What if the guy in the airplane seat next to you turned out to be the love of your life?
Juliana, happy in her career as a hair stylist, is on her way to visit her boyfriend of ten years who’s working out of state. She’s wondering why they’re not engaged yet. Michael is going to his fiance’s parents’ home for an engagement party he doesn’t want. A states’ prosecutor, he’s about to try the biggest case of his career, he hates the distraction, and he’s having doubts about the relationship.
They sit together on the plane, and discover they’re on the same flight coming back. When the weekend is a disaster for each of them, they bond on the plane ride home. But life is full of complications, including their exes, who don’t want to let go, and when Michael’s trial turns dangerous, the two must confront what they value most in life…

Thanks for having me today! As a reader of romance, I love turning points. Don’t you just live for that moment when these two individuals leave their separate selves behind and become one? Sometimes, one of them realizes the significance of this new relationship before the other. That’s what happens in my new book, Love at First Flight, in stores this week.
My characters, Michael Maguire and Juliana Gregorio, meet at the Baltimore airport on a Friday evening when they are on their way to visit their significant others in Florida. After they each endure a disastrous weekend, they meet up again on the flight home, striking up an unlikely friendship that leads to love. One of the things I love best about this book is the way Michael and Juliana are friends first and lovers second. Their love blossoms slowly and sweetly as they support each other through difficult breakups and challenging work and family situations.
I thought I’d share an excerpt from one of Michael and Juliana’s turning points, when he puts his heart on the line to tell her how he’s feeling . . .
Michael kept an arm around her as they went outside. Once they were in the car, he turned to her. “I’m not looking for a rebound, Juliana. That’s not what this is.”
“Then what is it?” she asked softly.
He ran a finger over her cheek to brush away a lone tear. “It’s not a rebound.”
“I don’t want it, Michael. Whatever it is. I love Jeremy.”
“I know you do, but you see, the thing is, I’m falling for you, Juliana.”
“What?” she asked, flabbergasted. She pushed his hand away from her face. “You can’t mean that!”
He kept his eyes locked on hers. “In the five days I’ve known you, you’ve given me more, been there for me more, done more for me than Paige did in four years. I knew I would care for you from almost the first moment I saw you. When I found you crying in the airport on Sunday, all I wanted to do was scoop you up and take you home with me.”
New tears wet Juliana’s cheeks. “You don’t know what you’re saying.”
He took her hand. “On Friday night I tried to get Paige to marry me right away. Do you know why?”
Juliana shook her head.
“Because I was terrified after I met you. I already knew everything was about to change, and I guess a part of me thought I should try to stop it. But I was powerless to stop it. In those first moments with you, I knew I wouldn’t marry her.”
“Michael,” she sobbed. “Stop. Stop saying these things.”
“Juliana, any man who would let you think, for even one minute, that you aren’t enough for him doesn’t deserve you.”
“Please,” she whimpered. “Please stop.”
With a hand to her chin, he turned her to him. “I knew I was falling for you when you jumped right in with Rachelle on Sunday night and did her hair. I knew it when I found you dancing in the kitchen when you were making me dinner. I knew it because my heart almost stopped when you told me someone hassled you on the street. I knew it when I heard you talking to Rachelle about what she saw, and you said all the right things—all the things she needed to hear.” He ran his thumb along her jaw. “And when I felt your fingers in my hair I knew I wanted them there always. Don’t tell me I don’t know what I’m saying.”
He leaned over to kiss her gently, without demand, and for one breathless moment, she let him. Then she pulled away. “Michael. My head is spinning. Please don’t.”
“I’m sorry. I know this isn’t a good time for you to be hearing this, but I couldn’t let you think this was about rebounds. I’m not going to pressure you or push you, so you don’t have to worry about that. I’m going to be so wrapped up in this trial for the next month or two I won’t have time for anything else. I just wanted you to know.”
“I can’t stay with you anymore. Not now.”
“Why? I just said I’m not going to do anything about it.”
“Because everything’s going to be weird between us.”
He took her hand again. “It won’t be weird because you’ll hardly see me. I don’t want you to go.”
“I don’t know… I’ll only stay if you promise not to mention any of this again. I can’t deal with it on top of everything else.”
“I promise I won’t say another word about it until you do.”
She pulled her hand out of his grasp. “That’s not going to happen.”
“We’ll see,” he said, starting the car to drive them home. “We’ll just see about that.”

HI Marie,
Humm turning points. I’ll have to think about it.This is a great post and great sounding book. I love friends into lovers stories.
I know there are great turning points in stories but my mind went blank on them. Sad really.
I’d love to win either book both sound great.
hugs,
WendyK
Wonderful excerpt, Marie!
I love your heroes. So masculine, but with just enough sensitivity. Yup, you provide what Sourcebooks promises…heroes we can fall in love with. (grins)
Ash
Hi Wendy,
Glad you like the friends to lovers premise. It was fun to write! Enjoy the book.
Hi Ash,
Nice to see you here. That was the first unveiling of that excerpt. Glad you liked it!!
Hi Marie,
Lovely post. I’m not eligible so don’t enter my name. Just wanted to say that one of the turning points is when the hero and heroine starts of disliking each other and ended up together! You know, the guy who is so arrogant and rubs you the wrong way and then something happened, and bang! you found that he can also be sensitive and caring….
Hi Tamsyn,
You are describing my hero in Line of Scrimmage–Ryan Sanderson. He comes off as somewhat of a jerk in chapter 1 and then we immediately discover that he’s really freaking out over losing his wife and will do whatever it takes to win her back. Readers tell me they want to dislike him at first but he so totally redeems himself that they end up falling for him.
I’m writing a WIP right now that has a hero and heroine at odds in the beginning. That’s fun to write! Thanks for coming by!
Hi Marie,
When I read a romance story I like to know in advance who the hero/heroine would be. That said, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to read Love at First Flight because of the fact that I’m not sure who the heroine will end with…but the above excerpt really intrigues me so am adding this to my TBB list!
I really friends to lover storylines. One of the turning points that does it for me is when the hero realizes that he loves the heroine/his best friend beyond friendship and he would do anything to persuade her of his serious intentions.
This sounds like a fantastic book.Great excerpt.Aother new author to me and to add to my reading list.
Oh man Marie, you are killing me! I REALLY need to finish the other book, and then there is my own writing, and work, and Gah! It sounds SO good! Emily was literally speechless. That alone earns you my undying gratitude.
Enjoyed the excerpt, sounds good! I’m always looking for new authors to read!
Love this excerpt, Marie! You’re everywhere today!
I always love the “black moment” in a book when you wonder “oh no! how are they going to resolve this?!” And then, of course, it always works out in the end.
Your book sounds wonderful.
I love the excerpt. Count me in for the drawing.

I love when the hero and heroine grow up together and are good friends then things change (turning point) and they feel an attraction for each other. Great excerpt.
Hi, I cannot wait for this book. And where else are you today?
I love when a tortured heroine or hero gets “untortured” by the love of a good man/woman.
Just stopping by to say “Hi Marie!” I’ve already got my copy. It’s a winner!
i like the ugly ducking
best firends them e is a good one
congrats on teh books
Hey Marie,
LOVE the excerpt! Can’t wait to get my hands on L@FF! Michael sounds yummy in spite of his name! LOL!
As for turning points… the first serious lip lock between the H/H is usually a great turning point. They may or may not have been thinking about or having feeling for the other, but a serious kiss means they can no longer ignore what’s going on!
MUCH MUCH SUCCESS to you and your new release!
Your Evil Twin,
Aunty Cindy
Congrats on the new release. I love it when the hero or heroine realizes that they have fallen in love and don’t know how to react.
Holy smokes! I go to lunch and the girls go wild!
Elaine, thanks so much for adding me to your list!! I am so honored!
Sharon, I’m so delighted that Emily loved L@FF so much. Everyone needs to have a fan as good for their ego as she is for mine. You have a lovely daughter! Looking forward to hearing what you think and to seeing you in two short weeks! YAY!
Teresa W, thank you for your interest! I really appreciate it!
Theresa, my WIP pal, I am working the corner today! LOL! Launch week madness! I love those black moments when you’ve written yourself into a corner and have to say, okay, Einstein, what now?
But that’s what makes it so FUN, right?
I heart book gossip–what a great handle you have there! You’re in the drawing. Thanks for coming by!
delitealex–great thought. The growing up friends and becoming lovers idea could be so fun. Must toss that into the idea file! Thanks for coming by!
Pat L–Glad you’re looking forward to L@FF. I’m also at the Wet Noodle Posse (http://wetnoodleposse.blogspot.com/) and Book Addict on the Pop Syndicate (http://www.popsyndicate.com/books/story/rules_schmools_by_marie_force)
Hi Cheryl, by Casa sister, nice to see you here!! Thanks for reading L@FF this weekend!
Kim, ohhhh, the ugly duckling! Good one! Another tidbit for the idea file!
Aunty Cindy, thank you for getting on your broomstick and coming by to visit
I appreciate your good wishes!!
Cyclops B, I love that, too. Michael knows he’s in BIG trouble the minute he sets eyes on Juliana. How he handles that realization is at the heart of L@FF. I hope you enjoy it!
Whew! You guys are great! Now I need a nap!
Marie,
I get so sappy when friendship turns into love. I can’t help it, I mean, how sweet is that when you find that your best friend is the best person to live your forever with. That first tingle, first kiss….Its such a great realization and turning point in books when finally the hero/heroine accepts this truth about themselves.
I loved the excerpt.
This sounds like a great book! I like stories of friendship turning to love, and when all of a sudden something happens and they start to look at each other differently and realize what was there all along. Great excerpt and I can’t wait to read more!
This looks like a very romantic story
I love the ‘I wouldn’t ever date anyone like him’ and that is exactly who you end up with and are so happy that you didn’t listen to the voices in you head but instead to them in your heart.
Love the story so please enter me.
Hi Armenia,
Thanks for your comment. That is a wonderful moment you describe. I’m almost “there” in my WIP and I can’t WAIT to write it. Fun, fun, fun!! Thanks for coming by!
Hi Lisa N,
In Love at First Flight, it’s more about getting Juliana on board with the fact that things are changing between her and Michael. He realizes it from the first instant their eyes meet in the airport. KA-PLOOY! Thanks for your comment!
Hi Becky,
It is a really romantic story with a dash of suspense and some jealous exes thrown in to keep things interesting! Hope you enjoy it!
Hi Robyn,
My first thought when I met my husband? No way. LOL! Twenty years later, we’re still together. Sometimes the gut gets it wrong, but most of the time it can be trusted. Happy to have you in the drawing!
This book looks really good. Am looking forward to reading it. Please count me in for the contest.
Turning points… so many great choices out there! I enjoy the variety of reasons that bring the lead characters together. Wonderful excerpt… thanks for sharing!!!
This sounds like a great read! Thanks for sharing!
I like most story lines and friends turning to lovers is one of them.
I would love to win a copy of your latest book.
I like both friends into lovers and love at first sight stories…from the excerpt it sounds like it is kinda both! Looking forward to reading it…
I have read Line of Scrimmage and enjoyed it immensely!
Friends to lovers is one of my favorite stories.
Hi everyone!
Thanks for coming by tonight! My internet connection is acting up so just a quick hello and thank you to everyone who commented today. It was great fun to be with you!! I appreciate all your kind words about my books.
Marie
Hi Marie! So good to meet you!! I didn’t have the joy to get LINE OF SCRIMMAGE but now I’ll have to change that seeing all the goodies I missed of yours including this new one!
I do love friends to lovers story. I know that it can be hard to jump that line now knowing how it will turn out and if the other too feels as you do. But then I think you’ll never know unless you try. I think you’d always wonder and wonder and that disappointment if it doesn’t work, will ease over time so its worth to try!
One of my favorite movies with a definite turning point is It’s a Wonderful Life. I love the moment when George realizes that he hads touched so many people and that life is worthwhile. He runs through the streets, sliding in the snow, laughing and screaming, mad with joy at the richness of his life.
I always cry when his brother comes in from Germany and says a toast to George “To my brother George, the richest man in town”!!
Sniff Sniff!
Great excerpt! The turning point in a novel is usually one of my favorite parts of the novel. One of the most memorable turning points I’ve read was the one in Pride & Prejudice.
Hi, Marie!! Good topic! The turning point is definitely a vital part of most stories–it usually seems to be a climax of sorts, where one or both of the characters comes to an important realization and the rest of the book or movie is more of seeing how that plays out in the story or relationship. For instance, it’s when the hero realizes that he isn’t married to this woman just because of circumstances, it’s because he actually has feelings for her–he actually loves her! And then it’s exciting to see how that realization translates into his actions towards her. I loved Line of Scrimmage (excellent turning points there), btw, and am looking forward to Love at First Sight!
I really enjoyed the excerpt – thanks.
Please count me in, the exerpt sounds great to me.
I’m not one for romance novels but THIS one sounds like a very good “read” If I don’t win it, I will definitely pick up this book….
The turning point in a story is usually the best part…sometimes from that point, you just know the story is going to end and you don’t want it to!!!
I have two favorite “turning point” moments…
One is from a novel waaaaaaaaaay back in yon olden days and it takes place more than 3/4 of the way through; in SENSE AND SENSIBILITY, when Marianne finally realizes what an extraordinary man she’s been overlooking in Colonel Brandon. (One of my all-time favorite heroes, even though he isn’t the main squeeze).
Second comes from Lisa Kleypas’ THE DEVIL IN WINTER, when Sebastian realizes the only woman he wants is Evie and agrees to three months of celibacy to prove the sincerity of his intentions. *swoon*
I was just re-reading an old favorite of mine, The Pretenders by Joan Wolf. It is the story of two young people falling in love who had been friends since childhood and it was such fun seeing them each notice the other as an adult.
I would love to win Love at First Flight. I love all kinds of romance stories.
Hi Marie! I married a man that started out being just a good friend and we have been married for 25 years now. So it can work!
Hi! Marie,
I definitely believe in friendship before love. I married a man who was my friend for a long time (even through an engagement to another man!) and we’ve been married 22 years. I sometimes think this is the best way to go to find a lifetime partner.
