Yvonne Lindsay introduces TYCOON’S VALENTINE VENDETTA!

First of all, I just want to say a big thank you to Fatin for inviting me to blog about my Silhouette Desire February release, TYCOON’S VALENTINE VENDETTA, and secondly I want to send a big shout out to all my readers who have made my transition from unpublished to successfully published author such a great time! Without you guys I’d be lost.

TYCOON’S VALENTINE VENDETTA is my fifth Silhouette Desire and is set on a fictional peninsula on the New Zealand coast, just south of the city where I live, Auckland. While this particular peninsula is fictional, New Zealand is dotted with fingers of land reaching out into the sea, many of them lined with glorious white sand beaches, so it wasn’t too much of a stretch of the imagination for me to create this alternate world for my characters to reunite.

I’ve always loved reunion romances, and Jack and Lily’s story is no exception. In fact, I started writing this book many years ago where instead of Jack having stayed in Onemata and Lily having left to go overseas it was the other way around. Originally this book was called Liberating Lily, but when I revisited this old, but much loved, partially written manuscript I realised how much more impactful the story would be if Jack had been the one to stay behind. Then, of course, I had to think of the reason why he would stay in the one place on earth he hated to be and what would drive Lily back into his arms, and his bed.

I love creating the twists and turns that up the conflict in my romances and hope you will enjoy reading them just as much. Just a word of caution though, don’t get confused when you see the hero’s name on the back cover of TYCOON’S VALENTINE VENDETTA, and on the inside copy. Originally Jack Dolan was named Hunter Dolan but due to a hiccup during production this name change didn’t make it through in time for printing. Ah, the vagaries of publishing ;-)

Speaking of twists and turns in a story, what sort of things really attract you to a book? Which are your favourite storylines (e.g. stranded, reunion, beauty and the beast, cinderella, boss/secretary etc) and who, in your opinion, has done the best job of bringing a traditional concept to your keeper shelf? All your comments will go into a draw and three lucky winners will receive a book from my backlist. You can view my backlist on my website and start thinking about which book you’d like to receive if you’re one of the winners.

Hey Yvonne! What a great cover! The photographer did a fabulous job catching the right look for the models. Fabulous!

I love reunion stories too. I think it makes the book more emotional as the characters have so much history together. I am one of those readers who love pretty much all storylines. Congrats on your success!

Oooo, a Valentine vendetta . . . sounds intriguing!

Hi Yvonne! I also love reunion stories as well as the Conderella story in reverse (where the hero feels he isn’t good enough for the heroine) and also best friends becoming lovers stories. Of course, if it’s romance and written well, I’ll love it no matter what type of story it is. :)

Love the cover of your latest and I also love a good reunion story!

I enjoy reunion stories, marriage of convenience stories, friends to lovers. There are so many great authors who write these stories I couldn’t just pick one.

Hi, Yvonne!! This sounds great, and I will be picking it up. Hmmm…I think what I love best the instant “love” meets…and love it most when the man is feeling, and the female isn’t thrilled or accepting of it, and the hero has to convince her.
I just think there is something special about a hero who admits up front that he’s met his “one” and is willing to do whatever it takes to keep, protect and win her.

Hello! The book sounds wonderful!

I am a sucker for the friends-to-lovers stories…those are my all-time fave. It is great watching two people who know each other so well fall in love. It has been done many times so it would be hard for me to pick just one author I think.

Hi Yvonne,

Your book sounds great :)

I really like the ones where their is a masquerade of sorts and convenience engagements.

I remember reading once a Sudden Engagement by Penny Jordan where a mediocre actress goes to the room of a famous director and acts as if she had every right of being there… and the director ends up wanting her to play the role of his fiancée… it was very nice!

Hi,

I have an unhealthy fixation on ward/guardian romances… and I know that a lot of the older Harlequin authors have done a great job - like Anne Hampson for example and will always remember These Old Shades by Georgette Heyer.

Reunion stories are one of my favorite kind of stories! But I alsi love ‘love at first sight’ stories or eneies becoming lovers or…
Let’s be honest, a story has to be very bad for me not to love it. :P

Hi Buffie, yes, I love the cover treatment for this book. The art department captured Jack perfectly! Apparently the model they used is a guy called Brent…little wonder the hero in my next work in progress is now named Brent! :-D

Hey Andrea, I’ve never thought about doing a Cinderella in reverse story. Hmmm, now you’ve got my brain ticking over!

Teresa, so glad to hear you too are keen on the reunion romance. I think there’s a little bit of many of us that has a hankering for something from days gone by (for me it’s probably a dress size though! :-D )

Maureen, Brent is getting a marriage of convenience story. I love them too. My second title, THE CEO’S CONTRACT BRIDE was a MOC but they also had a past together which really ramped up the tension.

Melissa, ahhh, a true romantic. Yes, the “instant love meets” are great, especially when the conflict lies in what they don’t know about one another.

Hi Jennifer, the ‘friends to lovers’ theme keeps popping up again and again. In my latest contract I have one ‘blind’ book (i.e. no outline for it yet) and I’m toying with different scenarios. This could be one on the drawing board.

Nathalie, yes, that story outline sounds fantastic. And knowing Ms Jordan’s style of writing I bet the story was riven with tension and high emotion. I love reading books like that too.

Hey Lily. I wouldn’t call that fixation unhealthy, it’s your preference so how can that be wrong? I think in alot of cases, at least I know it was with me when I went through a stage of actively seeking such stories, it was all about being rescued by the knight in shining armour. Almost like the Sleeping Beauty ‘one day your prince will come’ theme. And to have that prince be someone you already know and love and trust, well, that’s just the icing on the cake.

Stefanie, you sound like you just love to read romance! I think it’s very difficult to effectively pull off a story where enemies become lovers, especialy when both feel that the other is ‘the enemy’, but when it’s well done it is a deeply satisfying read, for sure! :-)

Hi Yvonne. What a great cover. I like reunion stories, best friends to lovers, boss/secretary romance, in love with brother’s best friend, secret babies. I am a big fan of category romance and if it sounds good when I pick up the book, I want to read it. :)

Hi, Yvonne! That is a terrific cover! I’m with JenniferY–I love the friends discovering something more theme. I also like reunion or reconciliations, and the plain-Jane gets her man (especially if it’s because he recognizes how fabulous her character and talents are, not because she’s magically made beautiful–hate that!).

Congrats on your successes, and best wishes for your upcoming work!

Hi Yvonne,
I have to admit, I’m a sucker for pretty much all those stories - its why I read so many romances! I agree with fedora - I love the plain Jane books. And the friends to lovers - and the beauty/beast and boss/secretary books. I really love the characters- but I think it has something to do with the character’s situation. Generally the heroine, who has to pull herself up by the bootstraps - and really take a position and run with it - to make something of herself, and to be her own person. And if she happens to find love along the way ;-) well in novels, thats as it should be. I think what attracts me is the woman developing, and finding her own worth, receiving affirmation for being the person she is… and then getting “rewarded” with her one true perfect love. (And the plain Jane/friend/secretary role just really lends itself to that!)

I love reunion stories! Am looking forward to reading Tycoons Valentine Vendetta.

I am a big fairy tale fan so I love Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast type plots. Reunion stories are cool too and I think your book sounds really good.

Crystal, thanks for your comments on the cover :-). Everytime I look at it it gives me tingles (well, Brent/Jack does anyway!) :-D I haven’t done a best friends to lovers story yet. I reckon that would be a powerful challenge to make it work under the current Desire guidelines but hey, I’m always up for a challenge.

Fedora, another friends to lovers fan! I’m seeing a theme here… thanks for your congrats.

JSL, yep, I think you and Fedora must have similar tastes. The Plain Jane (would that be a Galatea-story?) was always one of my favourites when I had more time to read than to write. But I think you’ve hit the nail on the head with your comment about the heroine finding strength and growing as a person. I think that’s one of the most important themes in any romance.

Estella, so glad to hear you like reunion stories. Be sure and let me know what you think of Tycoon’s Valentine Vendetta!

Cherie, I often try to look to fairytales for my inspiration. If Beauty and the Beast stories are among your favourites then I think you’ll enjoy my upcoming August Desire release which I’ve loosely summarised as a Beauty and the Beast Runaway Amnesiac Bride story. It’s called Claiming His Runaway Bride.

Hi Yvonne,
I love all kind of romance but as another fairy tale fan my favorites are Beauty and the Beast and Cinderella. This book sounds great, but even more I’m waiting for the next one you mentioned…

Hi Eva, LOL, great to know you’re looking forward to my August release too. I’m keen to know what kind of cover treatment the art department will be giving that story. In the interim, though, I have a continuity book coming out in June–the final book in the Diamonds Down Under continuity which started last month. Can’t say I can pin that one down to a particular fairy tale, though. Might have to think on that one for a while…

Hi All, I’ve done the draw and the winners are:
