Hello, Romance Readers at Heart! Hello, Fatin! Thank you so much for inviting me to blog today. As a Romance Reader at Heart, this is just the place for me!
I’ve read romance all my life – definitely ALL my life if you count the wonderful fairytales I devoured as a child as romance and I think you should! My mother gave me my first ‘real’ romance to read when I was eight – she was desperate to shut me up and guess what, it worked! It was a Mills & Boon (Harlequin) called A TOUCH OF SILK by Joyce Dingwall, an Aussie author. And frankly, I’ve been reading romance like it’s going out of style ever since.
Luckily for me (and you, you dedicated romance readers at heart!), it’s not going out of style any time soon.
Dedicated RRAHs recognize a lot of popular themes that turn up over and over in romance fiction. As a reader, I love this continual variation on a theme. I particularly admire a writer’s skill when she takes something I’ve read a million times, like a Cinderella story, and gives it a fresh new twist.
My latest historical romance for Avon, CAPTIVE OF SIN (out in November), draws on many of these popular themes. The funny thing is that, as I writing it, I was just telling the story of national hero Sir Gideon Trevithick and the runaway heiress he rescues, Lady Charis Weston. It’s only later that I recognized how many classic romance elements appear in this book.
So what themes can I see in my new story? Well, for a start there’s a real favorite. It’s a Beauty and the Beast tale to its bootlaces. Gideon has suffered an appalling ordeal in India and he’s returned to England haunted by the ghosts of his past. Hero with a curse on him? Tick! Charis has only her courage and her love to help her save him. Brave heroine who brings the Beast back to his real self? Tick!
Another classic is the marriage of convenience. I bet we’ve all read plenty of those, where the hero and heroine are forced together to sort out their problems by the fact that they’ve said “I do.” In a historical, the marriage of convenience is even more powerful because divorce wasn’t readily available at the time. When Gideon rashly pledges himself to protect the injured woman he stumbles upon in a stable in Winchester, he has no idea that his promise will eventually compel him to marry Charis to keep her safe from her greedy and violent stepbrothers.
Then there’s an elopement! Going back at least to PRIDE AND PREJUDICE, the elopement, usually to Gretna Green but in this case, to the Channel Islands, has been a mainstay of romantic fiction.
Another mainstay of romance fiction, at least since King Arthur and his buddies, is the knight in shining armor hero. Gideon is definitely one of those. He’s a man of honor. He’s brave and good and self-sacrificing and protective – and one of Charis’s problems is that she has to make him see beyond that code of ethics if he’s to have a chance of happiness. I do love a knight in shining armor!
You can read an excerpt of CAPTIVE OF SIN here: http://www.annacampbell.info/captivesin.html
So let’s talk favorite romance themes. Do you have any? Look at the book you’re reading now. Does it include any favorite romance themes? Have you seen an interesting twist lately on any of the classic romance themes?
I’ve got TWO prizes for people who comment today. The first is a signed copy of CAPTIVE OF SIN. The second is Australia’s second weapon for world domination, a packet of Tim Tams. They are the world’s greatest cookie – seriously! You can find out more about Tim Tams here: http://www.ilovetimtamcookies.com
Good luck!
Hi Anna – thanks for visiting with us today! I have to say that both prizes are equally tempting! 😉
As for themes… I really like the “friends to lovers” theme – and it can be stretched. Just if the hero/heroine knew each other before the beginning of the romance – they didn’t have to actually be friends.
And for category romances :X I like the boss-secretary romance, or office romance, even though I think it’s skeezy in real life. And there are so many more… but I have to go to work 😛
Congratulations on the new release!
Hi Lime! I didn’t know this was your home on the web! Thanks for the welcome. Clearly you ARE a Romance Reader at Heart! 😉
I love the friends to lovers theme. Someone who does that beautifully is an Aussie who writes for Blaze and SuperRomance, Sarah Mayberry. Actually I hate to say it, but I’m a sucker for most themes. Love fish out of water and fairytale themes and hatred into love and opposites attract… You name it. If it’s a romance theme, I probably love it! And I must have read a million boss and secretary romances in category – as you say, they never go out of style!
Lol Anne- this isn’t my “home base” I guess that would be The Good, The Bad, The Unread. 😛 Unsure if Fatin would be willing to claim me anyway 😛
I *love* Sarah Mayberry! She’s one of my favorite authors. I read Anything For You, and have been hooked since. 😀 Love the fairy tales and hate to love ones too!
Ha! I would claim you if you wanted. 🙂
I will soon have this book, yay 😀 So no need to enter me there.
But please do enter me for the cookie part, I loooove cookies.
Right now I am reading a UF book and yes there is romance. I do love that. I can read books without it but I am a romantic at heart and to want that too.
As for romance themes, well I can’t say. There are so many, and some annoy me even though I should like them. I never know.
But yes, poor maiden rescued by a knight in shining armour, gotta love that. The couple from different background who love each other and gotta fight for their love..and more.
Ooh, forgot the class difference romance. And I’ve written one of those in Claiming the Courtesan and My Reckless Surrender, my June 2010 release, has elements of that. I love it when the couple really have to work hard to surmount the barriers between them and the class thing definitely works for that, particularly in a historical. Actually I like Romeo and Juliet stories too! Told you I liked ’em all! Blodeuedd, you’re in the draw for the cookies! Hope the postie pigeon brings you COS soon!
I have a ton of favorite romance themes but some would be a master and servant(not always obedient) and a boss and his secretary
Jeanette, sound like you go with Blodeuedd and me about the class difference being something that works for you in a romance. And I agree – I love to see the woman stand up for herself. Actually I like it when it’s turned on its head too and it’s the woman in the position of power and the bloke who has to be saucy 😉
Your book sounds interesting…I do enjoy the “Beauty and the Beast” theme. Thanks for the post.
Thanks, GSM! I didn’t actually recognize that this was a Beauty and the Beast story until a few weeks ago – but of course it is! Seems I can’t get away from that particular fairytale. Do you know the myth of Psyche and Cupid? I actually think it’s a beautiful love story and it’s really BATB revisited as a Greek myth. I think these basic stories can be so powerful!
Ahhh the variety of themes… love the choices out there to enjoy… some of my favs are badboy turned good, the white knight, & storylines with babies! 😀
Hi Colleen! Ooh, forgot bad boy turned good. I love those too – and they’re basically a redemption story as well. Love it when the bad boy shows those subtle signs that he’s not really as bad as he makes out. Always works for me. And babies are a perennial!
I enjoy the reunion stories, friends to lovers, rich man poor woman, royalty & commoner, law enforcement, and just about anything really. I just love reading romance.
Linda, I just finished a great romantic suspense by Pamela Clare and I was thinking how the woman in jeopardy is such a great theme in romance. There’s two varieties (at least). One where her protector is a man forced into being a hero by circumstances and he has to draw on all the hidden parts of himself to keep his beloved safe. The other is where he’s in the business of keeping people safe (you know, the cop, soldier, secret agent heroes who proliferate!) but this time it’s different because he’s personally involved. Love all that! Sounds like you’re like me – any theme will do! 😉
Hi Anna! Wonderful blog, as always! Hi RR@Her’s! :>
I’m with GSM in loving the Beauty and Beast theme as well as friends to lovers. :>
I’m also going to tag right along with Linda and say that I love all of them! Ha!
HOOOORAAAAY on Captive of Sin! It’s waiting for me…I know it is. Surely TODAY they’ll have it at the B&N!!!
Grins,
Jeanne
Jeanne, fingers crossed for Captive of Sin being there! I want to introduce you to Gideon! 😉 It always amuses me when people who don’t read romance deride these classic themes as signs that all romances are the same when in fact they’re one of the things that keeps us coming back to the genre. We love to see these themes embroidered and twisted and elaborated upon.
Hi Anna,
wonderful blog! My favorite theme is Beauty and the Beast, I love those tortured heroes, and right now I’m reading a medieval romance with one.
No need to enter me for the book, I hope to have it soon, but I’d love some Tim Tams!
Eva, you’re definitely in the draw for the Tim Tams. YUMMMMM!!!! It’s odd how tortured heroes are such a staple of romance, isn’t it? I’m going to do a blog about that early next week for Nalini Singh. I’ll let you know when it’s up. I’d love your insights. And the Beast is the ultimate tortured hero, isn’t he? Thanks for swinging by!
Hi Anna! As Jeanne said, wonderful blog as usual! I do love a Beauty and the Beast theme but then I can’t think of a theme I hate!
Tomorrow is my Border’s day! They had better have a copy of Captive of Sin.
Christie, fingers crossed for COS!!!! Actually I think most of us love MOST themes. Even if I think I don’t like a theme – there was a while there where I was sick of vampires, but then I read J.R. Ward and vamps were back in favor – if I come across someone who’s done it well, that theme gets the thumbs up from me! Thanks for swinging by from the lair!
I love a Beauty and the Beast theme too! I also like royalty and commoner themes as well.
Raelena, I’ve noticed the royalty thing is getting more and more popular. Princes and Princesses all over the shop! I’m not surprised – although I’m the same age as Princess Diana and I remember watching her wedding and thinking I wouldn’t do what she was doing for quids. Still nice in the fantasy version, huh? Thanks for swinging by!
Hi Anna and RRAH!
I love reading romance – any theme! But I have an extra soft spot for reunion stories…. and friend-to-lover stories….. and marriage-of-convenience stories…. and kinght-in-shining-armour stories… and Cinderella stories …. and… well, you get the idea! The more I think about it the harder it is to pin myself down!
Your readers are in for a treat with Gideon and Charis’s story, Anna! As someone who’s been lucky enough to have a preview read, I can say it’s seriously gorgeous.
🙂
Sharon
Sharon, you deserve your mention in the dedication! Thanks so much for being such a great friend and such a great crit partner. So glad you loved Gideon and Charis’s story! Yeah, I’m like you. I narrow it down to themes I really like and then suddenly I’m thinking of 100 others! I really love Ugly Duckling stories too – there’s something so satisfying in those!
Morning, Anna!
I’m a sucker for fish-out-of-water themes too. You can get a lot of mileage out of heroines who bumble way out of their comfort zones. I’m also fond of role-reversals. I recently saw ‘The Promotion’, in which Sandra Bullock plays a career-driven editor with a male personal assistant. He’s not exactly an alpha but he does eventually stand up to her.
Hiya Vanessa! Lovely to see you here. I’ve got The Promotion on my list to see. I think she’s great at romantic comedy. I think fish out of water stories are great too – both for comedy and drama. Even something as classic as Robyn Carr’s Virgin River is actually a fish out of water story – city nurse takes a job in a tiny, isolated town in the mountains.
Hi, Anna–Wow, that’s lots of themes in one book, but I can see how they all fit. I like marriages of convenience, as well as the subset of that, marriages required by honor after a “compromise.” Beauty and the beast is always great fun.
So is rescue, when a character doesn’t just have a particular conflict with the other lead character but is so scarred that he or she doesn’t expect ever to love anyone again. As with Olivia in Tempt the Devil. And Cinderella stories hold great appeal.
Captive of Sin is sitting here, waiting for me, and I’m eager to get to it.
Nancy, the weird thing is I didn’t pick up on any of these ping moments while I was writing it. In fact, I kept think how I’d describe what is quite a complex plot when I had to talk about the book – and I really don’t like giving out too much info for fear of spoilers. Then suddenly I thought, MOC. And then gradually I realized all these other romance tropes were there as well. Shows you how instinctive all this stuff can be, doesn’t it? I love Cinderella stories. My critique partner Annie West writes a doozy of a Cinderella story! Hope you enjoy COS and thanks for mentioning Olivia in TTD – she really did have a hard row to hoe, didn’t she?
Hi Anna, first off let me say I love your books and I can’t wait to get my hands on your new one CAPTIVE OF SIN, so congrats on your new release.
I like a little of everything in a books different themes. I love themes when someone from the past comes back into your life, like a friend to lover type of theme. Also the Beauty and the Beast themes are great too.
Hey, QL, thanks for saying those lovely things! Hope you get to Gideon and Charis soon! Reunions are a staple of romance, aren’t they, and it’s a story that always gets me in too. There’s something so powerful about people who have made mistakes in the past getting it right this time round. Thanks for swinging by!
Hi, Anna, great topic!
I’m with Jeanne on my two favorite themes — Beauty and the Beast and Friends to Lovers.
I love the tortured hero, the man who’s so damaged by his past that he feels unworthy of the heroine’s love. Mind you, he must be redeemable and not totally screwed up or the story won’t work.
The second theme is friends to lovers is a favorite too. I love the idea of finding someone, making him your best friend and then falling in love. Who better knows your lover than you then?
Jo, sounds like CAPTIVE OF SIN will definitely be on your wavelength! I love friends to lovers partly because taking on the love bit really puts the friendship at risk. I’ve recently become addicted to Bones with David Boreanaz. Yeah, I know – do I need to say more than DB? But one of the thing they’re doing really well is how Bones and Booth don’t want to do anything about their simmering attraction because the friendship is actually the strongest pillar of their lives.
Marriage of convenience stories are one of my favorite types of stories. I have read so many different types of these stories and I am still enjoying them very much.
Maureen, so glad you’re another marriage of convenience fan. I think those classic themes like MOC and Beauty and the Beast will never go out of style. I’ll certainly never get sick of reading about them. They’re such a rich vein of ore for a writer to mine! Thanks for swinging by.
Hi Fatin! Hi everyone, and especially hello, Anna.
It never surprises me, Anna, when you write Beauty and the Beast books. It seems to be your theme and you do them so wonderfully. Sigh. For anyone wondering about this new book, CAPTIVE OF SIN, I can say I’ve read it and it’s a ripper (in Australian parlance that means ‘fantastic’). So intense, so powerful, such great characters. I loved Gideon and his honorable attempts to do the right things, his knife-edge tug of war between duty and desire. This is a book that will keep you turning pages till very late, just because you must find out what happens.
I’m thrilled too that you’ve ventured into the marriage of convenience at last. That’s one of my fave themes of all. In fact, now I think about it my last story was definitely a MOC. I’ll always check out a book with that theme. Other faves of mine include fish out of water stories and that perennial, Cinderella. Now, if we could combine all three…!
Annie
Annie! Have missed seeing you around the ‘net…where have you been? 🙂
Mad, she’s been writing more fantastic stories for us to read. The December release in the US, BLACKMAILED BRIDE, INEXPERIENCED WIFE is a corker!!!!
Hey, thanks, Annie! Don’t you just love that war between duty and desire? It’s something that always works for me. Hey, yet another theme for CAPTIVE OF SIN!!!! I think you do beautiful marriage of convenience stories. I loved Dario and Alissa’s story in BLACKMAILED BRIDE, INEXPERIENCED WIFE. Just a perfect MOC story – and all that emotional tension (not to mention the sexual tension) of how they work it all out. Sigh! I actually think Cinderella is your basic story the way BATB is mine. Interesting, isn’t it?
Hi Anna, I’d say I like most of themes, but do seem to like marriage of convenience stories, beauty and the beast, and, of course, the tortured bad boy who gets redeemed (even if only somewhat, lol).
Yeah, Pam, we don’t want that bad boy getting TOOOO good, do we? We still want to keep the old fire! I hear you. Sounds like we have similar taste in romance themes (and bad boys!). Thanks for swinging by!
Hi Anna 🙂 What a great story – I’m so excited that COS is out now!!!
My favorite themes are The Ugly Duckling (any kind of makeover story) and Friends to Lovers. Both are such powerful ways to reframe and reconsider the beauty that’s already there within the characters, which is always inspiring to read.
Tawny, I love Ugly Duckling stories. The book I just started has that theme although guess what? BATB raises its lovely head yet again! But definitely elements of a makeover story there too – love it. Love that “Why you’re beautiful, Miss Jones” moment, no matter how corny it is! Thanks for swinging by, my Bandita friend!
Hi Anna,
Congrats on the new release. I think of Loretta Chase’s “Lord of Scoundrels” as a Beauty and the Beast type story.
Thanks for swinging by cyclops! I adore Lord of Scoundrels and to me it’s the quintessential Beauty and the Beast story. Doesn’t Loretta Chase do a beautiful job of creating Dane in that story? Yum!!!!
I love the friends to lovers theme.
Captive of Sin sounds like a great read.
Thanks so much, Estella. I haven’t done a friends to lovers story yet. I’d love to write one!
I just bought this book today. So don’t enter me. I just wanted to stop by and say Hi.
I love your writing.
hugs,
WendyK
Wendy — Will you read it soon? I’m hoping we’ll be meeting at the bookstore this Friday. Will you be there? I have my copy of Anna’s book too so want to do a buddy read and discuss it when we meet for the book club?
Mad, hope you enjoy COS too!
Ohhh that’d be cool!!! I will try my best to read it by Friday(if DH will stop with the errands that MUST be done this minute or life will end)
I plan to be there this Friday, I miss it!
hugs,
WendyK
Hey, Wendy, thanks so much. I hope you enjoy Captive of Sin! He’s one of my favorite heroes 😉
Hi Anna,
I’m sure I will!
hugs,
WendyK
Anna,
Just dropping by to say MEGA CONGRATULATIONS! Just heard that your ‘Captive of Sin’ has been named one of Publishers Weekly’s best 100 books of 2009!!!!!!!!!!!! Wow. What an achievement. Take a bow, madam.
Annie
Congrats, Anna!!
Thanks, Mad! Lovely surprise!
Thanks for shouting out the news, Annie. I’m still slightly shell shocked! Lovely news to wake up to this morning! Go, Gideon and Charis!
By the way, did you see you were getting some love in an earlier post? I was gloating about the fact that I get to see your books before anyone else 😉
Hey Anna.
My favorite themes are beauty and the beast stories, cinderella/ugly duckling stories, friends to lovers, friend of sibling/childhood crush, bad boys that really arent that bad/good girls that arent that good. I’m really not that picky but there are some themes I just cant enjoy no matter how much I try.
Congrats on the publisher’s weekly pick!
Thanks, Calila! I’m going to raise a glass to Publishers Weekly when I stop for lunch, believe me! Perhaps TWO! Hic! Oh, I’d forgotten the childhood crush story. I love Sabrina although it has a twist that it’s not her crush she ends up with. Love good girls who aren’t really that good either – what a great way to put it! Isn’t romance a delicious genre?
I like many romance themes but especially beauty and the beast themes… they’re just so compelling! And I’m a huge Anna Campbell fan!
Hey, etirv, great to see you! Those pictures gave me such a thrill – they were the first ones I saw of the book actually in a store. Sometimes it’s tough to be in Australia when your book’s in the US! And thanks so much for saying you’re a fan!
I forgot to say Aloha, Anna! Glad you liked the photos of CoS at Borders Honolulu! It looks great!
Hi, Anna.
What is your opinion on book trailers? Do you think they help in book sales?
Thanks.
Tracey, what an interesting question. I love to look at them. I’m not sure how many extra books they sell. Having said that, my lovely friend Vanessa gave me a wonderful surprise present when she put together a trailer for CAPTIVE OF SIN. I’ve never had a trailer before and I must say it made me feel a bit like a movie star to have one. So from a writer’s point of view, I have to say I think they’re cool 😉 Here’s the Youtube link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTsRuTIYBaM
I love paranormal romance, and great historical’s! I love reading stories where the hero is dark and tormented until a woman that he has no use for rescues him and makes him love 🙂
I love tortured hero’s and strong heroine’s.
Ooh, Becky, think you might like Captive of Sin, then! Definitely got a strong heroine and a tortured hero in this one! Thanks for swinging by!
I like the tortured hero theme and the brother best friend and sister theme. Did that make any sense?? It’s only 6:45 and I have lost all ability to think.
I laughed at your response, Carriez. I started answering this blog VERY early this morning. I hope my anwers made sense too! I like that theme of suddenly discovering something that’s been under your nose all the time – so yeah, brother’s best friend and sister work for me too.
I love when the hero or heroine are disguised in some way from the other, like in Johanna Lindsey’s Gentle Rogue, when Georgina joins James crew as a cabin boy. It really created some interesting situations.
Deidre
Deidre, blog hopping can sometimes be VERY entertaining. I just read about your liking for JL over on Writers at Play where I’m also blogging today. http://www.writersatplay.com/wordpress/?p=1492#comment-23748
Actually I love a disguise plot. I use mistaken identity quite a lot and definitely make use of people seriously misunderstanding the other person’s purposes and ethics. Makes for good fun, I think!
I just picked up your book at Borders this weekend but would love to win a signed copy!!! Can’t wait to read it!!!
Hi Mitzi. Thanks so much for picking up Captive of Sin! You’re definitely in the draw – and don’t forget the Tim Tams, yum!
Hi Anna,
Happy to ‘see’ you here. And congrats on the publisher’s weekly pick!
Beauty and the best is my favorite theme. I’ve been waiting for your pigeon to arrive at my home with COS. Hope he didn’t miss the turn to my home:) and I’m so interested with the Cookies, please share with me some Anna ;D
Mariska, I loaded up that pigeon and sent him on his way yesterday. Think it might take a few days to get to you yet! Treat him nice when he gets to you – he’s been busy lately! Thanks so much for the Publishers Weekly congrats. I’m so thrilled about that – it’s fantastic news. Good luck for the cookies! Wonderful to see another BATB fan!
I have several favorite themes. I love friends to lovers, “cabin romances,” and the classic “Beauty & The Beast” theme.
I’ve heard good things about your book, Anna, and I love “wounded heroes” (another favorite theme!), so it sounds excellent!
Thanks for the contest!
Ooh, Karen, cabin romances, I forgot those. I LOVE them. I think in a lot of ways, Claiming the Courtesan is a cabin romance. Untouched definitely is, with the two of them trapped on that estate together. Seriously, if you like wounded heroes, I think I might be your gal 😉 Good luck in the draw!
Looks like Captive in Sin is going to be HAWT off the press. Can’t wait to get my hands on it. Thanks for the excerpt.
Hi Teonda! Thanks for swinging by and good luck in the draw. Love the idea of COS being ‘hawt’ off the presses! Yee ha!
Hi, Fatin! Hi, Anna! One of my favorite themes is a second chance at love. I so enjoy the fantasy of the one that got away. Done well, a reunion story can be the most heartwarming type of romance. Plus, the conflict is guaranteed, because the lovers rarely ever parted on good terms. Throw in a secret baby and it’s practically perfect! *g*
Ooh, the good old secret baby! We haven’t talked about that theme, have we? Wow, there’s so many themes in romance, isn’t there, Caren? I agree with you about a reunion romance – there’s automatically so much at stake.
A favorite theme for me is really anything that is supernatural and romance. My two favorite qualities in a book 🙂 But I also love a good best-friends-who-are-in-love romance. Those are always sweet!
Chelsea, you’re certainly not alone in your interest in the supernatural! Paranormals are so popular right now. Personally I’ll read anything – it’s the story and the characters that drag me in. Best friends books are great, aren’t they? Thanks for swinging by.
Fatin, Mad and everyone, thank you so much for a fabulous day’s blogging. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed thinking about all the themes in romance! Yum!
Don’t forget to check back to see who won the signed copy of CAPTIVE OF SIN and the delicious Tim Tams!
Congratulations Anna on the PW listing – what a wonderful tribute to your skills as a writer. I am so proud of you!
I love a Beauty and the Beast story and am looking forward to reading CAPTIVE OF SIN.
I also like stories with animals in them (what a surprise considering what I write!) and I loved your dog in UNTOUCHED.
Let’s see, Beauty & The Beast theme, Friends to Lovers theme, re-united lovers theme. There are so many and I enjoy them all!
Hi, Anna!!! Another vote for the friends-to-lovers, and yes, Sarah Mayberry writes those (and just about everything else!) beautifully! I also like the plain-Jane gets the man story, especially if it doesn’t involve a magical makeover but a change in perspective where the guy’s hooked by her inner beauty 😉
And boy, Tim Tams, huh? Haven’t had those in a while… 😉 Congrats on Captive of Sin–looking forward to reading that, too!
I like reunited lovers, second chance romance themes. Congrats on the new book.
