love the Shifters Unbound series!
Thanks for the giveaway
At least the voices in your head have somewhere to go and something to say. It’s great that you have such an active imagination. I love the Mackenzie series.
I enjoy romantic suspense and historicals. Your series sounds wonderful.
Hi
I read all types of genres so my favorite would be whatever fun book I am currently reading, right now it is Jillian Stone’s An Affair with Mr Kennedy. It is kind of a historical romance with intrigue and suspense. Fun book.
I have enjoyed both your Shifters series and The Mackenzie’s and I am looking forward to reading more.
Thanks
Pam
My favorite reading genre is paranormal romance. I do throw in some suspense now and then like Joan Swan or some Stephanie Tyler. Thank you so much.

Thanks for the interesting post. My favorite genre are historicals romances. I just recently discovered your Mackenzie series and am enjoying them. I also purchased the first book in your mystery series, but haven’t had a chance to read it yet.

My favorite reading genre is paranormal romance. I love YA also. Thanks for the giveaway. Please enter me. Would love to read your books.
My favorite genre is… anything with romance. I like to read different genres (suspense, paranormal, historical) because when I read too much of one genre in a row I get a little bored. It all starts to blur and becomes one pile of events/charachters/etc. I like a little variation in my reading.
I love both historical fiction and erotic romance, put the two together and I’m in heaven! I recently read a historical/erotic/paranormal romance, that was fun too 😉
My favourite genres are historical and contemporary. I love your historicals especially and I can’t wait for Elliot’s story!
Regency too? That I did not know.
My fav genres..hm, i will go with fantasy and urban fantasy 🙂
My favorite is ANYTHING YOU WRITE :-). I am your biggest fan and are working to collect all of it. My first love is Highlanders of any historical period (as long as they wear kilts and have their burrs), then pirates, paranormal-shifters and of course dragons. I was sorry to see the end of the Dragon Series and your Pirates hoped off the page. They were the first of your books I read. By the way I just finished MATE CLAIMED and it was worth the wait but then again so was HARD MATED. I can’t wait for Elliot’s book, he’s been waiting for so long, lol.
Thank you so much for all your effort writing and willingness to share your creative imagination with us!
Love love love all of the genres in romance… something for whatever I am craving at the time… lately it has been paranormal & suspense, but I do enjoy the variety.
I started out many years ago only reading historical romance but now I read PNR, suspense, and contemporary romances! I don’t have a fav. I love em all!
I don’t really have a favourite. Sometimes I might want to read something, other times I avoid it. I don’t like to read similar books too close together.
I don’t have a favorite genre. As long as the story hooks me, I will read it. *grin* Usually though, the story has to have romance for me to really enjoy it.
My favorite is paranormal romance
Love the interview. It’s interesting how one author can write so many different types of series and always be fresh each time a book is released. My favorite genre is paranormal romance. I do read so urban fantasy.
Thanks for the giveaway,

I don’t have a favorite. I like to plan out my reading so I never read two books from the same genre at the same time or back to back. In fact, I like to spread out me reading so I have two or three books between books in the same genre. It’s a tricky, tricky thing!
I have loved your Captain Lacey books! I started with the last one then went back and read all of them from the beginning. I did not know until this book came out that you wrote in other genres. Just proves I need to research more on my favorite authors!
I can’t say that I have only one favorite, Jennifer, so I love when authors don’t write just one genre 😉 That way I can indulge myself no matter what I’m in the mood to read! Historical and paranormal are two of my current faves!
I like UF and romance (both historical, contemp, and PNR). I don’t really have a favorite, I just switch back and forth between them. I’ve read lots of your books, and the one thing I know I can count on is that I will get a good story and a hot romance, regardless of the genre.
I love all Romance but my favorite is PNR. Great contest with one of my favorite authors.
My favorite genre is still PNR but I read most romance.
Historicals, paranormals and UF equal favorites for me, can’t get enough, so it’s great you write them all. Glad to see more Captain Lacey stories, love Mick and Janet.
Paranormal is my absolute favorite .Love your books Jennifer just finished Hard Mated and loved every page of it I couldnt put it down.
I love a lot of different genres, but my top favorites are historical and paranormal romance. I think it’s awesome that you have a lot of interests and write in different genres. I think it’s a great way to make life interesting and gives me lots of choices in what to read. 😀

Hi Jennifer!
I love the variety of genres you write so that I can “pick” a book to read depending on my mood at the time but I must admit my two favorite genres are historical, both Scotish or Victorian, and Mystery, both Romance and Regency!
My husband blames it on my mix of English and Scotish heritage. Of course I than have to remind him of his love of reading stories about Julius Caesar (he’s Italian after all!). Of course he also includes books that take his “Roman” ancestors to Scotland which helped me to convince him a trip to Scotland wasn’t a pleasure but a necessity! Anyone who has the pleasure of visiting Scotland will wish they were Scotish, whether they are or not!
Of course men wearing kilts are someone no female should miss so feel free to walk the moors once again and take us back to the Highlands whether with a mystery or a love story because the call of Scotch whiskey and handsome heros are calling!
My favorite genre is paranormals, but I read a lot of different genres. To keep from getting burnt out on any one genre.
I like paranormals.
MacKenzie’s are my favorite and wow I see a few other of your series I must find. Any chance you will write more in the series with The Mad Bad Duke, I think it’s your Nvengarian series…I love that one too. Say hello to Minion.
Z
I like all different genres but I think historicals are my favorite.
I read in every genre but the one I pick up the most is paranormal romance
This is great that you write several genre cause I like the variety, it depends on my mood wether I’ll pick up Historical, Paranormal, Contemporary, Suspense.
