Thank you so much for inviting me here! I love guest blogging. Also love talking about my books. That can be annoying, I know. I apologize in advance. To ease the pain and thank you for dropping by, I’ll be giving away a copy of my current release, HARD AS NAILS, to someone who comments here.
HARD AS NAILS is actually an anthology of three related novellas. The stories center on the rehab of a house in Washington, D.C. It’s a follow-up to the first novella I ever sold (notice how I did not say the first I ever wrote…ahem). The original novella was Hardhats and Silk Stockings in the WHEN GOOD THINGS HAPPEN TO BAD BOYS anthology with Lori Foster and Erin McCarthy. That novella introduced two secondary characters – Cole Carruthers and Adam Thomas. Some readers asked for their stories and, well, who am I to say no. J
I actually considered writing this book as a single title. Problem was, I didn’t know who would be the main hero. See, I had these three guys who all demanded top billing. Men are just like that sometimes. First I had a relaxed-on-the-outside, compulsive-on-the-inside businessman house rehabber, Cole. Then I had Adam, an attorney who spent one amazing night with a woman at a legal conference months before and wanted to find her again. Finally, I had a younger, works-with-his-hands construction foreman with a not-so-blue-collar history who fell hard for a difficult woman and needed to win her over before he went nuts. That’s Ray Hammond.
Really, how is a woman supposed to choose…?
Well, rather than make one poor female soul pick between those guys, I decided I needed three fabulous women to show these men how to be even better men. That meant novellas. Now, I know some folks don’t love novellas. I happen to enjoy them. Still, as an author I kind of want to write things people want to read because the good people at my mortgage company get testy when I try to pay in ARCs instead of cash. Go figure. That meant trying to put the novellas together in such a way that they almost read like a single title.
Are you intrigued yet…? [please say “yes!”]
In the end, I came up with this scenario in the three novellas:
–This Old House: Aubrey Matheson has hunkered down in her aunt’s house. Aubrey isn’t supposed to be there. Cole’s company now owns the house. He’s sent to get Aubrey out…instead he stays in.
–All About Adam: Adam Thomas and Becky Carter met at a boring legal conference. A few drinks later and – Boom! – they missed every lecture. She left the hotel right after. He got ticked. Now they’re on opposite sides of a house sale negotiation.
–Man At The Door: Erin McHugh spent a lifetime in the press thanks to her parents. She’s ready for a little quiet in the new house she bought and is in the process of fixing up. What she’s not ready for is job foreman Ray Hammond who moves in…and never wants to leave.
I hope you enjoy the stories!
Hi HelenKay. Hard as Nails sounds wonderful. I love men who are good with their hands. 😉
I love anthologys myself… one book, 3 hot men and 3 hot storys…what could be better… this one sounds awesome..
I love romances where it’s unclear who the heroine will wind up with, but this set sounds much more satisfying the way you did it because none of these intriguing guys will be left alone! 🙂
I really like anthologies too. All the stories in Hard as Nails sound enjoyable. Looking forward to reading it/them.
Hi HelenKay.
I, for one, love anthologies! More yummy heroes, and more great love stories 🙂
I’m looking for your books now, they have intrigued me that much.
I’m always looking for new to me authors. And I love recommending great new to me authors on all the BB’s I belong to.
Hey HelenKay!! Personally, I absolutely love anthologies. They are great quick reads, which really comes in handy during the summer with the kids are out of school and mommy-ing me to death 🙂 I’ll have to be on the look out for this one. Thanks!
“Are you intrigued yet?”
Actually, I am 😀 even though I’m one of those who rarely like novellas. What can I say? I’ve got my biases just like anyone else.
Best of luck with the release, HelenKay.
Wow HelenKay, those stories have my interest!!! I love novellas… stories can be great even if they are short!!! 😀
Nothing sexier than a guy in a toolbelt, IMO. What a great concept for a novella collection!
Hi HelenKay – Sounds like a great read! I would love to read this one. Good luck with the release!
I like Novella’s and this sounds like one I need to add to my TBP list.
Hi everyone!!!
Crystal – Me too!!! I love the billionaire hero, but I also love the guys who work with their hands. There’s something sexy about each group.
Jolene – Thank you! Like you, I love anthologies. One of the first I ever read was called EVERLASTING LOVE. I picked it up because I was reading Jayne Ann Krentz’s backlist. I found soooo many new authors from this antho. I think that’s where my Linda Howard glom started.
Natalie – That’s exactly what I was thinking. Here we have these three great guys. They each deserve a fabulous woman, right? 🙂
Cheryl -Thank you! I hope you enjoy give it a try.
Crystal G – I love hearing that!!! Thank you. As a reader, I do the same thing. I find a book, love it, and tell everyone.
Buffie – My favorite time to read anthologies is by the pool. You can read a story, dive in, then read another. Hey, maybe I should head to the pool…
azteclady – I’m thrilled if I have you giving the book a second look. Yay!! I do know what you mean by having preferences. I used to say “oh, I really don’t read much paranomal romance.” The real answer was that it was not my favorite thing to read but I have tons of the books and have loved so many. I’m thinking it’s all about voice and execution.
Colleen – Thank you!! I agree. I love short and long. Both work for me.
Janet – I know. I actually thought the cover would have a guy with a toolbelt. How cool would that have been… 🙂
acdaisy77 – Thank you!! I hope you pick it up and enjoy it.
Greta – I have one of those lists. I’m so happy to be on yours.
HelenKay, exactly!
I have said a few times how I don’t usually enjoy short stories, then WHAM! one grabs me by the throat and sweetly says, “oh, really?” and I love it.
Same with romantic comedy, same with paranormals, same with… it is all about voice and execution, indeed.
Hi HelenKay! Yes, I am intrigued! I really loved Hardhats and Silk Stockings – and I can’t wait to read this book. Somehow I didn’t know it was an anthology until a few days ago O_o. I love anthologies – they’ve introduced me to a lot of great authors. I always find myself wanting *more* so it’s nice to read the new to me author’s novels and back lists too. Congratulations on the new release!
Hi HelenKay,
I love your stories in the Bad Boys anthologies. Will there be more in the future?
Hi, HelenKay! I do love anthologies, and I can’t wait to read yours–I’m a sucker for interconnected stories, and I love how yours is like the best of both worlds–interconnected stories by one author so it’s all neatly woven together. And I have Everlasting Love! That WAS a good one!
Hi HelenKay.
I love your blog. It is one of the regular blogs I read. Your newest release sounds very interesting. Great having you visit here.
I am looking forward to reading Hard As Nails!
I love anthologies, and this one sounds really good! 3 stories and 3 guys for the price of one! 😉 Congrats on this release! I look forward to reading It!
Hi HelenKay,
How could I not be intrigued?! Hard as Nails sounds fantastic. I love anthologies and this one is a not to be missed judging by your post! 🙂
I have Nails on my tbr; will be reading it soon. I cannot wait.
I especially enjoy reading novellas in the summer since it is such a busy time.
I enjoy reading anthologies, congrats on the release!
I love the cover on this book. Hot to look at but Like a person you might actually meet.
azteclady – I think we have the same reading strategy 🙂
limecello – I’m so happy to hear you enjoyed HARDHATS. It’s special to me because it was my first. You are not alone in thinking this was a single title. I think the cover has a single title look. That’s probably why.
cyclops8 – I love the Bad Boys anthologies too!! My editor does a lot less of them now, but they are still some of my favorites. I will be in the Christmas anthology with Donna Kauffman and Jill Shalvis. It’s called TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT (cute, huh?) and comes out on September 30th, which happens to be my birthday!! I’m really excited to read the other two stories.
Fedora – Thank you!! I feel the same way about connected novellas. They kind of let you stay in the story. With HARD AS NAILS, the time period is about 6 months so you get to see how the relationship of the couple from the previous novella unfolds.
Ann – I love blogging and talking with people. Thank you for following along!
Estella – Thank you! I hope you enjoy it.
Cheryl C. – More bang for your buck, so to speak…yeah, that was a terrible joke. Couldn’t resist. 🙂
Susan – I love hearing that. Thanks!
Pat L. – Thank you for including me on the TBR pile. Mine is sooo high right now. I plan to finish the book I’m writing (it’s due 7/15) and then go on a super reading binge.
Maureen – I am the same way. I like the quick satisfaction.
Teresa W – Hi there! One of my books is on it’s way to you right now. Let’s hope the USPS gets this one where it’s supposed to be.
Yes, yes I am intrigued and I love novellas. This sounds like a great summer beach read!!!
I love interconnected stories. Hard As Nails sounds like a great read! 🙂
I liked hearing about how this book came together. And it was very cool of you to fulfill the wishes of your fans!
I love anthologies! I don’t remember too many that are all by the same author. Great idea!!
I like the common house owner premise and love the title.
Keep on writing!
This sounds like a great read. I have never read any of your books before and I just love new authors to me.
