Challenge: The quality of requiring full use of one’s abilities, energy, or resources

I didn’t dream of being a writer at a young age, in fact writing was issued as more of a challenge after I had become an adult. I’d been interested in writing for a number of years but gravitated more toward nonfiction.  My mother said one day, “As much as you read romance you need to try writing it.” As if it is just that easy. Still the statement remained a mustard seed of an idea in the back of my mind for years as I work on my nonfiction projects.

When I first joined my weekly critique group I was asked what I was writing. I went through the list of books I had in mind and finished with, “and I think I would like to write romance also.” I was told very nicely that few people are able to do both. There was another challenge. I had to try.

I came by the way of writing medical romances in about the same way as I did the general idea of writing romance. A friend had just attended a writing conference and said, “Mills and Boon are looking for authors for their medical line. You ought to try that.” Not exactly a challenge, but close enough.

It took a number of years of submitting, rejections, rewrites, and revisions for me to find success. To meet the challenge. It hasn’t always been easy.  Really, it has been a lot of hard work. Finally the challenge my mother issued long ago has come to fruition. Heart Surgeon, Hero…Husband? is now out in the world.
