I Discovered Anne Hathaway
Yep, you read the title right. I discovered the actress Anne Hathaway. It was your classic “actress discovered in a shopping mall” kind of story (with “kind of” being the operative words). Several years ago, after a long day of shopping, I felt like taking a break, so I strolled over to the movie theater. They were playing a movie called THE PRINCESS DIARIES. What fun! I love Meg Cabot’s writing, so I was familiar with the book and had heard they were making a movie of it. I immediately bought a ticket.
Princess Mia was this awkward, frizzy-haired girl with bad eyebrows and bad posture, but I could see right through that right away. I knew she could be beautiful and sure enough, abracadabra. A super-fun makeover scene transformed her into a beauty and gave me a satisfyingly smug thrill of delight. As I left the theatre, I called a girlfriend and told her she had to go see that movie. Anne Hathaway was the Next Big Thing, I was sure of it. I talked about that movie for weeks.
Ever since then, whenever I see her in a film, I get an echo of that smug thrill. A smug tickle, if you will. She is, after all, an actress I discovered. We can disregard the producer, director, and everyone else involved in the film. (Except Julie Andrews. One must never disregard Julie Andrews.) No, no. I discovered Anne Hathaway. And then I spread the word about her and so now I feel partly responsible for her success. Congratulations, Anne, and you’re welcome.
I absolutely adore when I hear from a fan who has just discovered me. It’s so much fun to be discovered! There’s such excitement in the tone of their emails and messages on Facebook, and I hope it means that they’re getting the same thrill of delight that I got when I discovered Anne Hathaway. I hope they spread the word about me to their friends. And I hope they know that they truly do play a part in my success.
A lot of fans seem to have discovered me via my latest series, the Lone Star Sisters, which culminates with the November release of HOT ON HER HEELS. In fact, I’ve been getting a lot of emails from people who had never read a romance novel before, who were surprised by how much they loved it. So now I get the thrill of delight from thinking that I may be partly responsible for the future happiness of those readers. Through my books, they were introduced to the world of romance novels, and we all know what a wonderful world that is! A world of exciting possibilities, first kisses, well-matched spar partners, and those oh-so-wonderful happy endings.
Who have you discovered, whether a writer or someone on TV or in movies? How and when did you discover this person? Who did you tell about this person?

Thank you, Ms Mallery!
You can learn more about Ms Mallery’s novels by visiting her website.
To celebrate the release of Hot on Her Heels, Ms Mallery is giving a $50 certificate to Zappos to one lucky commenter (military addresses, US or Canada residents only, as they don’t ship elsewhere)
Hi Susan !! I finished Hot on her Heels just yesterday and loved it. It’s one of your best if can say so. I plan to reread it soon, and not only for chapter 6, but for all the witty banter between those two strong (but not always so) characters.
As for your question, well I’ve just discovered the show CASTLE and loves it. I can’t believe I’ve waited all those months before watching it. Now I’m hooked. By the way, I kept picturing Detective Beckett as Dana while reading HOHH. 😉
I can’t wait to read the end to this great series. Thanks for visiting today.
Hot on Her Heels is on its way to my house as I type…at least that’s what the tracking on my package says. I love this series and can’t wait to read it!!
Good morning, everyone! And thank you for having me!
Emmannuelle, I’ll have to check out CASTLE. Stand by while I get a look at Detective Beckett… http://castletv.net/cast-crew/stana-katic Oh yes, good call! She could definitely play the role of Dana. They describe the show as a witty drama, which, as you may have guessed, I really like.
GSM and Carrie, I hope you love HOT ON HER HEELS! I just got word two days ago that it landed on the NYT bestsellers list at #5, which is sooo exciting! That’s a personal best for me.
I’ll be in and out all day. Looking forward to a fun conversation!
I discovered Carlo Rota on the series 24. He is wonderful. Talented, humorous and unique. I have told friends who appreciate his unique qualities. Congratulations and best of success. Loved this peek into your book.
Hi Susan. Hot on Her Heels sounds great. I loved the Princess Diaries movies. Ann Hathaway is a talented actress.
I just went on a two-week vacation that involved four whole days of driving. My hubby can’t read in the car, but I can–what a blessing! I bought the whole “Lone Star Sisters” series right before we left on our trip, and finished all four books! They were SO hard to put down!! (It kind of reminds me of the original three “Star Wars” movies–you knew there was more to the story and couldn’t wait to see what happened next!!) I’ve read many of Susan’s books, but I have to say that this is my absolute favorite series of hers. I’d love to see a follow-up book that tells us more about the weddings and babies.
Looking forward to the next series, Susan!
I must say I was apprehensive to think of Garth being a hero, but as always it was amazing! Garth and Dana became my favorite couple of the series!!! I love all your series and can’t wait for the Fools Gold series!!!
Anne, Carlo Rota is very masculine. Something about that piercing stare.
Crystal, She is! And *I* discovered her!
Jackie, What a sweet and wonderful comment. Thank you! I’m so glad you enjoyed the Lone Star Sisters. I hadn’t heard the Star Wars comparison before, but I like it. Maybe we can make some action figures! That would be fun. Kids around the country playing with little Lexi, Skye, Izzy, and Dana dolls.
Ipm half way through this book and was so thrilled for you with your #5 on the New York Times list yesterday. The book is incredible and like Mia, Dana is emerging thanks to the love of the Titan sisters and Garth’s attention.
I hate to see the series end, but looking forward to your new one in 2010.
Congrats on hitting #5 on the NYT bestseller list! and can I just say thank you for discovering Anne Hathaway…hollywood is a better place with her there.
Can’t wait to read Hot On Her Heals. Your books get recommended all over the blogosphere, its defintely made me have to check them out.
The book sounds and looks fabulous! It’s definitely in my TBR pile right now!
I have been enjoying your books for years, Susan! 😀
My recent discovery is author Joyce DiPastena… I have had the pleasure of reading her recent release and found I could not put her book down. I love finding authors that are new to me and adding them to my growing list of favs! 😀
Calila and Jeanette, Thanks for posting! I hope you love HOT ON HER HEELS.
Colleen, what a nice thing to say! Thank you! So glad you’ve enjoyed my books. Glad, too, you’ve discovered a new author you love. Isn’t that fun?
Hi, Susan!! I’ve loved your books for some time, so can’t say I’ve discovered you any time recently, lol, but LOVE your stories!! But I DID recently discover Brenda Novak…I’ve followed her Diabetes auction for years, bid and talked about it, and actually had some of her books on my TBR shelf. Have NO idea why I hadn’t read one. Then I picked up The Perfect Couple and started reading it. I couldn’t stop!! It was so twistedly good, lol, and now I’m on The Perfect Liar and it’s even better and I’ve been telling everyone I know how much I love them and how the heck did such a suspense lover like me miss her for so many years? What the heck? I’m thrilled to have found someone with such a big back list out there!! And I’m selling her like crazy to all my reader friends! And I love it even more because I know she does such great things for diabetes.
And than you for discovering Ann Hathaway, becuase I love her!! She’s so refreshing!!
Can’t wait to read Hot on Her Heels!!
Hi Susan, I discovered Stephenie Meyer through her Twilight saga. Just finished BREAKING DAWN and vey much enjoyed the saga.
I discovered your books while browsing through the library wanting to delve into contemporary after months of only reading historicals. I read the THE MARCELLI PRINCESS which was so cute and funny that I had to go back and devour the rest of the series. Thanks for your wonderful books.
Congratulations on HOT ON HER HEELS.
This wasn’t anytime recently but in the early 80’s I felt like I had discovered Sarah Jessica Parker. I saw her in a movie called Somewhere Tomorrow and loved her. The movie is not up to todays standard of a great movie but I loved it and have watched it soo many times. It is about a girl that is mourning the loss of her father and witnesses a plane crash. She is injured and also starts seeing the pilot from the plane who is suppose to be dead. Is he really? Way before her sex in the city days.
By the way, I also saw princess diaries and loved anne hathaway from the beginning. Have never read the book though. Is the book different enough that it needs to be read??
Melissa, Oooh, you’re right! It’s especially wonderful to discover a writer with a great backlist (or an actor with lots of film credits) because you get to instantly multiply your pleasure exponentially.
Armenia, I’m thrilled that you enjoyed the Marcelli series. Libraries are the perfect place to discover new authors. I love librarians; the really good ones read widely across genres and are able to match the right book to the right reader. Their excitement is contagious.
love your books
congrats on teh new one and great reviews
love megan harts books
Congrats on your new release! Your book sound fabulous and I am going to have to get it! My greatest discovery of lately has been Castle and The Good Wife. I love these shows they are awesome.
Congrats on the new release, Susan. My newest discovery is USA’s new show “White Collar.” It’s very entertaining and the lead is hot.
Congratulations on your new release. I too discovered Castle and told my mother to watch. It makes me smile each week.
Well I really can’t say that I discovered her but I got my sister and both my daughters hooked on reading J.D. Robb’s In Death series. They didn’t think they would like them but, they are hooked. They are always calling me to ask when she has a new one coming out. I love your books, I haven’t started your Lone Star Sisters series yet because I’m waiting to pick up the last one. That way I can sit and devour them one after the other. I have a huge collection of your books and I re-read them all the time.
I discovered CL Wilson through a recommendation by another author, Christine Feehan. I tried her first book and have been hooked ever since. I have been telling friends and family members who are big romance readers like me. Congrats on the new release.
Hot on Her Heels sounds like a great read! Adding it to my wishlist now.
As for what I discovered and proceeded to pimp out to everyone, is the tv show The Big Bang Theory. I love the geeky humor of the boys. And it’s cool that the lone female character is from Nebraska, like me.
Hot on Her Heels is on my TBB list (After my Christmas shopping this weekend.). I have been touting Castle to friends, family and talking about it Online. I truly enjoy the show and each episode is so entertaining! I have also decided I liked Eastwick as well, it’s fun, flirty and mysterious. *G*
Hot on Her Heels is on my list of book yet unread… but I’m gonna get there, hopefully by or before Christmas… I was soo happy to find it two weeks before the release date in my favorite book store when usually I have some troubles finding my fav English books… I’m really psyched to read any of Susan’s books!!!
kh, Thanks! It’s been fun to read the reviews.
Quilt Lady, you’re the second vote for Castle. I’m definitely going to have to check it out. And Maureen, you make vote #3!
Cyclops, I haven’t seen White Collar yet, either. Thanks for the recommendation!
Linda, the JD Robb books are fabulous. And of *course* you discovered her… just like I discovered Anne Hathaway.
Christie, Doesn’t it feel fun to recommend a new writer to your friends and famiy, and then have them come back with excitement in their voices to tell you how much they loved the book? That’s the spark I’m talking about.
Brandy and Joder, thanks for adding HOT ON HER HEELS to your wishlists! I hope you lve it!
Oops, Brandy… you’re vote #4 for Castle. I have *got* to check out this show!
I always say that i discovered Christian Slater and Christian Bale. I had a crush on Christian Slater when he did a movie called Gleamng the Cube. all my friends did not know who he was until he was in Robin Hood. I had a thing for Christian Bale back when he did Newsies.
I have the first two Lone Star Sisters books on my TBR shelves, the third is on my To Check Out list at the library; unfortunately they aren’t carrying HOT ON HER HEELS, which means it’s currently at the top of my wish list. The only thing holding me back from reading right now is NaNoWriMo, but as soon as that’s done I’ll be diving in. 🙂
I probably won’t win, because I never win contests, but this was a pretty good read. I’ll be reading more often now. 🙂
Oh my goodness!!! I thought I was the only one that remembered Gleaming the Cube. I have asked so many places about the movie and eveyone always looks at me like I am speaking a different language and tell me they have never heard of it. Great Christian Slater movie.
For all of you that love the show Castle I was just wondering if you had seen the sci-fi series that Nathan Fillion who plays Richard Castle starred in. I am not a hard core sci-fi fan but loved the show Firefly that he was in.
As always, I’m late for the chat but I look forward in reading this.
Thanks,
Tracey D
I’ve met some great fans of romance novels on the Amazon Forum and Goodreads and as a result have found several new authors that I’ve added to my wishlist. I just wish I had more time to read all of them!!!
Wow, #5!!! That is wonderful. Congrats.
I like discovering authors before they become well known. That way it feels like you had a tiny part in their rise to fame. I began reading Emma Holly when her first book came out. I was hooked with her first book, Ménage and haven’t stopped reading her since. Ten years later and the Ménage storyline has become mainstream and popular, I think in part due to authors like Ms. Holly.
Oh, my goodness, Sue A. you love discovering new authors, and I am in the market to be discovered!!! What are the odds? lol. But seriously, Susan Mallery, despite her hundreds of books, is a new, and wonderful, author to me. I read her Lone Star Sister books, back to back to back to back to back (in-between final edits for my January 2010 release and a full time day job—can you imagine the dark circles under my eyes?) and I was so excited about her books that I just HAD to reach out to her on Face Book and tell her that I loved her books and cant wait to read—okay, lets face it, devour, her other books. SHE is the one who shared the link to this blog with me, and the rest, as they say, is history. Hey, I guess it was ME who discovered Susan Mallery! Wow, I’m good. 🙂
Let’s see…who have I discovered? Nothing is actually popping into my mind at the moment, but I one of the things that I have discovered or rediscovered is how funny Woody Harrelson is. I have always liked him, but after seeing him in Zombieland…I was reminded why I liked him so much!
I can’t say that i’ve discovered any writers before anyone else discovered them but i do enjoy discovering them for myself. I am currently reading Linda Lael Miller’s books and i found her thru Susan mallery of course!! I read a excerpt for one of Linda’s books in the back of one of Susan’s. Like usually i have read a bunch of Linda’s books now. I discovered Julie Garwood when a friend was reading one of her books and i had to run to the library to see what else she had written and try one out. I was hooked pretty quickly then. There are so many ways to discover a new author and i never know how it’s going to happen. Sometimes if i’m looking a cover grabs me and then i have to read the back and there i go again.
