A night of secret passion could immerse this lawyer in red-hot gossip.

Book 5 of the Jamesville series.

Alicia Flint enjoys her community, her home, and her career as a lawyer. But since her livelihood depends on her spotless reputation, it’s not easy to even date in this small town, much less take a lover.

Then a chance encounter with a stranger at a friend’s wedding tempts her to do something she’s never done before—have a red-hot, one-night stand. The guy will be gone tomorrow; no one need ever know her delicious little secret.

Gill Baron has come to Jamesville to visit friends and figure out what he wants to do with the rest of his life. As a newly retired, burnt-out cop, he’s not looking for love, but he won’t say not to a night of no-strings sex with the seductive brunette. A night that leaves him wanting more.

When she meets the investigator on her latest case, Alicia is shocked to come face-to-face with Mr. One-Night-Stand. Jamesville doesn’t need another lawyer-related scandal to gossip about, but the truth is, she needs Gill’s top-notch investigative skills.

Their attraction is too deep to keep the town clueless of their affair forever. When Jamesville finds out, Alicia wonders if her reputation—and her relationship with Gill—will weather the storm.

Series—Why do we love them so much? What makes us rush to the bookstore, time and time again, for the latest enstallment of our favorite series?

I’m a writer, but I’m a reader first, and I love series. I have a list of all the new series books I have to buy each month. For me, it’s the familiarity of the characters and setting that I enjoy. You get to revisit a city or town that you’ve come to know and see the heroes and heroines from past books. As well, you get to see secondary characters from earlier books have their stories told. It’s fun.

I guess it is the sense of the familiar, of belonging, that makes series so popular. We have already invested our time and emotions in a particular place or group of characters and now we get a chance to find out what they’re up to. The story doesn’t end at the final page of their book. In future books, we catch glimpses of them and the life that they’re living. Series work for all genres: contemporary, paranormals, fantasy, sci-fi, futuristic…you name it, we want more.

But when is it enough.

Invariably some series go on to long. It’s hard to pinpoint exactly where a writer crosses that line, and it seems to be different for each series. Some popular series—like JD Robb’s In Death and Janet Evanovich’s Stepanie Plum—show no signs of slowing down, for which we are all grateful. The authors keep the stories and the characters fresh and intriguing with each new installment.

Other series, which I won’t name, I’ve stopped reading because you can tell that the author has lost interest and it shows.

Personally, I love writing series, but I’m smart enough to know that all good things must come to an end. And that’s okay with me. Whether it’s three books, five books, seven books, or more. I’ll know when a series done and I’ll stop writing it. I’ve got more ideas for series just floating around in my head.

This month, I’ve got two new series books releasing. The first one is A Legal Affair, which is book 5 of the Jamesville series, releasing from Samhain Publishing on July 15th. This series, at its base, is about family and relationships, with some intrigue and danger tossed in a few of the stories for good measure. It’s evolved as I’ve written the books, getting more sensual with each story.

Jackson’s Jewel, book 5 of the Awakening Desires series, is releasing from Ellora’s Cave on July 25th. This is an erotic romance series, which has its basis in desires, and not just sexual ones. All the characters are searching for things in their lives and have to overcome obstacles to reach them.

The last thing Jackson Connors wants is a housekeeper. He likes his life just as it is—solitary and uncomplicated.

Emerald Jewel is a New York designer with a stalker on her trail. She needs a place to hide out and Jackson’s farm is the perfect solution to her problem. The last thing she wants is to be attracted to her sexy new boss.

Neither of them is prepared for the explosion of passion that flares between them. They try to resist, but the desire will not be denied. Jackson knows Emerald’s life is in New York and his is on the farm. He’ll eventually have to let her go, but he’s not about to let her face this threat on her own.

The stalker is getting closer to finding Emerald and will stop at nothing to possess her. As the threat around her escalates, she must face leaving Jackson to draw the danger away from the man she’s coming to love.

I plan two more books for the Jamesville series and maybe one or two more for the Awakening Desires series. Then it will be good-bye to them, at least for the time being.

That’s the nature of series. Eventually they have to end. And sometimes that’s a good thing.

Why do you like series?
