Hitting the road with a gang of geriatric biker witches
Or: How I sold my first novel
Sometimes in writing, like in life, you have to toss out what you know and just have fun. And boy did I learn that the hard way. I’ve always been an avid reader, so I thought I understood exactly what I needed to do to write a book of my own. I outlined, I planned, I made stacks of colored note cards. And I wrote three mysteries that didn’t sell.
Just as I was about to start on mystery number four, I realized something – I didn’t want to write another mystery. I wanted to write a funny paranormal. And worse, I hated outlining, and planning and I wanted to shove those cute, colored note cards into the wood chipper.
I opted for the compost heap instead. Then set out to build my own world where I could make up my own rules. I fell in love with the idea of a preschool teacher who is forced to run off with a gang of geriatric biker witches and The Accidental Demon Slayer was born.
Instead of a 20-page plot outline, I had a 5-page list of ideas, one of which included “but little did they know, all the Shoney’s are run by werewolves.” Instead of following the rules, I broke a few. Instead of ending my writing sessions thinking, “Is this good enough to impress an editor?” I ended them thinking, “No. I didn’t not just write that. I did not just make my character defend herself with a toilet brush and a can of Purple Prairie Clover air freshener.”
I giggled my way through the book and had a complete manuscript in five months. The book sold less than a week later. Who knew that by chucking my plan, I’d achieve my goal? And I think what I learned applies to more than just books. There’s something to be said for relaxing, having fun and following your instincts. Life is too short to do anything else.
The Accidental Demon Slayer is scheduled to be released from Dorchester on July 29. If you don’t want to wait that long, you can win an Advanced Reading Copy right here. One lucky commenter will win an ARC.
thank you for coming and sharing today… that cover is wonderful..
isnt it amazing how life works out? i agree life is too short to not have some fun.. sometimes the best laid plans need to be chucked..lol.. looking forward to reading the book it sounds great..
Hi Angie. Great post. I would love to read The Accidental Demon Slayer. Love the cover.
Thanks. The best compliment I received on that cover was when a friend of mine actually thought those were my legs. I’d told her authors had to model for their covers – I never thought she’d believe me. Of course she is my new *best* friend.
Hi Angie,
Loved the inside glimpse of your creative process for THE ACCIDNTAL DEMON SLAYER. It sounds like a hilarious book and that’s one of my favorite types of paranormals. I, for one, am certainly glad you chucked the 20 page outline and colorful note cards. If you can make yourself smile, that goes a long way to making your readers laugh.
I’m really looking forward to reading this book!
Hugs,
Robin S.
The book sounds like a hoot. I love the idea of geriatric biker witches and werewolf-run restaurants.
It is always a very good sign when an author truly enjoys what she has just written. Humorous writing, regardless of the genre/subgenre, cannot be forced without showing skid marks. I really enjoy zany as long as the heroine is intelligent and witty. I’m looking forward to the book’s release. ep
Some of the best things in life happen when you throw out all the carefully laid plans and just go with it. Fighting with a toliet brush and a can airfreshner, sounds like a great laugh out loud read. Can’t wait to read it.
I sure can’t wait that long!!! 😛
Love the cover!!!! Can’t wait to read it.
Hi Angie, love that cover! I would love to read this book. It sounds like a fantastic read.

Enjoyed your posting and love your outlook that ‘Life is too short not to enjoy’…totally agree with you on that.

I love books that make you laugh… sometimes you need something that will brighten your day!!! The cover is an attention getter, and the whole concept of preschool teacher turned slayer is something I would love to read!!! 😀
:waving: Hi there, Angie!
Like I told you elsewhere, I am very intrigued by the premise–and the cover doesn’t hurt any 😀
Best of luck with the release!
The books sounds great and I would love a copy.
Angie, your book sounds great, would love to read. Can’t wait for it to come out. I know I won’t win a copy, never do, but it sounds great. Love stories with humor in it. And toilet brush??? can’t wait.

I’m looking forward to reading your book!!
Congrats on the book. How did you come up with the geriatic biker witches?
Thanks everyone. When I told my editor how much fun I had with this she said, “I could tell. That’s why I bought it.”
Soooo much easier than the colored notecard route. I’m wincing just thinking of those. For me, I know a story is working when I can’t wait to get back to the keyboard. I just finished the sequel and sent it off to my editor and am really missing the biker witches this week.
Hi cyclops8,
I came up with the geriatric biker witches because they amused me. They’re such fun characters to write because they have no limits. These gals aren’t afraid to say what’s on their minds and do what it takes to get the job done.
And it made sense for the story. The witches were part of a coven that was destroyed by Vald the demon (who is the bad guy in this book). The survivors went on the run. Harleys were their transportation of choice. And before long, the witches had gone biker. Thirty years later, they’re still biker witches, even though their tattoos are sagging and they smell more like BenGay than axle grease.
But don’t cross with the biker witches. They will mess you up.
Love the cover of the book. It sounds like an interesting read and I’m looking forward to hearing more about it.
Glad you gave up on the mysteries, because Paranormals are my favorite reads. This one sounds like a hoot, would love a chance to be able to read it!
this book sounds hysterical i would love a arc of it just cause i want to read it now!!!!! lol
Great cover! Sounds like wonderful read.
awesome! i love the title of your book and just the cover has me wanting to snap your book right up 🙂 Romance is definately the way to go…not saying that I do not like mysteries but romance, ESP. paranormal romance is what lights my spark 😀
Angie, this
is the perfect t-shirt quote!
😀
When the biker witch grandma first shows up, she’s wearing a black t-shirt that says “Kiss my asphalt.” I’m seriously considering having some of those t-shirts made up. But, yes, “don’t cross the biker witches” is another good lesson to remember.
My husband decided he “needed” another motorcycle after he retired from the AF, so now here I am noticing just how geriatric many bikers actually are these days. I love the Shoney’s werewolves idea too.
Hi Angie,
Rules are made to be broken, and breaking them can be a whole heap of fun!! Making up your own rules, even better.
Your book sounds to be a really fun read.
Sure! Everyone “needs” motorcycles, right? As part of my research, I met a biker who has three Harleys. I asked why and he just rolled his eyes. Of course Stone isn’t a big talker to begin with.
That’s another whole subject – the bikers I met along the way. I even ran into two who are practicing witches. And here I thought I was making this up.
You had me from your opening sentence. This is definately being added to my TBP lists. I wish I had it now to read, I so need a good laugh.
Sounds like a very fun book.
Hi, Angie, Just chiming in to say what a great book this sounds like–guess you’re a living example of write your bliss! Congratulations on this, and I’m definitely looking forward to reading it!
Angie, super blog! Yes, sometimes the only way to get things done is by having FUN!
I love your title, love your cover, love your spirit!
Congratulations, and here’s to hitting the bestseller lists!

Thanks! And I agree – sometimes you need a good laugh. The story has dark parts (of course), but it’s being compared to Julie Kenner’s demon mom series and even (I about fell over when I read these early reviews) Janet Evanovich. Kind of wild. I think my publisher timed it right by having this book come out in the summer. It’s very much a light, beachy read.
interesting title, can’t wait to get my hands on it!
I would like to win this! Wot say?!
😀
Everything about this book sounds yummy to me. Yes, I would be thrilled too, to be compared to Janet Evanovich. Love the cover!!
