Hello! I want to thank Fatin for having me on the blog and allowing me to share my character interview with Callum Lennon. For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Melissa Schroeder and I write in genres from historical to futuristic and in heat levels from sensual to erotic. I am best known for my Harmless series but I am branching out this year and writing a couple of paranormal series, one being The Cursed Clan.

If you want to find me around the web, here is the info:

Our hero is a brooding sort, who lives in Edinburgh complete with a kilt (and yes, he wears it in the story). I met with him via Skype because well, hubby wasn’t really happy with the idea that I hit Scotland by myself with four very sexy highlanders.

Callum looks to be a man in his mid to late thirties, short black hair and with the most gorgeous blue eyes. He is in charge of Lennon Enterprises, a vast company that he and his cousins control.

MEL: Thanks so much for taking the time to chat with me via Skype. I understand that you had to get up extra early to talk.

CALLUM: No problem, lass. I believe in getting an early start to the day.

MEL: Your company is huge so I can understand that you would have to stay on top of things.

CALLUM: It helps if you can delegate, and it also helps having people you can trust.

MEL: Yes, you run the company with your cousins.

CALLUM: Yes. I am the CEO. Angus is in charge of everything technical. Logan is an artist at heart, so he handles out advertising while Anice handles out publicity. Fletcher handles our security.

FLETCHER from off the screen: Did I hear my name?

He pokes his head in front of Callum. Another gorgeous Lennon. His hair is light brown and his had green eyes. Add the Matthew McConaughey smile, and he is deadly to a girl’s composure.

MEL: Good Morning, Fletcher.

His smile widens.

FLETCHER: I would say it is good evening for you, love. When Callum told me he was going to talk to you, I was saddened that it was only going to be over the computer.

MEL: I have a trip to Hawaii next week, so I can’t make it to Scotland.

FLETCHER: Hawaii? Tell me what island, and I’ll be happy to join you.

CALLUM: Shoves his cousin out of the way. That’s enough of that.

FLETCHER: On my way. Give me a ring, love.

CALLUM: Rolls his eyes. Working with the family can be a blessing and a curse.

MEL: So, tell me about Phoebe.

CALLUM: He smiles and his entire demeanor changes. Phoebe came to work for us a few months ago.

MEL: Love at first sight.

CALLUM: Laughes. No.  First, she is English, so she already had a strike against her. We argued the first time we met, but I forgave her.

From off screen.

PHOEBE: Likely story.

CALLUM: You know I did, love. Of course, it didn’t happen overnight.

Phoebe comes onscreen and Callum pulled her onto his lap. Her long red hair is pulled up tightly behind her head and she is already dressed for work in a wool suit.

PHOEBE: Callum tends to forget that he didn’t really trust me for a good long while.

CALLUM: But I have seen the errors of my ways. He nuzzles her cheek and gives her a kiss. Now, if I could convince her to marry me, we would be happy all around.

PHOEBE: Rolls her light green eyes. Not until we solve the entire curse. Which, I might remind you, we need to work on today, so hurry up. Bye, Melissa. She gives him a kiss then pops up out of his lap. I am going to have a spot of tea and then we will get to work.

Her footsteps recede and Callum offers me a smile.

CALLUM: I must do what Phoebe wants, so I’ll have to  let you go.

MEL: Thanks for taking the time to talk to me. Good luck convincing Phoebe to marry you.

CALLUM: I need all the help I can get, so I thank you. Goodbye, Melissa.

MEL: Goodbye.

Callum’s story is on preorder now at ARe and will be available next week everywhere. Here is a little blurb:

As Laird, Callum Lennon feels he has always failed to protect his cousins. Callum’s impulsiveness caused the death of his father and the experience has scarred not only his body, but his soul. From that point on, he made sure to always go with the more logical choice in every matter. When his younger cousin Angus finds clues that might help break the curse, Callum begrudgingly hires Phoebe Chilton to investigate. Callum doesn’t like bringing outsiders into their family affairs. Their life would become fodder for the tabloids if anyone were to find out about the curse. It doesn’t help that the instant he meets Dr. Chilton he’s attracted. But, he doesn’t really have a choice because she might be their last hope.

An expert in archeology, Phoebe has always been dwarfed by her parents’ shadow. Their high standards had her in college by thirteen and earning a second PhD by twenty-two. But her career and her broken marriage have left her needing something more than just diplomas and degrees. She wants to prove that her interest in legends, especially Celtic legends, is as important as her parents’ work. When the Lennon family contacts her, she sees the opportunity to win a massive research grant. With a long-time rival breathing down her back, she jumps at the Lennons’ offer her, hoping it will ensure her the grant. But uncovering the Lennon family secrets, and her attraction to Callum, could prove more than she can handle.

Forces outside the family are determined to ensure that they fail. When an old enemy threatens both the well being of the clan and the fragile new love, Callum will have to choose between believing his mind or his heart.

Now for what you can win on RR@H Novel Thoughts. It’s so hard to decide but I went with the following books. One winner for each book for a total of 4 winners.

Devil Riders Series, Book #5

Eight years ago, Lieutenant Luke Ripton made a hasty wartime marriage to protect a young girl from a forced union. Now, unable to obtain an annulment, Luke has no choice but to collect Isabella, the fiercely independent wife he never wanted.

And while they remain bound to their vows, they never expected that the passionate fury they share could become passion of a different kind…

Kowalski Family Book #2

One-night stand + two percent condom failure rate = happily ever after?

Bar owner Kevin Kowalski is used to women throwing their phone numbers at him, but lately he’s more interested in finding a woman to settle down with. A woman like Beth Hansen. If only their first meeting hadn’t gone so badly…

Beth’s tending bar at a wedding when she comes face-to-face with a tuxedo-clad man she never thought she’d see again. She tries to keep her distance from Kevin but, by last call, she can’t say no to his too-blue eyes or the invitation back to his room. Then she slips out before breakfast without leaving a note and, despite their precautions, pregnant.

Kevin quickly warms to the idea of being a dad and to seeing where things go with Beth. After all, he’s not the player she thinks he is. But she’s not ready for a relationship and, given his reputation, it’s going to take a lot to convince her to go on a second date with the father of her child…

Midnight Breed, Book #10

In the dark of night, a blood war escalates within the hidden world of the Breed. After existing in secret for many long centuries, maintaining a fragile peace with the humans who walk beside them unaware, a single act of retaliation has put the entire vampire nation at risk of discovery. It falls to the Order—a cadre of Breed warriors pledged to protect their own and humankind alike—to stop Dragos, the power-mad vampire at the center of the conflict, before his push for domination can explode into catastrophe.

At the center of the Order’s quest is Sterling Chase, once a morally rigid enforcer of Breed law, now a warrior fallen from grace, whose biggest battle is the one he wages against his own savage nature. With addiction beckoning him toward eternal darkness, Chase’s path to redemption has never seemed more out of reach. But when his eyes meet those of Tavia Fairchild, a beautiful witness who identifies him at the scene of a mission gone terribly wrong, Chase finds himself drawn to the woman—and convinced she is something much more than she seems.

Pulled into a vortex of intrigue and danger she can neither resist nor understand, Tavia is uncertain whom to trust. And while everything sane and logical warns her against getting close to Chase, she cannot deny that the handsome, deeply haunted male stirs something primal and ravenous within her. But even as she surrenders to her cravings, nothing can prepare her for the shattering truth of who—and what—she truly is.

As the Order’s enemy mobilizes for the battle of the ages, Dragos and his Minions unleashing a hell on Earth like nothing ever seen before, Chase and Tavia are thrust into the heart of the violence. With time running out and the streets running red with the blood of innocent lives, both Breed and human, together Chase and Tavia must find a way to defeat Dragos once and for all—or die trying

Ash Trilogy, Book #2

Hope Carson may not look like a survivor, but she has escaped an abusive ex-husband and recovered from a vicious assault. Now she endures the painful memories and suspicious rumors surrounding her involvement in the attack. Her ex is a cop, so the last people she trusts are law enforcement officials—and she certainly doesn’t trust how the local DA makes her feel inside.

Remy Jennings should know better. He has no business falling for a woman who he suspects may have a deeply troubled mind. And even if he did make a move, she’d bolt like a frightened rabbit. But how can he deny a burning desire that threatens to consume him? As Hope’s past catches up with her in the worst way, Remy is determined to break through her defenses, earn her trust, and keep her safe in his arms—before it’s too late.

To be in the running, just let me know which book you’d like to win and what you’re currently reading. Easy peasy! 😉

Winners will be announced on February 1st and Giveaway is open to all! Good luck!

Jodie: I’ve always been an avid reader of romance. In fact when I think of it, all the books that I liked outside the romance genre had to have romance as an element. It kept me interested. Soon my shelves were overflowing with romance books. In the 90s it was all historicals for me. I read them through the night and couldn’t get enough of them. Soon it wasn’t enough, in order to get to sleep at night I was thinking up stories, and without fail I would fall asleep just before they’d consummate their love for each other :p. One day, I was talking to my sister about a story I was imagining up and we were having a good giggle about it. In the end, she told me that I should write it. And I did. That happened to be a historical, of course, about a Marquis who, in order to avoid matrimony makes up a fake fiancée to keep the marriage minded mamas at bay. But his plan is foiled when his mother searches out this infamous Miss Hinglebottom and finds her to be real (much to the dismay of the Marquis). What about you, Sid? What made you write romance and what was your first story about?

Sidney: I did it as a dare. Seriously. I hadn’t been reading romance long, and though I read some books that I really loved, there were others that frustrated me with heroines who were stupid and plots that went nowhere. I was writing, but wasn’t having any success with my books. So I took a challenge to write romance, and a few months later I sold it. Between the time I wrote the first one and it sold, I’d already jumped on the band wagon and written a few more, and now here I am. Not only do I proudly read romance, I write it too. It’s not the typical story of how one becomes a romance writer, but I think the precedent in my life is I do nothing the normal way! Looking back, I can see the impact that romance and relationships played in my early writing. I’ve always been a fan of the more emotional arcs, but I need some action or reason to keep my pages turning.

Jodie: Talking about emotional arcs, it is a complex balance of character development, emotional upheaval and action/plot to keep the reader interested. That’s the hard part of writing. We’re not sitting at our laptops, eating bon bons and thinking of glorious and different ways to describe a woman’s va-jayay… okay, well sometimes we are *grins*. Minus the bonbons. I’m more of a white chocolate lover. Anyway, writing my first romance it just poured out of me. It was done and then I realized, I didn’t know the first thing about sending it to publishers and promptly joined a writer’s group. It was there I discovered that I was the adverb Queen and I wrote in a hue that distinctly looked purple. Very purple. It wasn’t so easy as writing it out and ta-dah, a story is complete. That’s the fun bit. The work comes in editing and sending it all out there. What about you, Sid, what did you discover about writing?

Sidney: Things dangle in my writing. Unfortunately I’m not talking about sexy dangly bits. I’m talking about my horrible grammar habits. My critique partners chalked my tendency to use odd dangling modifiers as style. My editor has corrected me and I’ve been making a concentrated effort to not do that, but it still happens sometimes. The first time I wrote sexy bits, I didn’t want to use any of the typical romance words for actions, body parts or cluing in phrases. I wanted to make up my own terminology. It failed. Like, laughing stock, please nominate me for Worst Sex Scene of the Year. I believe I described a woman’s lady bits as being the automatic sliding doors. Yeah, so not flattering. Since then I’ve admitted that my word revolution probably isn’t going to catch on, and the stock words really aren’t that bad. I’m rather fond of many of them now. Jodie, do you have any favorite words you’d like to share with the class? ;D

Jodie: LOL Automatic sliding door vagina. And that’s why I dig you! Gosh, my fave purple prose? I can’t remember, I’d have to delve back a few years before I was caught in it. My editor did pick up a couple though, so I’m not out of the woods yet. But, I did notice I have an issue with bedroom choreography.  Yes, I did say that. My characters at time almost seem flexible with four hands and the ability to float in the air. (>.>)  For me, as a writer and reader, writing has become my way to reduce my book bill. I learned very quickly that writing isn’t for everyone and it requires perseverance. I’ve been picked up, chewed up and spat out and my ego (yes I do have one, it likes custard tarts), takes a beating every now and again. But I’m sill here, writing with a passion because I can’t see myself not doing it. If I don’t write or read I’m a grumpy gal and my husband knows to steer clear! LOL Oh yeah. The stories we might love and wrote without hearts might never find its way into the hands of an editor, but we write it because we love a good story. We put what we like in our stories. What appeals to us and hope that other people like it too. Sid, why are you a writer?

Sidney: I write because it makes me happy. The things I write are what I want to read. I’ve always thought up stories from every day things, from the larger than life adventures I wanted to have and through writing I can have it all, and my comfortable, everyday life. Everyone starts writing for their own reasons, a story that burns in their soul, wanting to live the author life, their love of books, a dare, there is no wrong answer, but there’s a story in all of us. Some of us just like to tell more than one of them. And we become writers!

Thanks to the ladies of Romance Reader at Heart for having us here today! We would like to give away a set of BizzyBetty fudge bonbons to one commenter. Tell us your favorite romance novel or a book you wish someone would write.

Jodie Becker

I believe in love and redemption. I really do. And that’s probably why I write romance. Sure, I tried my hand at epic fantasy and literary pieces, but you know, my passion remained with romance. My *virtual* bookshelf is overflowing with them. With so many sub-genres I can go anywhere and I do! So it’s no surprise that I find myself comfortable here.

I’ll write anything that tickles my fancy, from the sassy contemporary all the way to the dark urban fantasy. As long as there is romance, I’m a happy camper.

Thanks so much to Fatin and Novel Thoughts for inviting me to stop by today!

I’m probably what most romance fans would consider a “late bloomer” when it comes to the genre. As a kid I always loved to read, but I leaned more toward mystery/suspense and adventure stories rather than romance. It wasn’t until I was in college and my boyfriend (now hubby) gave me a copy of SCARLETT: The Sequel to Margaret Mitchell’s Gone With the Wind for Christmas that things changed for me. Of course, who didn’t love the original GONE WITH THE WIND? I did, but I never considered it a romance. For me it was always just an epically tragic story about the fall of the old South. I loved that book. I’d always wished there was more. And I knew if there was a sequel—written by anyone—I wanted to read it. So when Alexandra Ripley wrote one, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it.

Fast forward a week. My boyfriend (now hubby) vowed to never buy me another book so long as we were together because I neglected everything—including him—to finish that story. If you’ve ever seen the book, you know why he was upset. It’s huge. And I very definitely DID neglect him while I finished it. (The irony that his wife became a writer isn’t lost on him.) Those of you who have read SCARLETT have your own opinion of the story and whether it lived up to the classic original, so I won’t get into that. But I will say while it is not my favorite book—in fact, I never read it again—it was a pivotal read for me because it pushed me toward more happily ever after stories. Suddenly I was reading authors like Judith McNaught and LaVyrle Spencer and Elizabeth Lowell. And looking back I know I have SCARLETT to thank for steering me in the direction of romance, because before that book, I didn’t even know the genre existed.

While my reading habits did change from that moment forward, my love for adventure and suspense and mystery lived on. Today, most of the romances I read (and all of the ones that I write) incorporate some element of either adventure or mystery/suspense (sometimes both). Whether it’s my Eternal Guardians series (paranormal adventure and suspense) or my romantic suspense books, I’ve taken the elements I love and mixed them with the romances I fell in love with back in college.  The cool thing about the romance genre is that no matter what you like to read—fantasy, westerns, thrillers, sci-fi—you can find them within the romance genre. You can have your happily ever after AND all those elements you’ve grown to love.

Is there a book you remember reading that turned you on to the romance genre? If so, what was it? If not, what got you started reading romance? I’m giving away a copy of my latest release, WAIT FOR ME, is a contemporary romantic suspense, to one lucky commenter today!

A woman without a past…

After a tragic accident left her with no memory, Kate Alexander struggled to fit in with a husband and world that didn’t feel right. She’s had no reason to question what friends and family have told her, not until her husband is suddenly killed and she finds a photo of a young girl in his office. A girl who can’t be anyone but a daughter Kate didn’t know she had.

A man desperate for a reason to live…

Ryan Harrison lost his wife in a plane crash five years ago. To cope with the pain of her loss, he dedicated himself to his job and to raising their daughter. Now a successful pharmaceutical executive, Ryan has everything a man could want—money, fame and power—but he’d give it all up in a heartbeat for just one more day with the woman he still loves.

Two lives about to converge.

As Kate begins to dig into a past she doesn’t remember, evidence leads her to San Francisco and puts her on the path toward Ryan, a man who sees in her the woman he loved and lost. Kate feels a draw to Ryan, one she can’t explain, but is that feeling enough to convince her this is where she’s supposed to be? As Ryan and Kate search for answers, they uncover lies long buried, a passion hotter than either expected and a danger that threatens…even now…when the second chance they’ve both been searching for is finally within reach.

“Full of twists and turns, lies and deception, and the ultimate revenge, WAIT FOR ME is a great romantic suspense read.”

And another one! This one comes out in September and goes with LAID BARE.

From Lauren’s blog —

This is a digital only novella that’ll be out in September!

All she needed to pack was a few bikinis, a toothbrush and some sunscreen. This is what Ben told Erin when he presented her and Todd with tickets to Fiji and the promise of ten days of nothing but sleeping until whenever they wanted, sex without having to lock the door and lots of alone time.

And that’s what they have. Long days and nights filled with pleasure. Long enough that the stress and exhaustion drops away and the three can simply enjoy each other.

They’ve got heat. More than ever before. Recharging their batteries has also brought new levels of intimacy and connection. But when Erin stumbles over the pain of her past, both men band together to not only help her through, but to help each other as well.
