“Write what you know.”
As a writer, you hear that advice all the time. And for the most part, I follow it. Why? Because writing a story with elements based in my areas of expertise are the most fun for me to write.
Which means I’ve had fun writing about meteorology (The Sydney Croft Storm series,) animals (pretty much every book I’ve written has an animal in it,) medicine (my Demonica series is set in an underworld hospital, but long before that I was writing paramedic heroes and heroines,) and the military (I was in the Air Force, so military people keep showing up in my stories.)
But “write what you know” doesn’t necessarily mean you have to write about your career expertise. If you’re a mechanic, you don’t have to write about mechanics. If you’re an accountant, your hero doesn’t have to crunch numbers if you don’t want him to.
We all have hobbies and areas of extreme interest. We all have experiences that have given us unique knowledge – good and bad. All of those things can be drawn on for ideas.
Just because you aren’t a degreed history professor doesn’t mean you can’t write a book set in ancient Egypt. Maybe you’ve been fascinated by Egyptian history since you were three, and you have more knowledge than the average person. Or maybe you just possess great research skills.
“Write what you know” can mean so many things, including, “write what you want.”
When I came up with the concept of my Demonica series, I did draw on what I know – emergency medicine. No, I’m not a doctor. But I did earn an Emergency Medical Technician degree, so I have a slight leg up. More importantly, I’ve been fascinated by emergency medicine since I was a kid. Some of my favorite TV shows are medical dramas and true-life medical shows. Many of my favorite reads? You guessed it – medical thrillers and medical memoirs.
But I also combined my love of medicine with the paranormal – another childhood love, born the day I read my first horror novel: Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot.
After that, I read every horror novel I could get my hands on. I dove into the legends behind Vlad Dracul, werewolves, and demons. Man, I could not get enough of the paranormal.
I watch everything paranormal I can, from movies to TV series. Keep it coming, Hollywood!
So what about you? If you’re an author, do you like to write fiction using the “write what you know” advice? If you’re a reader, do you like to read in the areas in which you are knowledgeable?

as a first time writer, im slowly working on a first story.. i am writing what i know..
Hi, Larissa,
I LOVED Pleasure Unbound! And the Acro series!
I read whatever catches my eye, usually paranormal and fantasy. I enjoy learning about new things. But I mostly enjoy reading the worlds and the rules that make them different from the world we live in.
Hi Larissa. As a reader, I like reading about stuff I know and also stuff I don’t know. I like to learn new things.
I love the cover to Pleasure Unbound.
I’ve always loved history and fairytales, maybe that’s why my favorite reads are historicals, fantasy and paranormal.
Pleasure Unbound is on my wishlist!

Hi Larissa,
Your cover of Pleasure Unbound is sizzling! I can’t imagine what the story is like if the cover is that hot.
I absolutely love the paranormal and also historical romance. Gotta have those period pieces. I am open to other genre’s just for a change in pace and sometimes they really surprise me and I learn something new. I know that’s the point of reading different stuff. LOL!
Even though I am just a reader and not an author I do agree with what you’ve written. I would think that doing some of the research would be really fun and there is always room in our brains for more knowledge.
As a reader i love reading about things i don’t know as much as things i do, as long as they’re interesting and the book is good, i’ll read anything. As a writer my imagination takes me to the weirdest place i don’t think *anyone* knows
My favorite genre to read is Paranormal (with vamps being my fav). I have many favorite vampire series that I follow and never miss the latest releases! I have my copy of Pleasure Unbound coming in the mail soon and I’m looking forward to it.
Hi, Larissa–I pretty much reading it all
Ido love reading about what I know when the writer’s also got a reasonably good grasp of it and is telling a good story. Otherwise I do admit that sometimes glaring errors can pull me out of the story. And I love reading about what I don’t know because as others have said, how else would I have a chance to learn
Hi Larissa! Thanks for visiting with us today! I… pretty much read anything -it’s a mix of reading what I know or don’t, but I don’t actively choose it. My knowledge (what little of it there is) is in bits and pieces. Also, mostly my area of “expertise” isn’t written about. At least, not in the books I prefer to read. Otherwise, sometimes a book will bother me because I know it’s wrong. That detracts from the book in what I feel is an unnecessary way, so I prefer to avoid it. If something is right, however, and somewhat obscure but I know about it, I get excited. Haha, I hope that made sense.
I love to read about things I don’t know, and will probably never experience. What a simple way to expand your knowledge base.
It’s so nice of you to give the winner their choice of books!
Sandi
As a reader, it doesn’t really matter to me whether a book sports a background or topic where I am not knowledgeable. The only difficulties I run into with this area is if I do know something about was is being written and realize that the material/facts portrayed/stated are wrong…then it jolts me out of the story.
Wow great cover!!!
As a reader, I enjoy reading a wide variety of things as long as they do not bore me!!!
Hi Larissa,
I like reading about things I know and things I don’t know. Some of the things I have read lately have been for school and have been really quite interesting. I have had to do research for school papers and I find it is helpful, to me, when I am looking up information for the story I am writing.
Hey Larissa!
Personally, in the field of romance, I liked to read everything. I don’t have to have a personal connection to become involved with the characters and their story.
As a reader, I find I read any genre that interests me, even if I don’t have much knowledge of it. When I began reading historical romance, I didn’t even know what ‘The Ton’ was. I don’t know a lot about the rules and etiquette from the various historical periods, but I enjoy reading the stories.
And my lack of knowledge probably makes it easier for me to enjoy a story when the author takes a few liberties and embellishes for the purposes of a story.
But I also find I immensely enjoy reading stories concerning things I know. On the negative side of that, if the author makes too many mistakes concerning that subject, it tends to dim my enjoyment of it. It just depends on how good a job they did of setting up a world with their own rules, where I can suspend disbelief.
As a writer I definitely either write what I know or what I”m interested in–who wants to research something they hate?!?!
As a reader, I also read across the board!
*waving* Hi, Larissa!
I love learning, so I often read about things I know nothing about. On the other hand, I have the hardest time reading about LatinAmerican characters because I often cringe at how they are portrayed. That’s one time my personal experience interferes with my enjoyment of many a book.
Once again, BEST of luck with Pleasure Unbound!
(oh and don’t put me in the drawing, please)
Hi LArissa, I like reading about things I know (like the military) but I also like to read stuff I don’t know well (like medicine) as I can learn from it and I love learning stuff.
I don’t have any personal experience in the paranormal world, but I love reading paranormal romance stories. A quality story is only limited to the writer’s imagination, and I love that. Throw in a hot romance, compelling characters, and a bit of humor, and I will gladly spend hours inside their world.
I love reading about everything. Paranormals is one of my fave genres. I loved watching scary shows when I was a kid, even now I love a good scary movie. It by Stephen King was one of my fave books and movie. I love the worlds the authors create in paranormals and sci/fi’s.
*Don’t enter me in the contest*
I just wanted to say hi Larissa. I love both HNDD and Pleasure Unbound. I like books that take me to other occupations such as the books you write.
Greta
{{{{Larissa!!}}}}} Hey!
I cannot wait to read Pleaure Unbound. I just lurrrves me some paranormals.
I am not into slasher movies or cut ‘em up books, but I adore vampire/shapeshifter/witch movies and books. And TV? I am heartbroken that Moonlight was cancelled. And loved Blood Ties. And watch Charmed whenever I can get away with it. Although I never watched a Buffy or an Angel episode….go figure?!
Can I say that I finally got to read Riding the Storm this weekend?
AWESOME!!
I totally and completely enjoyed it.
Now I get to read Unleashing the Storm. And Seduced by the Storm is on pre-order.
*rubbing hands together in gleeful anticipation!*
What was the question again? I got distracted by my little *squeeing fan-girl* episode! Sorry!
Sometimes, if I know too much about the subject matter of a novel I am reading, even if it is fiction I can get sidetracked by inaccuracies. Luckily, I don’t know too much about any one subject so…..no problem!
Hi Larissa,
My copy of “Pleasure Unbound” should be arriving this week and I can’t wait. I tend to read in areas I’m not an expert on. I love murder mysteries, paranormals, comic books and spy novels. I’ve been watching Law and Order and CSI for years and I wish that makes me an expert in crime investigation.
I like to read about things I know and things I don’t know about.
Hi Larissa, I love to read a wide variety of books. As long as the characters are interesting I’m game. It fun to learn about things I don’t know a lot about. That is a great cover!
Yes, I like to read things I know something about or have a hobby similar to the heroine. I also don’t mind reading something new that I don’t know about since that is how I learn.
I’m reading Pleasure Unbound. Enjoying it greatly.
Reading what I know? I’m an engineer so there aren’t too many books that take place with materials engineers. But I do love is reading books that take place in settings that I know. When we were in Australia I worked at finding books that were set in Australia. I read two books that took place at two of my favorite vacation spots – Maine and Cape Cod. I have a cozy mystery that takes place in a fictional town based on the town where my sister lives in Colorado. With settings I know, it gives me grounding for picturing action in the book.
I’ve heard so many great things about this release. I can’t wait to read it!
Generally, I enjoy reading books that transport me to vivid settings. If a book is set in a place I’m knowledgeable about, the author has to be meticulous about her research or I might be pulled from the story by questions like “how is that possible?”
*waving to everyone*
Hi all!!!! Wow, you guys have been busy! I’ve been in and out all day, so haven’t been able to catch up.
I forgot to mention that as a reader, I tend to like to read about things I know…but I’m picky. Like most of you, I can get so pulled out of a story when an author gets the details wrong. I can deal with minor mistakes, but blatant ones drive me nuts!
i like anything as long as it a great story. Looking forward to your pleasure unbound.
As a reader, I love reading paranormal plots. For me reading is esacpism. Nothing like an unusual plot that does not even minutely resemble my life to help me unwind and escape for a little while. My own mini vacation
I’m pretty much open to any types of book. I love reading what I know and reading things I don’t know. I think I’ve learned more about Regency England from reading my historical novels then I learned in school.
And I agree with Cherie..books are my mini vacation. With one book I could be in Scotland or Japan in a day!
Waving hi to Larissa don’t enter me in the contest I have both books!
I like to read differnet types of books. Even though historicals are my fave. I also love reading vamps, paranormal, time travel and etc.
yes i do most of the time but i like to explore new ideas also
I love reading a variety, it really keeps things fresh for me. I know that I learned so many legends, mythology, BDSM, historical, different paranormals, etc that I got the opportunity to learn from reading romance books! I remember the first time that I read a Greek god book and I wanted to find a bunch more to read because I just found it so fascinating to learn about them. Same with learning about Camelot and Atlantis, etc. I have much more to learn! So I love reading my favorites, but too, I love to read new themes and learn more!
I like reading about things I know and don’t know.
I enjoy reading many different genres, but Paranormal has always been my favorite. I love vamps and shifters.
