FATE HAS THROWN TWO SWORN ENEMIES…
Of all the hotel rooms rented by all the adulterous politicians in Chicago, female Assistant U.S. Attorney Cameron Lynde had to choose the one next to 1308, where some hot-and-heavy lovemaking ends in bloodshed. And of all the FBI agents in Illinois, it had to be Special Agent Jack Pallas who gets assigned to this high-profile homicide. The same Jack Pallas who still blames Cameron for a botched crackdown three years ago—and nearly ruining his career…
… INTO EACH OTHER’S ARMS
Work with Cameron Lynde? Are they kidding? Maybe, Jack thinks, this is some kind of welcome-back prank after his stint away from Chicago. But it’s no joke: the pair is going to have to put their rocky past behind them and focus on the case at hand. That is, if they can cut back on the razor-sharp jibes—and smother the flame of their sizzling-hot sexual tension…
~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~
I’ve said it before, I find Jack Bauer from 24 very sexy. Kiefer Sutherland doesn’t do much for me, but give him a gun, the ability to choke bad guys with his feet, and the task of saving the world, and I’m smitten.
Another brooding tough guy I love? Jason Bourne. Car wrecks, gunshots, broken bones, nothing stops this guy. But hidden deep beneath the action hero surface there seems to be a softer, sensitive side that makes him that much more complex and appealing of a character.
When I came up with the idea for Something About You, and realized my hero was going to be an FBI Agent, I originally envisioned him as a wry, devil-may-care type. Almost immediately, I realized that wasn’t going to work. See, the hero, Jack Pallas, had this backstory where he worked undercover for two years for an organized crime syndicate. And that backstory left Jack with some scars—both the mental and physical kind.
The problem that arose after I decided Jack was going to be a brooding, dangerous type was that I wanted Something About You to be a lighter, funnier contemporary romance. Sure, there’s a suspense element, but that’s just a subplot—the driving force that brings the hero and heroine together. And I first thought to myself, “You can’t put an edgy, action-hero in a light-hearted story!” But then I wondered, hmm… or can you?
These musings helped to shape my new release, Something About You. I like to think of Something About You as my “What if somebody dropped Jack Bauer into a romantic comedy?” book. Which means that my hero, FBI Special Agent Jack Pallas (who pretty much can kill people with his thumb) is running around all dark and scowling and trying to save the day, while everyone else is cracking jokes. What’s fun about Jack is that we get to see him slowly warm up throughout the course of the book as he begins to fall for and trust the heroine.
And another great thing about putting the brooding tough guy in a lighter contemporary romance is that—gasp!—he can actually get the girl in the end. Jack Bauer, Jason Bourne, Angel from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, name your brooder—they all appear destined to spend their days (or in Angel’s case, millennia) by themselves. My hero, on the other hand? Well, let’s just say there’s at least one tough guy who gets his happily ever after in the end.
But enough rambling from me… who’s your favorite tough guy hero? (Books, film, TV). Whoever he is, can you picture him in a romantic comedy? One randomly selected person who comments below will win a copy of Something About You.
Thank you, Ms James–being a diehard Bourne fan, now I’m dying to read Something About You!
So, ladies and gents, leave a comment answering Ms James’ question and be entered to win the book! Good luck to all.
This is totally off the wall but my favorite is Liev Schreiber’s part in The Sum of All Fears. He plays the “get the job done guy”. Anyways I saw that movie forever ago and thought he was the ultimate behind the scenes tough guy. Thanks for the peek at the book and I look forward to reading it. Have a great day!
Congrats to Julie, again…great reviews everywhere! I loved JTSMA & PMP.
Favorite tough guy in movies is Hugh Jackman/Wolverine from X-Men, in books…Stephanie Tyler’s SEALs are pretty tough & sexy. Jake from Hard To Hold is probably my favorite of that series.
Tough hm, great answer above. Liev was great in The sum of all fears.
I will go with Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, he was bad-ass, but Wolverine in a romantic comedy, no way. That I can’t see lol
Hi Julie, I was wondering were do you get your ideas from?
I know exactly what you mean about Kiefer Sutherland as Jack Bauer!
Does Acheron count as a tough guy hero?
Good morning, everyone! So glad to be here today, hanging out with you ladies!
Angela: I haven’t seen The Sum of All Fears… is that a Jack Ryan movie? Random tidbit: I met Liev Schreiber at a restaurant in NY, in line for the bathroom. This was several years ago, and I couldn’t remember his name… so my friends and I kept calling him “the bad guy from Scream.” LOL.
blodeuedd: Wolverine is an excellent tough guy choice. And it’s funny, because Hugh Jackson does romantic comedy so well, too.
Scorpio: Thank you! Glad you enjoyed JTSMA and PMP! I haven’t read Stephanie Tyler’s series, but I should check them out.
Danielle: I get my ideas from a variety of places… For example, the idea for SOMETHING ABOUT YOU came to me when I was spending the night in a hotel room and was kept awake by my very *loud* next-door neighbors. As I was lying in bed, the idea just came to me– a women who hears strange noises coming from the hotel room next to hers, noises that turn out to be a murder.
Chris: I haven’t read Acheron… but the name alone sounds like a tough guy to me. So sure, he counts. 😉
I’m going out on a limb here and say Wesley Snipes. He plays some pretty tough guys (good and bad) and he does it well.
And how about a kick-ass heroine? My vote goes to Jennifer Garner/Sydney Bristow of Alias…my all-time favorite program.
I’m nore of a tv person than movie so I would say David Boreanes-Booth from Bones.I can totally see him in a Romantic comedy.
I am not really sure if this counts, but one of my favorite tough guys is Sawyer from Lost… I will admit that he is what brings me back to this show season after season. He is just yummy!
I think that Something About You sounds really great and I would love to be entered.
I’m old school, I like James Bond esp. played by Sean Connery. I’ve never watch 24 but that won’t deter me from enjoying SAY! Congrats on the new release. Books sounds awesome!
Looks great! Thanks for the interview. 🙂
My tough guy… I have way to many from books, so I will go with John Cena from The Marine. He is the ultimate tough guy… in that movie… oh man… he went to hell and back to get him woman and I can sooo see him playing in a comedy romance!
Thanks for the chance at winning this book!!!!
Oh yes, Sawyer from LOST – his sexy voice too.
I Love Julie’s books. Please count me in.
Thanks for the interview.
I have to go with Pierce Brosnan as James Bond. He played a tough secret agent and he has done a romantic comedy.
I would have to say Wolverine from the X-Men movies. He is totally hot. 🙂 I don’t think I could see him in a romantic comedy.
Patrick Swayze has appeared as a tough guy hero is a few movies and also played in a few comedies.
In books, one of my favorite tough guys is Jake is Stephanie Tyler’s Hard to Hold…but I could not imagine him in a comedy.
Hmmm… drop my fav tough guy into a romantic comedy!?! 😀 I have to think about that some… your book sounds like a wonderful read…
Tough guy gone romantic comedy…Hm? That would have to be Matt Damon as Jason Bourne. He’s pretty tough in his Bourne persona, but I’ve seen the lighthearted, funny side him,too. He can be adoring when he comes out to frolic wearing that big smile of his.
Congrats Julie!
I would say Pierce Brosnan from James Bond.
I love 24, and I have a hard time seeing Jack Bauer in a romantic comedy. Denzel Washington? Yep, he works. Clive Owen? Yep, he’s good to go. But, sad for Jack, he is destined for a life without romance (or comedy!)
Hello,
What a great question. 24 is one of my favorite shows.
From books, it would be Sam Starrett from Suzanne Brockmann’s troubleshooter series. I can actually see Sam in a romantic comedy role because Suz Brockmann writes him with a sense of humor.
From movies, I love Jack Traven (Keanu Reeves) from Speed. That character is actually in need of a little sense of humor & I’m a big fan of John McClane (Bruce Willis) from the Die Hard franchise. John McClane had some great one-liners, but in a more sarcastic way.
Thanks.
GREAT blog…and I’ve been hearing how great your books are not only from my book pimp, Fatin, but on the loops as well…can’t wait to read Something About You!!
Hmm…I can think of lots of romance heros I love, but right now I think my favorite TV hero is G (Chris O’Donnell) from NCIS:LA. Now, he’s not my typical kind of hero, he’s WAY to short…but there is just something about the way he presents himself that overcomes that shortness, lol. He’s got gorgeous eyes, that Alpha personality, and that whole air of mystery and nomad that just makes me want to sex him up and Momma him at the same time.
The new book sounds great. My all time favorite tough guy would be Wolverine – comics, books and especially movies. Gotta love Hugh Jackman in every movie I’ve seen so far.
Can’t wait to read more about Jack and Cameron. One of my favorite tough guys from film has to be Russell Crowe in Gladiator.
But to be honest, I can’t imagine a guy like Russell in a romantic comedy. Just doesn’t fit.
Congrats on your release! My favorite tough guy has always been Clint Eastwood – man, those eyes, that voice – and he can definitely do comedy as well!
Congrats on the new release, Julie. I love Jason Bourne, too. Cindy Gerard’s heroes in the Black Ops Inc books always get the job done.
Have to go with James Bond.
Hi again everyone!! Some great comments here… two, in particular that I have to respond to. For all of you who mentioned Sawyer from Lost. . . oh, I am so in the same camp. I pretty much love every scene he’s in.
And another great call is Keanu Reeves in Speed. I don’t like KR in some movies, but he was perfect there. A tough action guy with a soft spot for a girl. Very swoon-worthy. 😉
I have to go with Jason Statham as Frank Martin in The Transporter movies. Great tough guy/action hero. Though I’m not sure I could see him in a romantic comedy, its possible, he seems to have a nice sense of humor in The Transporter series.
Gerard Butler – anything he is in, particulary PS I Love you. He is in or will be soon a romantic comedy with Jennifer Aniston.
The Rock is one my favorite tough man. He has the rugged and sexy looks I can’t help but fall for. I have no problem picturing him in a romantic comedy. Seeing love put Goliath on his knees would be… very entertaining !
Congrats again Julie !!
I am going to go with Sam Elliot playing Wade Garrett in “Roadhouse” with Patrick Swayze. I have been in love with this man since way back in the 70’s and with his devilish charm and piercing eyes he could have in younger days played in a romantic comedy without any problems at all!!!
Love all the others choices and this was fun thanks Azteclady and Julie for thinking this one up to promote the new release!
I see my choice has already been listed but Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine leapt to mind. And yes, I could imagine the brooding character in a romantic comedy.
I have to agree with you, Jason Bourne and Jack Bauer.
Congrats on the new release! The new book sounds great and I’m really hoping to win since I’m dying to win this. My favorite is one from the classic tv show The Man From U.N.C.L.E. I had a crush on David McCallum who played Iliya Kuryakin. Smart, cool, and didn’t chase after every woman like his partner did.
I love BOOTH from the show BONES. He’s the only one I can think of right now. The book sounds great.
hugs,
WendyK
I’m going with Hugh’s Wolverine also. I usually prefer romance and light comedies so I don’t have too many tough guy heroes on my radar!
Patrick Swayze in Dirty Dancing – I saw that movies dozens of times.
Hi Julie, I also love Jason Bourne.
Rosie, I’m with you for Gerard. 😉
I’m also looking forward to a new show with Timothy Olyphant as a sheriff, my kind of hero.
Congratulations to Julie on her new release! I can’t think of a tough guy. One of my favorite TV characters right now is Castle but I don’t know how tough he is.
Ohh thought of another one, the guy from HUMAN TARGET. There’s 3 guys on the show, one is the “behind the scenes” guy, one is the “gets the stuff done” or the “target” guy and one is very very strange and a mystery, for some reason he’s the one I just want to know more about.
hugs,
WendyK
Congratulations on the new release Julie. I am a huge fan of your novels, I love the snappy conversations, the humor, and just the fun in your stories. I think one of my favorite brooding heroes of late is Raphael from Nalini Singh’s Guild Hunter series. He’s so dark and powerful, but just falls completely for the heroine 🙂
I do like Jack Bauer and Jason Bourne, and could see David Boreanz (Bones, Angel) as a touch guy doing comedy. Another I can think of is Michael Weston on Burn Notice. But I’d choose with Christopher Chance on Human Target mentioned here. played by Mark Valley, he’s got a quirky sense of humor.
Just thought I’d pop back in to say thanks to Fatin for inviting me here today! And thanks to everyone for dropping by–I had a blast hearing about all these tough guys! 😉
Eric from True Blood is pretty tough. I think it would be hilarious to see him in a romantic comedy 😉
Vin Diesel is my fav. touch guy. Don’t really care what movie he’s in. It’s all good, cause he’s SO good 🙂
Ohh I love my action heroes.
Jason Bourne is a favourite but Jason Statham and Vin Diesel aren’t so bad either.
I think my favourite comedy action is The Big Hit with Mark Wahlberg as a hitman with a heart.
Hi Julie!
thanks so much for your post – I’ve never thought about your book that way, but it’s very interesting… to answer your question: I acutally don’t have an action hero in mind but another tough guy (wouldn’t describe him as a hero *gg*) – Dr. Gregory House 😉 but I couldn’t imagine him in a romantic comedy *lol*
wish you all the best,
Ina
Clint Eastwood is a real tough character. But sometimes there is a softness there – I wouldnt mind seeing him do so comedy.
My favorite tough guy hero (well I have two): Wrath and Z from Black Dagger Brotherhood series. No, I can’t picture them doing a romantic comedy!
LOL
My picks would be Sawyer form Lost and Booth from Bones!
hugh jackman or vin diesel
I love Ewan McGregor!!
He was excellent in Star Wars and Moulon Rouge!
Hi, Julie. Can’t wait to try your book. I have to say, I have a thing for Jason Bourne, but I loved El Mariachi in Once Upon a Time In Mexico, too. 😉
My favorite tough guy hero is Mark Harmon as Jethro Gibbs in NCIS.
I’ve always love Clint Eastwood as a bad guy…and his dry wit although I don’t think he would be very good at straight comedy.
On the other had I also love Mel Gibson as the bad guy….and I think he would be much more suited for comedy.
Wolverine (yay! Hugh!), Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) and Gerald Butler – he’s played heroes (300) anti hero (Law Abiding Citizen) romantic hero (PS Ilove You) and now after seeing the promos –a fuuny hero (Bounty Hunter)
