Marliss Melton

Author of “SEALed By Fate” in SEAL of My Dreams

U.S. Navy SEALs, True Heroes

He knows 22 ways to kill a man with his bare hands.  He can run four miles in less than thirty two minutes carrying a forty-pound rucksack. He can survive in the desert, in the jungle, and on a barren mountaintop. He can shoot his target up to a mile away. He can swim two miles in the ocean in under 75 minutes and hold his breath for more than 4. He notices the details that other people overlook. And once he sets his mind on an objective, he never gives up.

When he walks into a crowd, he holds himself with confidence, eyes scanning the area, ever alert to danger. He is a master of concealment, a shadow merging into the dark of night. He is a consummate over-achiever, a man who seeks a challenge and success in everything he does.

Everything.

How can a man who pays that much attention to detail not know how to please a woman?

And do I even need to bring up stamina?

Of all the warriors in this world, a U.S. Navy SEAL will make you feel the safest. He and his teammates freed the American captured by Somali pirates. He and his teammates hunted down Osama Bin Laden. He is the finest warrior in the world.

At long last, the world has come to recognize what romance writers and readers have known all along:  Navy SEALs are the ultimate hero. That’s why SEAL of my Dreams is such a special publication. And that’s why I’m thrilled to have contributed to it, knowing all the proceeds from its sale will go to the Veteran’s Research Corporation.

It’s about time we gave back to the guys who’ve given us so much to dream about!

Is there anyone out there braver than a U.S. Navy SEAL?

In my opinion, yes, there is. It’s the wife of a Navy SEAL.

Think about it. What would be scarier than jumping out of an airplane at obscene altitudes, into hostile territory? Why, sending the one you love (or the father of your children) into such a place, not fully knowing where they are headed or whether they’ll ever come back.

It’s been my privilege to meet several wives–or, rather, widows–of Navy SEALs. My first thought when I met them was, “Wow, these women are beautiful.” My second thought was, “Wow, they’re smart.” And when I saw what they did to uphold the memories of their husbands, I thought, “Wow, they are freaking heroic.”

This is me with Laura McGreevy, whose husband, Mike, was one of the fifteen SEALs who died during Operation Redwing in 2005. (That was the worst SEAL disaster to occur until the even more awful crash this summer.) Every year, Laura throws herself into fundraisers so she can offer a scholarship in her husband’s name. The Mike McGreevy Memorial Scholarship offers financial assistance to an exceptional young person who, like Mike, wants to make a difference in this world. Here’s the link if you would like to donate to this awesome scholarship: http://www.mikemcgreevymemorialfund.org

And this is me with Maria “Patsy” Dietz, the widow of Danny Deitz, who also died in Operation Redwing. Remarried to another Navy SEAL, Patsy heads up a support group for the widows of Navy SEALS.

These are just two examples of the kind of remarkable women who chose to marry remarkable men. Like their husbands, dead or alive, they don’t just exist. They make a difference.

Let’s talk about making a difference. I sure hope SEAL of My Dreams reaps huge profits, so that the Veterans Research Corporation can improve the lives all of our service men and women. They deserve all the help they can get.

Please share with me how you’re making a difference!

Author of “Her Secret Pirate” in SEAL of My Dreams

The Appeal of the Military Hero

Bill Moyers once said, “We seem to worship celebrities today, not heroes.” While I don’t want to worship any human, I do agree that much of our culture today makes a to-do about celebrities, especially their foibles. Many people obsess over what they wear, discuss their lives, and defend their sometimes illegal actions, even. And yes, now that I think about it, many young people do worship them as their heroes. We are fascinated by bad behavior and its destructive nature.

Yet, one type of hero has universal appeal. He’s the military hero. You’ll find him across all genres, from pure military thrillers to romances to science fiction to comic books. His characteristics appeal to young and old, men and women. As a romance writer, I get accused of many things, including writing unrealistic heroes, setting a higher standard than the norm. However, one of the most popular protagonists portrayed today is the military hero and one can’t possibly get more realistic than that.

The military hero is appealing because of many reasons. Physically, he is often at the prime of his life and in great shape. Intellectually, he has special training at his job, be it as a pilot or naval warfare or special operations. Viscerally, we respond to what he represents–honor, self-sacrifice, pride in his job, the ability to take control and be responsible at the right time, and finally, courage at all times. These are qualities that most of us admire and sought to do for ourselves in our own lives. In combat, every element is pushed to the extreme, and these same qualities are magnified even more. The military hero is mythic and human at the same time and this duality plays into our enjoyment of the military hero as a character in books and movies. He is Everyman at his best and we celebrate those qualities. Thus, “setting a higher standard than the norm” is not unrealistic at all.

In SEAL Of My Dreams, a group of romance writers got together to give their tribute of these special men. We chose the Navy SEALs as our hero because of that special group of guys who were recently in the news, but through the stories in the anthology, we ultimately mean to honor ALL who serve in our military. In this anthology, you’ll find many of the characteristics that make the military hero so special and why he is so loved by romance readers.

My contribution is titled Her Secret Pirate. The short story takes place on a ship hijacked by pirates in the Indian Ocean. My hero is one of the SEALs from my Crossfire trilogy and he and his team have been sent to rescue the Ambassador and his daughter on that ship. Because of the length, I couldn’t really play up the many intricacies of planning that go with hostage negotiation, so I concentrated on highlighting my hero doing his job instead. It’s never a one-man operation in combat, especially in a Navy SEAL team, but in writing, I love isolating my guy to show the courage and passion that make the military man a worthy hero. I hope you’ll enjoy Zone’s story!

You can order SEAL Of My Dreams in ebook or print format from Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and Belle Books. In honor of our veterans, all the proceeds from the book go to the Veterans Research Corporation, a non-profit foundation supporting veterans medical research.

Stephanie Tyler

Author of “Holding On” in SEAL of My Dreams

I’m really thrilled to be a part of the SEAL of My Dreams anthology that comes out, appropriately, Veteran’s Day in both print and eFormat through Belle Bridge Books.

My story, Holding On, starts six months after the end of Hold on Tight, and it catches you up on the brothers from the Hold Trilogy, something readers have been asking about for a while.  This seemed the perfect opportunity to do so.

I do a lot of research when I write the military romances, and I get to speak to a lot of military men and women.  One conversation stands out in my mind – I asked him if he minded that there were romance books featuring military men and he was like, are you kidding me?  You guys always make us the heroes – what’s wrong with that?

Absolutely nothing.

Look, it’s a fantastic book – authors I admire, authors I’m friends with and a few I hadn’t read before I caught their stories here.  We all gave our time, our stories in order to help and I suspect every author in this anthology said yes pretty quickly, without a second thought to the fact that they’d pledge all their proceeds to charity.

So please, buy SEAL of MY DREAMS.  Buy it for friends and families.  Encourage others to do so.  In a community that always supports its own with various auctions when someone’s in need, don’t view this book as anything different. We have many active duty and former military women in our romance community.  This book will directly benefit all Veterans in the form of medical research, and for no other reason, buy it as a thank you to these men and women who protect us.

Tonight from 6:00 – 6:30 PM EST there’s a Circle of Seven radio live chat for SEAL of My Dreams with me, Cindy Gerard, Stephanie Bond, Jami Alden and Deb Smith of Belle Bridge Books – you can chat live at www.blogtalkradio.com/Circle-of-Seven (there’s a chat board up).  You can also call into the show at (646) 200 – 4071.  After the show you can download the podcast of come on over to ReadersEntertainment.com and check out the blog that will accompany this chat!
