A deadly mission.
A thirst for revenge.
One headstrong alpha hero
and one daring woman will
settle the score.
Special operative Joe Green has gone vigilante. His mission, avenge his Black Ops.,Inc. brother’s death during a bloody ambush years ago in Sierra Leone. He refuses to drag the BOI team or his lover, Stephanie Tompkins, into the hunt for the man responsible, so when he finds himself beaten, starving, and alone after being falsely imprisoned for the murder of a Freetown priest, he knows he’s as good as dead.
Joe meant to protect Stephanie when he walked out on their relationship, but he can’t stop her now from executing his escape. Breaking him out of prison is the easy part. After Joe’s explosive theory pans out and his cunning enemy emerges as the front runner for a high level presidential appointment, he and Stephanie must race to derail the traitor’s conspiracy if they are to save their loved ones, the nation and each other.

I’m always being asked about my first sale so I thought I’d share the story with you at Novel thoughts today.
My first sale story probably mirrors a lot of authors. The truth is, it falls into the ‘if I knew then what I know now’ category, I probably wouldn’t be published. I was so naïve. Such a baby – rhetorically speaking – and so ignorant of the business. Long story short, I was in love with LaVryle Spencer’s work – who among us doesn’t love and miss LaVyrle?? Anyway, I’d exhausted her complete library – or so I thought until I discovered there were some older titles that I’d missed. When I couldn’t get a hold of them, I wrote to her. That was before the days of e-mail AND e-books (yes, Virginia, there is a pre-web era many of us survived, but just barely). But I digress. She wrote back. Told me she wrote to me personally because my letter was so articulate. In my mind that equated to: “LaVryle Spencer thinks I’m articulate. I bet I could write a book.”
You laugh but that’s just how it all started. I sat down with a portable manual typewriter with a sticky E and set out to write the great American novel. From that moment on I was a gonner. Bitten bad by the writing bug. That manuscript was rejected by the best editors in the business (many of whom I enjoy seeing at RWA nationals these days) but the rejection letters were very encouraging so I kept at it. I wrote two more books. Farmed them all over NYC and finally got the call one pretty fall afternoon from an editor with Bantam Doubleday Dell’s now defunct Loveswept line. My hubby was helping a farmer friend of his in the field so I was home alone. I was screaming and buzzed with excitement so I hopped in the car, drove out to the farm, bounced across a fall plowed field or two until I found Tom behind the wheel of a HUGE combine picking corn. He saw me coming, jumped out of the cab and ran to the car. “Who died?” he asked frantically. In his mind, nothing else warranted the beating my poor car was taking.
We still laugh about that day but MAVERICK was my very first title and came out in July of 1991. Now, wow, 20 years and 46 books later, I still get a little tickle of excitement when I think about that first sale.
And speaking of sales 🙂 LAST MAN STANDING, my January 31, 2012 release will be on the shelves tomorrow! LMS is the 7th and final book of my Black Ops Inc series and while I’m sad to see the series end, I’m so excited that I got to tell this story that features Joe Green, a strong, enigmatic alpha male, but even better, it features the most transformative heroine I’ve ever written. Stephanie Tompkins has always wanted to be something she wasn’t. Had never had the courage to pursue her dreams but then a set of circumstances force her to become the woman she had always hoped she could be. Here’s a little snippet of Stephanie’s journey to her true self.
…Talk about defining moments. Talk about revelations. Now that she had a moment to take a deep breath, sit back and assess, she was seeing herself in a whole new light – both literally and figuratively when she caught a glimpse of her reflection in a wavy, dust-streaked window pane.
Her hand flew to her throat and she leaned in, looked deeper. It was her alright. But a high octane version. A messy one. Her clothes were rumpled and damp. Her usually tidy hair was a wild tumble of damp waves around her shoulders. And her face … her facial appearance even seemed to have altered. What she’d always seen as soft, unremarkable features had transformed somehow. She looked … edgy, she finally decided. Decisive. Experienced and lean.
Kick ass, she thought with a ridiculous little smile and embraced the idea.
And she looked, she told herself, like a woman who did not need a man like Joe Green to complete her life, but like a woman who could damn well complete his.
They were getting out of this mess. She was going to make it happen. And when they did, Joe Green was going to find out that Stephanie Tompkins was a force to be reckoned with….
There you have it. A little taste of the new improved Stephanie 🙂 . I think you’re really going to like Stephanie’s journey. And I KNOW you’re going to love her and Joe together.
Have questions? I’d love to hear from you. I’m an open book so ask away to be eligible for a drawing to win an autographed book from my backlist. BTW: Today is my birthday and I’m delighted to be sharing it with you!

Happy Birthday Cindy! I wish you a great day, filled with family and friends, and of course a cake!
Thanks for the chance to win a signed book, I love those! And your latest sure sounds great, as I love strong heroines. Especially when she grows like you describe in this blog. Looking forward to reading it.
I would love to read this book. It sounds like an awesome read. Please enter me in contest. Tore923@aol.com
Happy Birthday!! This book sounds AWESOME! Thank you for the opportunity to win a copy.
Happy Birthday!
She trully does sound like a force to be reckoned with and that’s a good thing, I love Alpha males but I hate them paired up with passive females. Stephanie sounds like someone I’ll be cheering for to get her man!
Thanks for sharing the story with us, I absolutely loved the SEAL of my Dreams anthology and I’m looking forward to reading more of your books 🙂
Thanks for checking in! And thanks for the birthday wishes. Hope you all have a great day!
Happy birthday. Wow over 40 books cograts on that, know you have many more great books to come. Do any of your first characters that you wrote influence your new ones? Joe reminds me a little bit of Ethan and how he thought he had to protect and be the strong one all the time. Forunately Joe figures things out a little quicker.
Happy Birthday! Enjoy your special day and wishing you much success in the year of the Dragon. I’m so glad you keep writing cause I got to read your fantastic books. I can’t wait to read LMS. Am excited for One Eyed-Jacks.
Happy Birthday! I’ve enjoyed this series. I always hate to see them end.
Happy Birthday, Cindy!! And what a wonderful story! I’ve loved your books for years, and still have some of those Loveswept stories on my shelves ~ but I’m much more partial to your Black Ops!! Congrats on the release of Last Man Standing ~ can’t wait to read it!!
Happy Birthday, Cindy! Have a wonderful day. I can’t wait to read Last Man Standing, I have loved this series and will miss them..
Happy Birthday, Cindy! Have a great day. Your books sounds fabulous and I can’t wait to read it.
Happy Birthday Cindy. Hope you have a great one. This book and series look great and would love to win and read. I have not had a chance to check out any of this series yet. Will have to add to my must buy list.
My question for you is what are you working on next? Any new stand-alones or new series that you are starting? Also do you have any favorite book or author recommendations for us readers?
Thanks for the giveaway and the chance to win.
Happy Happy b-day! Today is my mother’s b-day too! Wishing you the very best! 😀
thanks for the birthday wishes everyone and the kind words.
and yes – I’m working on a new series – a spin off of BOI called One-Eyed Jacks. I’m really excited about it. You met Mike – Primetime – Brown in With No Remorse and will see him again in Last Man Standing AND Mike is the hero of the first One-Eyed Jacks books. And surprise – the BOI’s will show up to help him out of a jam. You didn’t REALLY think I could walk away from those guys without a backwards glance did you? :o)
Happy, Happy Birthday! I loved ‘SEAL of My Dreams’ and the story of How & Why it was created.
Question: Which of your books would you recommend be read first? Is it better if the series were read in order?
So want to have this book in my collection!
Happy Birthday!!!!:D ..have a great day 🙂
my best wishes :*
the million dollar question.. What are u working on now? 🙂 Lol
also, do u still get nervous before release day? Even after all the books u’ve published? 🙂
Thanks again all. You totally rock!
As for what book do I rec for you to read first? All of the books are stand alones. you don’t have to read them in order to enjoy them. having said that, however, if you’re new to the series, I’d probably suggest that you start with To The Edge, the first book in the Bodyguard series. There are 6 books in that series (a complete list in order of release is on my website) and the hero and heroine of the first BOI book are introduced in that sixth book. There are 7 books in the BOI series and you could absolutely start with book one Show No Mercy but be aware that you will hear from some of the characters in the BG series.
Again – the books stand alone and you don’t have to read them in order but if you’re a stickler about starting from the beginning, start with To The Edge. :o)
Right now I’m working on the first book of a new series (a spin off from the BOI series) One-Eyed Jacks. I’ve posted an excerpt from the first book on my FB LIKES page in the NOTES tab. Check it out. You’ll see that this book is going to take us for quite a ride :o)
Hi Cindy! Happy Birthday! Hope you have a good one 🙂
A question for you is, since I’m not too familiar with the Black Ops Inc series, I was wondering if the ideas and story arcs for all the books came to you all at once or did the series grow as you starting writing each book? Also, I’d be interested to know, which scene are you most excited for readers to read in Last Man Standing?
Congrats on your latest release!
Happy Birthday, Cindy. Congrats on the new release. I’ve been waiting for Joe and Stephanie to get their own book. I’m sad to see the series end, but am excited about your next series.
Congrats Cindy on your latest release and Happy Birthday! Can’t wait to see what you’ve come up with:)
What a great story Cindy! I love Special Ops heroes so I am very much looking forward to Last Man Standing. Congratulations on a 20 year career as a writer!
Happy Birthday!
Sounds like a great book!
Happy birthday Cindy! Love your books. 🙂
Do you think you’ll write an alpha spec ops heroine with a beta hero? I’d love to read it!
hankts AT internode DOT on DOT net
happy b’day ms cindy and congrats for your latest release your book..
enter me for ypur contest ^^
Winnie asked about ideas and story arcs and how they came to me. Generally, it’s a book at a time. The only exceptions are Into The Dark’s story arc began forming in To The Brink when Amy showed up in that Abu Sayaff terrorist camp in the Philippines. I know she had to have a story. And her story arc (Into The Dark) spawned the story for Show No Mercy which launched the Black Ops Series. Joe’s story was actually running around in the back of my mind for a long time – I wanted closure to what happened in Sierra Leone all those years ago ALMOST as much as Joe wanted it :o)
As for which scene I’m most excited about in Last Man Standing, there are several. The scene where we find Joe, alone and almost broken in that Sierra Leone prison has stayed with me a long time. Also the scene where he breaks down once he realizes all his suspicions about who was responsible for Bryan Tompkinses death are realized. And I’ve got to say, I loved the epilogue scene where the entire crew is gathered together. It was a chance to say good-bye and yet get a sense of wonderful new beginnings.
Kaetrin = I’d love to write a beta hero but my publisher is pretty sold on the alpha males :o)
I will say that in Last Man Standing, Joe – who is as alpha as they come – was VERY dependent on Stephanie to save is bacon and his life. He was physically beaten down and simply not capable of taking care of himself during part of the book. That doesn’t make him beta but it sure turned the tables and it was a very difficult pill for him to swallow :o)
Happy Birthday and also Happy Release Day!!! Love all your books and am anxious to read Last Man Standing!!!
Joe sounds great Cindy 🙂 ..can’t wait to meet him 😉 did u had a nice day today?:P
Happy birthday, Cindy. Wish you all the best and good luck. May you always succeed with your books.
To be honest, I’ve never read Black Ops series, or any of your book, well, except for The Librarian’s Passionate Knight. But somehow I’m so excited with Last Man Standing, because I really love the cover and the title.
And I got more excited because we have the same birthday, January 30th.
One could wish to win an autographed book for her birthday gift, right? =D
Happy Birthday Cindy! Can’t wait for to meet Joe…
I cannot wait to read this! I say that every time one of Cindy’s books comes out, but I really really cannot wait for this one. I have it on at the library, woohoo! Love your work Cindy and your Boi’s! Congrat’s!
I meant on HOLD, derrr……..makes it sound like I’m wearing the book in the Library…lol! That is what Cindy’s Boi’s do to me. 😀
Happy birthday. question to you is… did you have all the characters decided upon before starting the first book?
Wow. Lots of shared birthdays today. Happy happy to all.
As for whether or not I had all the characters decided upon before starting the first book, I DID have the first 4 characters for the Body Guard series – brothers Nolan, Ethan, Dallas and sister Eve. After that, it was all on the fly ;O).
And you asked about doubts? I always have doubts. Not with just that first book but with every one after that. Each book presents a new challenge and a new set of insecurities :o)
Hi Cindy – Happy birthday! We share birthdays! Anyway my question is – Did you have any doubts about writing your first book?
Can’t wait for Joe’s book.

Ms. Gerard I just love your books:) I love your alpha males.strong, sexy and pertective and your lovely alpha females.Strong, sexy, independent, and loving & helpful to their man.I can’t wait for the new book.
Happy Birthday !! I love your sense of humor and have read all of your books several times. I’m looking forward to Last Man Standing coming out 🙂 Keep up the good work and write faster 🙂
This book is next on my list!! Can’t wait to read it. I loved all the others!! I enjoy your writing, please keep it up!! Thank you for the opportunity to win a copy. That would be so great!
Hi Cindy! Have you ever thought about writing a book about Bryan? I thought it might be cool that maby he had a woman bef he died that maby no knew about, or that there was a woman who was pregnant w/ his child that surfaces later on or something in that contex.
happy birthday cindy.. can’t wait till tomorrow, keep up the great work. ❤ your book!!!
When choosing a characters name, have you ever named a not so likable charater after someone you did not care for? Or a character after somone you liked?
I have both the Bodyguard series and the BOI series up to Last Man Standing. I love, love these books and can’t wait to read Last Man Standing. I hate to see these come to an end. They’re in my keep forever library so I can revisit them anytime. I am also really excited for the One-Eyed Jack series!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Cindy. I hope you had an amazing day!
Who was your favorite romance author before you became a writer?
Happy Birthday Cindy.. I am so, so looking forward to reading this story… Did you create Joe from some one you knew?
Happy Birthday and congrats on your newest release. It doesn’t seem possible that the BOI series is ending. However, seven is a *very* lucky number! My wish is for much happiness and luck for you in your next endeavor.
Happy Birthday Cindy! I was checking out your Bodyguards series last night which sounds fantastic. Congratulations on your newest release.
Elizabeth I try very hard not to use names of people or family members – lol – in my books. I don;t want anyone to think I’ve patterned someone after them, good or bad. Swelled head and bruised egos ya know :o)
LaVryle Spencer was my favorite author. She, Tom and Sharon Curtis and Sandra Brown all inspired me to write.
And Joe – like many of my characters was drawn strictly from my imagination, however, I suspect there are parts of his personality that I’ve subconsciously drawn from men I know. He was a very interesting man and I found out when I started writing that book that I really knew very little about him … those secrets all unfolded as the story unfolded :o)
Happy birthday! Congratulations on your new book! Are there other genres you would like to write in?
I forgot to answer the question about a book about Bryan. While I would love to explore that idea, I don’t see it happening. But I do love that you feel he was worth a story. :o)
And right now I’m loving the RS genre. I’ve often thought about writing a childrens book but that always gets put on the back burner. maybe someday :o)
thanks again for everyone for showing up
Happy (a little late, sorry! But you can’t have too many birthday wishes, right?
😉 ) birthday! Your series sounds fantastic, and I’m really looking forward to starting it!
