Caterina Shaw’s days are numbered. Her only chance for survival is a highly experimental gene treatment – a risk she willingly takes. But now Caterina barely recognizes herself. She has new, terrifying powers, an exotic, arresting body — and she’s been accused of a savage murder, sending her on the run.
Mick Carrera is a mercenary and an expert at capturing elusive, clever prey. Yet the woman he’s hunting down is far from the vicious killer he’s been told to expect: Caterina is wounded, vulnerable, and a startling mystery of medical science. Even more, she’s a beautiful woman whose innocent sensuality tempts Mick to show her exactly how thrilling pleasure can be. The heat that builds between them is irresistible, but surrendering to it could kill them both . . . for a dangerous group is plotting its next move using Caterina as its deadly pawn.

Over the past decade of writing and over twenty books, I’ve discovered that I love the bad boys. No not those kinds of bad boys. You know the ones with the tight ripped jeans, leather jackets and motorcycles.
I’m talking about the really really bad boys as in the ones that don’t necessarily seem as if they could ever be good guys. They might have had a brush with the law in the past (or at the current time). They might seem selfish or even unheroic at times.
And despite all that, they are my favorite heroes to write about!
You’re probably wondering why and it’s really quite simple – I like crafting a story that forces that not so nice man to look inside himself and find the hero. Especially when he’s forced to undergo that redemption because he’s been touched by the power of love.
If you think about it, it’s easy being a hero if you have no faults and always make the right choice. But it doesn’t make for a very good story does it? To me it’s important to see a character grow during the story and that’s just not possible with a perfect hero.
On the other hand, imagine a hero who is plagued with doubt and uncertain about what to do. Who has to not only overcome his own personal demons, but also prove to the others in his life that he is worthy. That he has what it takes to rise to the occasion and do the right thing. To become a real hero.
Being able to craft that hero’s journey from darkness to a place filled with love is one of the most rewarding things about writing a book. What’s the other?
Hearing from you that you really loved that tortured hero!

I think everyone loves a bad boy, there is just something about them that you gotta love. I think it may just be there wildness.
I love tortured heroes and it’s especially sweet to see them get their happy ending. After everything they go through they deserve it.
The new book sounds great and I’m hoping the random number genie picks me.
I love torture heroes, and the process they go thru to get their HEA.
Love a tortured hero because he cares enough to be uncertain. He wants to do the right thing.
It’s all about redemption and the journey from dark to light that is so fascinating to read about. And the fact that it’s a romance gives us the dynamic of sexy and stubborn, and falling in love, to really keep things interesting.
Tortured heros are the best! Great post!
Ohhh great post!!! I love tortured heroes. And I have to say I’m LOVING this book. you all have got to read it!!!!
hugs,
WendyK
I enjoyed reading the post and I look forward in reading the book.
Thanks,

I agree completely Ms. Pineiro. Probably why I was so on with the Buffy/Spike pairing rather than Buffy/Angel. Sure Angel was bad, bad, bad before having his soul restored, but said restoration wasn’t his choice. Spike actually chose to be better than he was to be worthy of Buffy’s love. How swoon-worthy is that?
Hi, Caridad,

I am really excited about reading this book. I have so enjoyed all you Calling books.
The cover is so sensual 🙂 I’d love to read the complete story of this ‘tortured hero’.
Caridad! Congrats on the release of this extremely steamy looking yummy read!
I think yes, we like tortured heroes, because really, perfect is boring. Also, the journey to being less-tortured, prefereably with the heroine’s help, is always a good story! Also, I think it makes them more realistic, which is nice to read.
Thanks for the giveaway!

Oh, those bad boys! I love it when they’re the heroes.
Please enter me in the giveaway ~ Thanks!
Oh, I do love a good bad boy! This sounds really good!!
I think the best heroes usually are tortured. They have regrets and things in their past that are hard to get over. In short, they have baggage, but don’t we all? lol
Deidre
tortured hero’s full of angst are very compelling!
I love the tortured heroes best! I just go for all that strong emotion and angst.
So glad you all like them as well! Thanks for dopping by! I really enjoyed reading all your comments.
