In the tradition of The Last of the Mohicans… and honoring the 250th anniversary of the Battle of Ticonderoga…
The sequel to Surrender
Untamed
MacKinnon’s Rangers
They were a band of brothers, their loyalty to one another forged by hardship and battle, the bond between these Highland warriors, rugged colonials, and fierce Native Americans stronger even than blood ties.
Untamed
Though forced to fight for the hated British, Morgan MacKinnon would no more betray the men he leads than slit his own throat—not even when he was captured by the French and threatened with an agonizing death by fire at the hands of their Abenaki allies. Only the look of innocent longing in the eyes of a convent-bred French lass could make him question his vow to escape and return to the Rangers. And soon the sweet passion he awoke in Amalie had him cursing the war that forced him to choose between upholding his honor and pledging himself to the woman he loves.
What is it about Scottish Highlanders that so many readers love? I’m not sure I could answer that question.
Is the accent, a lilt so sexy that it ought to constitute foreplay in and of itself? Is it sight of a man in a kilt and sporran? Or is it the courage and raw strength that characterized Highland culture? Your guess is as good as mine. But one thing’s for certain: romance readers devour Highlanders.
What happens when you take the Highlander out of Scotland and send him halfway around the world to America?
That’s one thing I set out to discover when I started my MacKinnon’s Rangers series. What would happen if, after the defeat at Culloden, a family of Highland Scots found themselves exiled and sent across the sea? What would happen if the parents failed to adapt to their new land, leaving their teenage sons alone on the frontier? Would a neighboring Indian tribe — perhaps the Mahican people — adopt the boys?
Something about that appealed to me—Highland Scots raised by Indians, the warrior culture of Scotland fused with that of the Mahicans. I had visions of tall Scotsmen with long dark hair wearing leather leggings and wampum armbands. I saw the Scottish warrior braids at their temples — and the Mahican warrior marks tattooed into their skin.
And I said, “Yum.”
And so Iain, Morgan and Connor MacKinnon came into being.
Of course, I couldn’t send them off into the wilderness alone, so Joseph Aupauteunk, their Mahican adoptive brother is with them. So are fellow Highlanders McHugh, Dougie, Brandon, and Forbes and stubborn Irishman Killy — all of them exiled, all of them raised on the frontier.
As I studied the history of the period and the world surrounding my Rangers began to take shape, I was surprised to find how at home they seemed beside the Mahican walking through the thick forest of Colonial New York. It’s exactly that quality that drew Lord William Wentworth to the MacKinnon brothers — their ability to fight on the frontier and to survive. It’s why he coerced them into fighting for Britain, giving them the choice between death at the gallows or commanding a Ranger unit.
Iain MacKinnon’s story is told in Surrender, my March 2006 release. Today is the official release date of Untamed. I’ve loved writing this series in part because the history fascinates me and because Iain, Morgan, Connor, Joseph and their men never cease to entertain me. Not that the books are light and funny, mind you. There is some humor involved, particularly when the Rangers are on a mission or hunkered down around a fire together.
But the New York frontier in 1759 was one of the most dangers places on earth, testing the mettle of these brave Scotsmen and their Indian allies. I’ve tried to create heroes that match their environment, bringing them together with women whose feminine courage and strength makes them worthy of such warriors. I hope you enjoy the results.
In the meantime — and just for the sake of fun — tell me what you like about Highlanders. What draws you to them? And if you had to take them out of Scotland and set their story in another place, where would you put them?
*****Leave a comment for the chance to win a copy of UNTAMED! Good Luck! 🙂
WOW, now this is a series I could definitely get into. I love the idea of Highlanders and Indians together. What a great mix! And why is it I haven’t heard of them before??!!
What draws me to Highlanders? Well, your cover pretty much says it all. LOL! That is a part of it though. I do believe it is the strength (physically, mentally, and spiritually) that just exudes from them.
This sounds great! Can’t wait to get my copy to read!
You nailed at least two of the reasons I love Highlanders. One – their accent. Two – their courage and raw strength. Those two things appeal to me on a variety of levels. However, the one thing that, for me, really draws me to Highlanders is their fierce independence and protectiveness of those important to them.
I love love love the cover! 😀 I guess I should also mention that the book sounds like a great read too! hehe 😀
Did i mention I love the cover? haha 😀
I think I’m missing out. I really need to read some highlanders. Based upon the covers they are very yummy!
With what i know about highlanders, if you took them out of Scotland – the only place you could put them would be whereever they want.
However – I’m basing my answer on Duncan McCloud, from the tv show The Highlander. 🙂 If these highlanders are like him – I need to get to reading.
Hi, Buffie — There’s something about mixing those two cultures that does it for me, too. As for why you haven’t heard about it — this is only the second book of the series and I’m a newer author with only five total historical novels.
Hi, Tammy G — I hope you enjoy the story. And thanks!
Hi, Karin — Yes, that accent. I swear it makes me weak in the knees! I love that protectiveness, too. The independence is something I also associate with Native culture, and that’s another reason I think they mix well. 🙂
I’m at work on a press deadline and checking in as often as I can…
Hi Pamela:
The cover for your book is totally hot! Just as I would imagine a “Highlander”, to be!
Your story sounds wonderful. What attracts me to Highlander’s is certainly their sensuality in the stories and they are almost always an “Alpha” that needs to be tamed by a strong heroine which I also like. lol
Where would I put one if not in Scotland? How about on a sailing ship on an exciting voyage. Nothing like being alone with a Highlander for an extended ocean voyage. *ggg*
Best Regards
Lea
LOL, Greta! I think you’re right — you put Highlanders where they want to be put. Another Duncan fan! I love that series! Getting the entire thing on DVD was the highlight of 2004. 🙂 (BTW, my niece’s name is Greta.)
Hi, Lea — Your comment about a sailing vessel made me think about the fact that, without realizing it, I associate Highlanders with “fierce” nature. I guess perhaps that’s due to the ruggedness of the Highlands. They seem very outdoorsy to me.
Nice to talk with you both!
Pamela
Hi, Danielle! I missed you in there. I’m glad you like the cover. Me too! The art for it has been my wallpaper for months, and I don’t feel like taking it down! Speaking of which…
On the “Fun Stuff & Extras” page of my website, you can download wallpaper made from the raw art for this cover. So if you like this sexy man, he’s there for you! 😉
Pamela
Hi Pamela!
What a great question! I think what I like best about highlanders is their absolute refusal to give up. It seems that all your Highland men are stubborn to the core – they know exactly what they want, they know they can get it, and nothing is going to stop them. That level of sheer, utter confidence can make a girl swoon!
Can’t wait to read Untamed – it’s going to be awesome
haleigh
Hi Pamela. What I like about Highlanders is that they are strong, fierce alpha males. Love the cover of Untamed.
*waving* Hi Pamela!
Where I would put them? Any place that’s wild and rugged. (you know me: that is not the first answer that came to my mind but for once I’ll try to behave)
What I like about Highlanders, and here I’m answering with Iain and Morgan (and Connor) in mind, is the way they are protective of what is dear to them. Fierce warriors with a sense of humor. ( I loved the banter between the Rangers) And their loyalty too. More than a nice six-pack, that’s what makes them sexy to me. Oh and I love when they speak Gaelic to Annie or Amalie. So sexy!
stef
The accent. The abs? 😀 That counts right??
OH! and what’s under their kilt!
Natasha A.
Hi Pamela,
Happy Release Day. I’ve had a thing for Highlanders since reading Julie Garwood’s “The Bride.” Highlanders make great alpha heroes and they look so sexy in their kilts.
OH! I am heading there now… hehe 😀
I just downloaded it… 😀 I also just added you on myspace!
Niiiiice cover! Excuse the drool… Love those guys in kilts! 😀 But I love their accents more! YUMMY!!!!
Hi, Crystal — Mmmm, alpha males! They can be jerks sometimes, but when they fall in love and go all gentle over some woman… ::swoon!:: I think a lot of readers are beginning to associate bullying with alpha males, which is too bad. I like a strong, protective man — and I try to write heroes who fall into that category — but not domineering bullies. And thanks for your kind words! I love it!
Hi, Natasha — What’s UNDER the kilt. No one has mentioned that yet. And, yeah, I have to admit I’m interested in that, too. I cannae lie! 😉
Hi, Cyclops8 — Thanks so much! I met Julia Garwood in an airport once when our flights were delayed, and she is such a nice woman! I love her historicals. And you’re right… Highlanders are natural alphas.
LOL, Danielle — That was fast! I’m glad you like it! Feel free to spread it around. And try not to drool on your computer too much! 😀
Hi, Colleen — I’d had you a napkin but that’s a bit hard on the Internet. And I so agree! That accent… Like I said, it’s foreplay in and of itself — a full 30 minutes worth. I interviewed members of my favorite traditional Scottish band, and just listening to them answer my questions made me melt. I listen to a lot of traditional 15th through 19th-century Scottish music when I write to get me in the right frame of mind.
WOW I REALLY WANT THIS BOOK!!! I looooooove reading about Highlanders, I love Scotland so much I actually just go back from a trip there.
please enter me into this contest, I hope I win this book (fingers crossed)
xoxo
I think the Highlanders are appealing because I think of them as tough since they would have to be to survive where they live. I also think family is very important to them which is a very appealing trait and then, of course, there’s the accent.
too late… 😀 haha j/k… though i think i just caught my grandma drooling….
Love the cover. Men in kilts *sigh* I love reading about Highlanders. They are strong and virile and just make me drool.
How did I miss this series?
I think you could put a Highlander anywhere and he would adapt.
I think what draws me to a Highlander is the strenght, the bod, and the loyalty to fellow Highlanders.
I guess I should stop drooling and answer the questions haha…
What draws me to them is that they’re a package of steamy goodness… haha… well they are that and more… im gonna have to also say how loyal they are… 😀
As far as putting them in another place… I can’t really decide on one place… there are just so many great places… *sigh*
Hey, Stef! Nice to see you here! One of my favorite parts of writing the stories is the banter between the men themselves — the teasing, the insults. That comes from the bond between them and their sense of loyalty, like brothers ribbing each other. And the protectiveness — yes! You’ve actually read both books. 🙂
Hi, Becky — Lucky you! I’ve never been to Scotland, though I have seen most of the rest of Europe. I am determined to get there one day. And good luck in the contest!
Hi, Maureen — TOUGH. That’s a great word to describe them. When you watch Rob Roy or William Wallace and his men running up and down the hills of the Highlands, that’s the word that comes to mind. And that’s another reason why I really felt that having this group of Rangers come from the Scottish Highlands was so perfect. Imagine how this continent used to be — there are stories of soldiers getting lost in the forest less than a mile from their own forts, never to be seen again. So what kind of man does it take to survive in the wilderness. A tough man!
Danielle, you crack me up! LOL! I like that: “steamy goodness.”
Hi, Brandy — Thanks! We’re going through the bibs and paper towels today with all this drooling. 🙂
Hi, Estella — Well said! I totally agree — strength, loyalty, adaptability. As for missing this series, I’m just glad you found it now!
I would say their fierce warrior mentality and who doesn’t love a man with the integrity to stand by his code of honor? (Something that is severely lacking in so many modern people). There’s this need amongst the Scottish Highlander’s to do every/anything necessary to protect their families and friends. I don’t care what era we’re talking about, that kind of loyalty will *always* be sexy! Can’t wait to read the books Pamela. 😀
pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee enter me,
wowzaaaathe book AND cover is HOT
It’s really hard to describe why I think Highlanders are so hot. They just seem to epitomize masculinity. I think of them as strong, brave, and muscular. And I love a sexy accent.
I really love the cover for Untamed. Congrats on the release, Pamela!
OHHH I love HIGHLANDERS!!!!!Why? I have no idea.LOL The accent, the brawn, the loyalty, the looks, the mystery, the touches of paranormal, the well all of it. There is just something magical about a highlander. If I had to take them out of Scotland? I’d put them in NC. We have our own highland games and many many areas that are said to be similar to Scotland.
Your books sounds great!!!
hugs,
WendyK
Hi, Catie — I really love what you wrote about integrity and honor. I’ve met men who probably had no idea what those two concepts entail. I love really strong men, and part of being strong, IMHO, is being able to live up to your own sense of honor. I think that’s one thing readers like about historicals — the old-fashioned sense of honor in both the hero and the heroine. That’s part of what makes them romantic, isn’t it? And thanks! I hope you enjoy them!
Hi, Blackroze — Okaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay, you’re entered! LOL! 🙂 Yeah, I keep staring at the cover too. I’ve stared at it for about five months.
Thanks, Lori Ann. Nice way to put it — they epitomize masculinity. They sure do! Don’t forget about the downloadable wallpaper. 😉
Highlandlove, I think just your online name gives away how you feel about Highlanders. There are certainly a lot of Scots in your region. I’ve heard of the Highland Games there. We’ve got a Scottish festival (not specifically Highland) in Estes Park up in the mountains. Every year I swear I’m going to go, and every year I’m behind on my book and end up staying at home to write. D’oh! Hugs to you, too!
Pamela
You know – it’s odd. I love Highlanders. I really do – but books for/with them seem to be hit or miss for me. :X Dare I say that? Maybe it’s just what I’ve read – but it’s how I feel. Then again some of my favorite books are Highlander ones.
Also – I LOVE Pamela Clare’s contemporaries, as an aside 😛
Sounds great! Their kilts and their accents. lol
Hi Pamela. What draws me to the Highlanders is that they are fierce and all male, all-out protective of their women and their clans, a strong sense of honor, and oh, so, passionate.
Hey, Limecello! Fun to see you here! You know, with something that’s as popular as Highlanders, there are bound both good representations that you like and some not-so-skilled ones that annoy you. Given the sheer number of romance authors who include Highlanders, you’re bound to see that range. Everything from how they’re characterized to how the author handles the dialect is bound to make an impression of some kind. And thanks for your words about the I-Team series. I’m hard at work on NAKED EDGE right now. 🙂
Hi, Amy S — Thanks! Kilts and accents. Absolutely!
PamP — (Nice name, by the way!) Passionate! That’s the first time we’ve seen that word, isn’t it. I love that word! Absolutely — loyal, courageous, fierce, strong, and very passionate! Where can I find one of those???
Thanks, everyone!
Pamela
I love me some highlanders and I am not sure why. I think it maybe where they are so rugged and untamed. Also I love their accent. They all seem to be handsome. I think I would like to bring a highlander home with me.
That makes two of us, Quilt Lady. I would love to bring a nice untamed (<—nice word!) Highlander home! I bet I’d never have to stack firewood by myself again! That’s a nice fantasy. 🙂
I used to quilt before writing ate up all of my spare time. What kind of quilts (which pattern) do you like to make most? I did lots of log cabin quilts because, well.. it was the only pattern I knew.
Pamela
Oh I’d love to read this MIK! 😀 Love to be in the contest Pamela!
Gosh, they are so resisting! I have SURRENDER on my keepers shelf and looking forward to this one! I remember a guy in chat that word kilts and when we asked what was under his kilt, he said ‘his dignity” LOL. That was what he always answered.
I too always wanted to go to Scotland if there was anyplace I’d ever go (because I hate to fly and I think its the only way there, LOL. There’s something about reading castles within the stories too. I can so picture them and only been in one castle and that was on an island at 1000 Islands in Alexandra Bay NY and its a beautiful love story about that castle but its the closest I got to Scotland!
Hi Caffey — I’m so glad you enjoyed SURRENDER. That was a while ago, wasn’t it? I love that guy’s response: “My dignity.” Indeed! His pride, too, no doubt. 🙂
I’d love to see Scotland, as well. Think of it this way: when we run out of oil, sail boats will be all the rage again and you can get there the old-fashioned way. 😉
I’m guessing Alexandra Bay is closer to Scotland than some people get. At least you have your imagination to help you out; a lot of people don’t even have that!
Pamela
Congratulations on the release of Untamed!
What I love about Highlanders is the brogue, the kilts, the abs and the total alpha-ness. And I might like to see Highlanders in the Alaskan frontier, maybe around the gold rush time period.
Please don’t enter me in the drawing ~ I’m getting my copy tomorrow. : )
there just that something special about a highlander.
There accent.they way they protect there own.
there charm.and strenth,.kilts, pride ,
the pride they have for there homeland.
I like that they are usually rugged, manly alpha male types. It could be fun to put a highlander in a similarly rugged environment or in a more refined setting. I think either scenario could work. By the way, I loved SURRENDER and UNTAMED looks like it will be spectacular too!
Hi, Leslie — Oooh! The Alaskan frontier! That’s an interesting idea. They’d certainly make great backwoodsmen. Great idea. And thanks so much! I hope you enjoy the story. Please send me an email or stop by my blog and let me know what you think of it!
Hi, Peggy — They’re just the total package aren’t they? Pride for their homeland… I don’t think anyone’s mentioned that yet. Good thoughts!
Hi, Zara — That’s exactly what led me to put them on the frontier, in addition to the fact that the DID come here. I’m so glad to hear that you enjoyed SURRENDER. I hope you feel that UNTAMED is a worthy sequel. Thanks so much!
Hi Pamela, I have done some Log Cabin quilts before too. I made one a couple of years ago for my sister for Christmas. I enjoy doing the Lone Star and it is a difficult one to do but I like the challenge. I plan on making a few baby Lone Stars after the hollidays just to keep around for gifts. My sister does a lot of Wedding Ring quilts but I don’t get into doing those. I have made several different patterns. Thank goodness for quilt books.
Hi, Pamela!
Well, lemme think… some twenty and change years ago I fell in love with Duncan Maxwell, from Elizabeth Lowell’s medieval trilogy (Untamed, Forbidden, Enchanted) and since then Scots in general and highlanders in particular hold a special place in my heart.
People from harsh places tend to be more self reliant, more assertive, take charge if you will–and if you add a strong sense of personal honor and integrity, and some sense of humour… well, you have a perfect hero, as far as I’m concerned.
Best of luck with your own Untamed! 😀
Hi, Quiltlady — I’m impressed! Lone Star quilts look very difficult indeed. Wedding Ring quilts, too! But they are amazingly beautiful when they’re finished. I imagine everyone treasures getting one as a gift. Good for you!
Hey, Azteclady! It’s been a while. How are you doing these days? I love Elizabeth Lowell’s historicals. I love the way she uses language. I should track that trilogy down and read it. And I think you’re right that the landscape tends to shape people. I’m guessing that self-reliance and assertiveness and toughness go together in those circumstances. And thanks for your good wishes!
Pamela
Hi, Pamela! Highlanders have quite a number of appeals, as others have mentioned–strength (physical and of character), integrity, courage, and if they look like the guy on your cover, abs 🙂
I liked Greta’s answer of putting them where they have a mind to be, but I also associate them with rugged surroundings, so the high seas, the old West, the wilds of Alaska, or somewhere else equally beautiful yet unforgiving.
Congrats on your latest releases!
I love that the highlanders are clan centered. I have a large and close extended family and can identify with that attitude.
I also love that they are fierce and protective.
As for settings, hum…maybe the Australian Outback. Somewhere still untamed – like the highlanders themselves.
Australian outback! That’s a great idea, Stacie Mc. Of course, a lot of Scots ended up in Australia — a lot a lot a lot of them. I have friends in Western Australia who considering themselves Irish or Scottish, depending. They’ve held on to that heritage. And that’s a very challenging environment, too. I’ve never been there, though I want to visit. Except I won’t go anywhere near the spiders. Not even Steve-o (may he rest in peace!) could entice me into believe that anything with eight legs is “goooorgeous.” LOL!
I think we’re going to draw names soon and have a winner!
Pamela
I like Highlanders because they are so curatious, feirsly protective and they are hot looking.
If they had to leave Scotland I think they should be placed in my backyard, afterall they need to be taught the adapt to the culture 🙂
Hi, Fedora — Thanks so much! Yeah, those abs aren’t bad. Not bad at all! Yum. The wallpaper is on my website if you want it. They do just seem to go with rugged surroundings, don’t they? I like the idea of Scotsmen in the Wild West. You know, it’s funny because I’ve grown up in the Old West, and I’ve never written a western…
(Do you wonder whether modern-day Highland Scots ever find this stuff on the ‘Net and wonder what they must think? LOL!)
Hi, Christa — What a brilliant idea! So you’d offer them a little cultural education? How selfless of you! Why didn’t I think of that? 🙂
Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!
Pamela
“The accent, a lilt so sexy that it ought to constitute foreplay in and of itself?” BINGO!
I absolutely cannot wait to read UNTAMED! Gives me shivers just thinking about it. If I had to take a Highlander out of Scotland, he’d end up in my bed. lol!
Och, I wanna win this book so badly!!!
Och, Mel, lass! You and I are of a mind about that accent. When I interviewed the members of Old Blind Dogs, one of them said that Scottish music and culture are “earthy.” And the way he said “earthy” — kind of “airrrthy” with that lightly rolled R and a very light touch on the “y” — made me shiver. I swear I played it back to myself while transcribing that interview a half dozen times! LOL!
So, stories involving Highlanders outside of Scotland need to be set in your bed. Got it. OK. 🙂
Good luck in the contest!
And, everyone, please remember I’ve got contests going on on my blog, as well. Excerpts too! So come visit at pamelaclare.blogspot.com.
Pamela
come on what warm blood woman wouldnt love to have a man like that please i would leave all to get one of those pluse in a kilt ohhhh yea
If I was writing a Highlander story I would take him to Nova Scotia (New Scotland) where else should he go???
