John Murphy gets the shock of his life when he finds three abandoned girls on his doorstep. Once he takes them in, it isn’t long before the little tykes bring out his fiercest protective instincts. So when their mother shows up at his Emmett’s Mill ranch, he’s ready to do battle.
Except Renee Dolling isn’t what he expects. She clearly loves her girls and wants to make up for past mistakes. John wants to trust her, but he’s got the girls to think about. Unless Renee can prove she’s the mother her daughters deserve…and the woman this solitary rancher needs.
I’m a firm believer in the saying “Everything happens for a reason” but I’m equally fond of fighting for what I need or what I feel is right.
July marks the release of my sixth book published through Harlequin Superromance and I have to say, I’m quite proud of this particular story.
Why? Well, writers often consider their books like children so if I were to use that analogy, I guess you could say this book is the kid that almost didn’t make it.
When my editor called to discuss the proposal she admitted her concern that readers might find the heroine, Renee Dolling, a bit unsympathetic.
In other words, she was fairly unlikeable.
I mean, what kind of heroine abandons her three young children to a drug-addicted ex-husband? And then loses them? Literally.
On the surface, Renee is the kind of character that makes you want to give her a slap for dragging three little girls into the muck of her life and then having the audacity to demand their return when they’ve been taken away from her. But that’s just surface stuff. Digging deeper, past the defensive posturing, the tough exterior, was a woman who was deeply affected by the choices she’d made in her life that had ended up hurting her children. Deep down…she’d do anything to sooth that pain she created, even if it means taking a good, hard look at herself to make amends.
That takes guts. Not everyone has the emotional fortitude to take that kind of chance. Some people go their entire lives needing therapy yet never go; they continue to make the same mistakes until their lives — and everyone who has the misfortune to be attached to them — end up a miserable mess.
But even as I knew redeeming Renee wouldn’t be a cakewalk, I knew in my heart that there was an amazing woman underneath that mask.
My editor was wary but in the end, she chose to have faith.
That faith, she later told me, was not misplaced. The first draft made her cry; I became dubbed, “Queen of the Redeeming Unredeemable Characters.”
And so, KIDS ON THE DOORSTEP, became the book on shelves this month.
Thus far, the reviews have been positive but the most rewarding experience was more personal. A reader — a local woman who is admittedly not a romance reader — came up to me, wanting to share that the story had hit an emotional chord with her as she’d lost custody of her son when she was young and knew the pain and guilt associated with having a child taken by the law and the subsequent steps that must be taken to have the child returned. I’ve never experienced this myself, but I can only imagine. I was flattered and my belief in this story was further validated that Renee’s story needed to be told.
I’m offering a free copy of my July book to one lucky poster who shares a comment about something they feel passionate about. It can be serious or silly — there are no rules.

Aww it looks like a sweet book
I guess right now I am feeling very passionate about blogging. it has taken off and I can’t stop thinking about it, I love to read a book and then go blog about it.
Ohhh sounds like a great book. I’m very passionate about my family. We were all taught as kids that there were only two things that would NEVER change and never falter, our God and our family. I’ve carried that belief with me through life. I can speak of my family but no one else better speak ill of them. And once you are part of my family you remain part of it. Period. I have a weird family. But we love each other, fight as we do, if one is in need we all rally around to offer help and support. so I am very passionate about my family. My mom is my best friend, along with my DH.
Your story sounds great, I love the fact you felt it had to be told and told it. Did you have to do some tough research for it?
hugs,
WendyK
Hi Kimberly. Sounds like a great book. Beautiful cover. I feel passionate about taking care of my family.
Hi! Thank you for welcoming me to this wonderful blog site!
Blodeuedd: Blogging is fun, although unless I’m guesting somewhere I rarely have the discipline to sit down and blog regularly, though my sister is a champion blogger. Her son, my nephew, has Down Syndrome and she keeps the family informed and in the loop with what’s happening with him and their family through her blog. It’s great!
Wendy: I didn’t do a lot of research into the custody issues as I had some personal experience from when I was a kid to draw from but I did watch a lot of YouTube videos on horse training as the hero, John Murphy, rehabilitates traumatized horses. I followed my intuition when it came to Renee because she was so complex.
Crystal: Hi! Families are a wonderful thing to be passionate about! Thank you for visiting.
Hi Kimberly,
“I’m a firm believer in the saying “Everything happens for a reason” but I’m equally fond of fighting for what I need or what I feel is right.” . . . I couldn’t agree more.
KIDS ON THE DOORSTEP sounds like a wonderful read!
Things I’m passionate about ~ my books and reading, chocolate, my shoe and handbag collection (Clinton and Stacey “What Not to Wear” say they don’t have to match they have to go), and Diet Dr. Pepper. (Silly I know, but I’m serious) lol
I love cowboys romance books, love the cover too that snow looks great we never get snow here. My passion is my books, my kids, my little garden flowers.
Your book sounds like a great read thanks for blogging here today,
Penney
Two things I am passionate about are my 1 year old nephew and books… I love all the new things I see about my nephew each day… watching all of his firsts!
Oh and books, my life would be so boring without the wonderful world of books!
I am crazy (well, almost crazy) about computer games, especiall RPG. Just love them. I have about 4-5 game machines or maybe more. And of course I read a lot!
I’m passionate about cooking and baking. Especially baking. I love to make beautiful cakes and pies. I even make DH take pictures of it and post them on allrecipes… and of course there is this romance book addiction of mine…lol
Christy: OMG I love Diet Dr. Pepper, too! It’s definitely my first choice of soda beverage. I think it’s downright addictive! And of course, chocolate goes without saying. My sister brought home Belgium chocolate when she went to Europe and, holy cow, it was so good. Puts the stuff we eat here to shame! If you have the chance, try it.
Penney: I love snow. I grew up with snow but then I moved away to the Central Valley of California and now I never see snow. I miss it. Plus I prefer the winter season overall, which is probably why I tend to set stories in the fall or winter!
Colleen: Yes, I agree. Without books, the world would be a dull place, indeed. I just started Lynsay Sands THE ACCIDENTAL VAMPIRE. I like to jump around in my reading preferences and right now I’m loving the paranormal.
Tamsyn: Wow! That’s a lot of gaming! My son would probably love you. My dh and I used to play Dungeons and Dragons (Am I showing my age?) when we were younger. It was a lot of fun.
Emmanuelle: I’m intrigued by this baking passion you have. It sounds delicious. I’m not terrible wonderful in the kitchen but I do love to eat. I love the fact that your hubby takes pictures of your desserts. That’s so awesome and sweet!
Kimberly, your book sounds fantastic. I love that you have a heroine who may not seem redeemable on the surface but proves redeemable in the end. Second chances can be really important. I look forward to reading the book.
As for things I’m passionate about, it’s definitely my family, education, and books. I spend a lot of time with my family and love getting to spend time with my nieces and nephews. In fact, on birthdays and Christmas, I take each of them to some kind of event or on an outing and give them a book. My oldest nephew, 9, is going to loan me the book I bought him for Christmas because it sounds great and he says it was really good. I haven’t stopped educating myself and am in yet another degree program. And books have been my constant companion since I could read. I always have one with me.
Karin: Thank you for stopping by and I hope you like KIDS ON THE DOORSTEP. It was such a wonderful experience writing this book because peeling away the layers to the true emotion underneath is what I enjoy so much. How fantastic that you continue to educate yourself. A thirst for knowledge can be addictive (in a good way!).
My passion is my family, reading and gardening.
I’m really passionate about animal rights. I wish I was a vegetarian but it’s hard when you live in the midwest b/c everything has meat on it. BUT what makes me so mad is when people mistreat cats and dogs. I live in Missouri the puppy mill capital of the US and it makes me SOOOO mad. Truly sad and all these animals want is love.
I fight for tougher penalties and have written letters to have tougher penalties for people who mistreat animals. A society is only as strong as it’s weakest members.
Hey Kimberly!
I find lately I’ve been passionate about sewing. It was something I enjoyed back in the day but now it consumes me. Love to make purses and doll clothes. It’s a great hobby to have and it’s a fun creative outlet for me.
Estella: Gardening is a great outlet for stress but I have the opposite of a green thumb. Still, I love it.
Rachie: I love animals, too. I hate when people treat animals so cruelly. How fabulous that you are crusading for those who can’t speak for themselves. Good job!
Lyoness: More power to you. I can’t sew a button.
Thank you everyone for a wonderful day. I will select a winner out of the bunch and Fatin will post the winner. Thanks again! I had a great time.
Kimberly~~I got my copy of this that I won off Writeminded yesterday~~thank you so much!!
So please don’t enter me………
LOL, there are alot of things I feel passionately about, but lately I’m angry, sad and fired up at the number of people who are dumping animals. It breaks my heart.
We live by Ft. Knox, and it just seems the thing to do is to dump your unwanted cat or dog on the fringe of the reservation. It’s so sad!!
My sister even saw a dog sitting by it’s food bowl, bed and toy. How sad is that?? Why would someone do such a thing?? There are several shelters around here, and a dog pound. I know people are having a hard time w/ money, but there are other options than dumping your animal to fend for itself on the side of a road. It breaks my heart!!
Sounds like a great book! I’m passionate about books1
Hi and welcome; a really fitting topic to write a story about.
I’m passionate about:
Pepsi
Iced Tea
Plain potato chips with Dill Pickle dip
Dogs
We had to put our 14 yr. old dog down and I still miss him terribly and I think it is so wrong for some people to own a dog(s) with the way they treat them and don’t look after them properly. Our Sam, a male Apricot toy poodle, brought so much love into our home and lives that it is indescribable. He was our furbaby, our friend. Shame on people for mistreating dogs/animals.
