Dayna Sterling’s always been betwixt and between. Born in a desert town populated by witches and blissfully ignorant humans, Dayna had magic, but no clue how to handle it. So she left to forge a workaday life among ordinary Joes. Which is fine, really—until the day one most extraordinary Joe turns everything upside down…
The assignment is simple. Trace the runaway witch; bring her home for compulsory “cusping” training. So why does Dayna set T.J. McAllister’s half-warlock blood buzzing? Maybe it’s the bonding spell that spontaneously connects them. Or the fact that T.J.’s powers go wonky whenever he’s around Dayna. In any case, the attraction is making it damn hard for T.J. to accomplish his most important mission: prevent a dangerous uprising by locating a powerful witch prophesied to help him. She could be anywhere. She could be closer than he thinks…

When I started working on my latest book, My Favorite Witch, I entered a whole new world… literally! For the first time in more than ten years of writing professionally, I was free to indulge in a little “world building”—and let me tell you, I went for it! I dived right in and started creating a unique universe for my characters. I came up with a historical chronology, a social stratum, and multiple factions of witches—even a few “turned” humans, just to keep things interesting. It was such fun! I was having a blast. Seriously.
Partway through brainstorming, though, the process came to a screeching halt. Why? Because I’m known for writing contemporary romances and western historical romances. I’ve had more than two dozen of them published over the past decade or so. And although I do have a pair of time-travel novellas and a ghostly, Halloween-themed short story to my credit, those three hundred anthologized pages were the extent of my experience in the paranormal romance genre.
Who, I wondered abruptly, did I think I was?
Then the realization hit me: I’m a person who loves to create characters—and to get to know them. Whether that character is a rugged nineteenth century Pinkerton agent or a half warlock, half Patayan magical “guardian” is immaterial. The process is the same, and it’s intoxicating! Sure, runaway (failed) witch Dayna Sterling might not wear a bustle like the Arizona Territory telegraph operator heroine of my upcoming western for Harlequin Historicals, but she’s still relatable and flawed and (occasionally) funny… and she’s got a bunch of surprises in store for her, too!
With that little hiccup straightened out, I was off and running again—and writing my longest, most intricate book to date! My Favorite Witch might be my first-ever paranormal romance, but I truly hope it’s not my last. I’m currently writing a funny Christmas-themed contemporary romance for Zebra Books. After that, I’ll be working on another in my Morrow Creek series for Harlequin. And after that… Well, who knows?
I’m kicking around a Valentine’s Day idea for a contemporary romance. I have a (sixth!) Morrow Creek book to write. It’s hard to say where my enthusiasm and imagination will take me next. But I will say this: I do have a sequel plotted out for one of the secondary characters from My Favorite Witch (can you guess who?). I’m dying to write it! If My Favorite Witch does well (fingers crossed!), I think I’ll be able to.
In the meantime, you’re invited to dip a toe in my otherworldly world. You won’t find any broomsticks (my characters laugh at the thought!), but you will find a pair of fated, intertwined lovers whose paths cross in unexpected and entertaining ways. And I hope you’ll find a good time, too. Please drop by my Web site at http://www.lisaplumley.com/witch-excerpt.html to read the first chapter of My Favorite Witch, or visit Amazon.com to download a preview to your Kindle or iPod/iPod Touch today.

My Favorite Witch sounds great. I’m drawn to books like this. They sound fun and entertaining to me.
I will admit that I have never read any of your books before. My Favorite Witch just might have to be my first.
My Favorite Witch sounds like fun.
I have read several of your books and have really enjoyed them.
I would love to read a good witching book! This sounds good.
Hi Lisa,
First do NOT enter me in the drawing as I own all of Lisa’s books to date so I’d rather someone new to her find her wonderful and entertaining stories.
You know I love you and your work, so I just wanted to stop by and say “HI!” *waving* I have MY FAVORITE WITCH and hope life will let me start reading it tomorrow. I’m really looking forward to it. If you have not read Lisa’s work before I say run out NOW and get one. No matter what she writes it’s always good and you always finish reading with a smile on your face!
hugs,
WendyK
I’m looking forward to reading this, thanks great blog today.
Penney

pamk, thanks! I hope you’ll drop by my Web site and check out my books. I like to think there’s something there for everyone.
Hi Brandy W! Thanks. I definitely did my best to make My Favorite Witch fun and entertaining. That’s what it’s all about, right?
Helen L, hello! I really appreciate that! Thanks so much for reading my books. That means the world to me.
What a cute avatar, bunnyb! Please go have a look at the first chapter of Dayna’s and T.J.’s story. Maybe you’ll like it!
Aww, WendyK! You’re TOO sweet! That’s so nice of you. You’ve completely made my day.
Hi Penney! Thank you! I’m definitely not a naturally prolific blogger, but I do my best. Have a great day!
EVERYONE, if you have questions about my books or writing or anything else, just let me know! I’m happy to chat!
Lisa
Sounds like a great book. Will have to look for it on my next trip to the bookstore. Thanks for guestblogging.
I too have Lisa’s books so no need for entering me in the drawing. This sounds like a wonderful beginning to a new line of writing for her. Isn’t it fun to jaunt off to a new place?
Question for Lisa re: world building – how much of it “just came” to you and how much dd you have to craft to fit the needs of the story?
Thanks, Cherie J! I hope you will pick up a copy. Just look for those two cute little ghosts on the cover.
Lisa, I am glad to hear that you are also working on another contemporary Christmas book. Your book ONCE UPON A CHRISTMAS is one of my favorite holiday-themed books. Just thinking about it now makes me want to reread it soon!
cheryl c! That’s wonderful! Thanks very much. I had a fun time “Christmas-izing” the three stories in Once Upon A Christmas. I really love the holidays, so I’m grateful that my (wonderful) editor at Kensington was up for another Christmas book. It’s coming along well… Can’t wait to share it next year!
Love the cover… Sounds like a terrific read… Give me a little magic anytime!
Hi, this book looks good! I love your books, Lisa.
Congratulations on finishing your first paranormal, and from the blurb, it sounds wonderful and I’m sure there will plenty more =) I’m looking forward to reading about the world you created!
LOL, Colleen! Everybody can use a little magic once in a while, right?
Hi Pat L! Thanks, that’s very kind of you. Sometimes, I still can’t believe other people are reading my books…and enjoying them! That’s endlessly cool. I’m smiling now.
Eshani, hello! (Beautiful name, BTW!) Thanks for the congrats — I really appreciate that. I’ve got my fingers crossed that there’ll be more paranormals on the horizon.
Hi Lisa,
Congrats on the new release. Can’t wait to read your first paranormal romance.
The book sounds like an awesome read!
The books look great and funny, I do love finding new ones
Hello again!
Susan, I somehow missed your comment the last time through. Whoops! Sorry about that. Thanks a million for reading my books! So nice of you! And yes, you’re right — it really *is* fun to try new directions once in a while. I like to keep things fresh. And I’ll try almost anything once.
On your question re: world building… It was a mixture of inspiration and necessity, I guess. Inspiration would strike, then I’d have to find a way to incorporate that idea into whatever existing elements I had already. For me, working on a book begins with a HUGE universe of possibilities, then narrows constantly from there, the further I go. Every step, whether with a character or a world, opens new avenues (and closes off other ones). It definitely makes for easier writing the farther I go in a book, since I “know” a lot more as I proceed. I’m a linear writer, for sure, but I admire those multiple-draft types a lot!
In fact, one of the hardest parts of writing for me is staying open to ALL the possibilities and not shooting things down too quickly or getting too specific too soon. I’m a person who likes to have things all tied up with a neat bow , but creating can be (and should be) messy! Paradoxically, that’s one of the reasons I like writing — because it’s endlessly challenging AND forces me out of my comfort zone on a regular basis.
When it came to My Favorite Witch, I thought of the world itself as a character. It even had its own separate section in the synopsis, just like my hero/heroine do! I felt really strongly that it was important to get the worldbuilding right. So the big picture was nailed down ahead of time, but the details were spur of the moment…a lot like everything else in my books.
Does that answer your question at all? (I hope!) You can probably guess that I’m not the world’s most analytical writer. I *love* to study story structure, and I’m a terrible person to see movies with (I can’t help but discuss them to death), but when it comes to my own work, I’m a weird mix of plan-plan-plan and fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants. I don’t like to think about my “process” too much. I’d hate to jinx it! LOL!
Hey, cyclops8! Thanks for dropping by, and thanks for the congrats! Is it me, or does “first paranormal romance” sound totally cool? Somebody pinch me.
Jeanette, hi! I’ve had some wonderful feedback from readers so far on My Favorite Witch, but I can’t remember if “awesome” has come up yet. Here’s hoping!
Hello, blodeuedd! I like to think that most of my books are entertaining. I’m not trying to change the world…just to give readers a good time. And yes, I love finding new books too! If only I could find more hours in the day to read them…
Hi Lisa! It looks like your characters are across the board in all genres. Is it hard to keep them and your storylines apart?
Deidre
Hi Deidre! Yes, they are. You’re right! But I DO remember everyone (and what they were/are doing). That’s mostly because all my characters feel very real to me when I’m working on a book — and also because I try very hard to work on ONE book/storyline at a time, so I can really focus.
That’s not always easy. Like most writers, I’m typically promoting one book, writing another book, and planning future story ideas, during any given time period, but those things aren’t really happening concurrently. For instance, right now I’m talking about My Favorite Witch (a paranormal), writing Untitled Xmas Book (a contemporary), and thinking about revisions on The Mail-Order Groom (a western historical). I also need to do more planning on my next Morrow Creek book (a historical) and pull together something for a Valentine’s Day-themed book (a contemporary romance). But on any given day, I choose ONE thing to work on, and that’s it! I’m only human, after all. And I try to have a fun life outside of writing, too.
Whichever book I’m working on at any given moment, I’m working on it 100% — no switching back and forth! I know some writers who easily shift gears between projects, but I’m not one of them. Maybe I’m short on brain space or something.
This is what works for me, though. So far. Fingers crossed!
Your new book sounds really interesting, Lisa. Stretching your boundaries can definitely be a lot of fun and it sounds like it definitely was for you. I enjoyed the excerpt and I look forward to reading the whole book.
your books sounds like a fun and adventurous read! I bet that you have done a fab job switching into this genre
Sounds really interesting. I’ll have to check out your website and read the excerpt!
The book sounds good! Cute cover
Oh, these sound awesome. I LOVE to read Halloween books, books about witches, vamps, etc around Halloween. I have to get these!!
Love the cover, btw.
Hi Lisa,
I have read a few of your books and I can’t wait to read My Favorite Witch. I look forward to your Christmas books – that is what hooked me onto your books.
Lynne
Sounds like my kind of read!
Hi Karin! How have you been? Thanks so much for reading the first chapter of My Favorite Witch. Believe me, things *really* get rolling once T.J. and Dayna meet!
becky jean, thanks! I sure hope you’re right. I’ve done some subgenre switching before, but writing My Favorite Witch still felt a little risky for me! All together, I’ve written short contemporary/category romances, single-title contemporary romances, time-travel novellas, single-title historical romances, and now paranormal romance, so I’m definitely not afraid to experiment. I’ve also tried my hand at a cozy mystery, a romantic suspense, a couple of medieval ideas, and some early 20th-century set historicals. Those last few are currently “under the bed” manuscripts…but I’m hopeful I can resurrect them someday!
Hello, JV! I hope you DO check out the Web site and read the excerpt. We really try to put everything that readers might want to know about my books right there in one convenient place. It’s a work in progress. I’m also experimenting with Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, Shelfari, LibraryThing, goodreads… So many cool sites, so little time!
Yes, isn’t it cute, Chelsea B? I’ve had a lot of nice feedback on the cover. The cover for my last book, Home for the Holidays, had a similar feel. My publisher is still experimenting with packaging. I’m curious to see what they’ll come up with for my current book. Usually the cover is finished before the manuscript is!
Howdy, Melissa! Me too. I was fortunate enough to be included in the Hallowe’en Husbands anthology last year (with Denise Lynn and Christine Merrill), and it was really cool to participate in a trio of stories about the season. It was Harlequin Historicals’ first-ever Halloween anthology!
Lynne, aren’t you sweet? Thanks for reading my books! I love writing Christmas themed stories…even though (or maybe because) I’m usually working on the manuscripts in the middle of a long, hot, 100-degrees+ Arizona summer! Ho ho ho!
Thanks, Teresa W! I hope you’ll check out My Favorite Witch. I even have a copy on the Kindle app for my iPod Touch. (Yes, I’m kind of geeky that way.) It’s really cool to flip through the pages and revisit Dayna and T.J.
Have a super weekend, everyone! This has been FUN!
